At The ZOO Photographing With 3 NEW TAMRON Lenses (18-400, 100-400, 24-70 G2)
I took three tamron lenses out to the zoo to get sample images for reviews I am doing of each of these lenses. You should be able to tell which lenses shot which photos based on the lens hood and size of the lens.
When I do the final reviews I will make the RAW files available for you to download and play with.

I would pick the 18-400 because it is the most versatile for video for the huge zoom range but I would not use it much with a nikon because of nikons bad AF for video unless for a rare instance if traveling abroad and I need to limit my lenses. It would be more useful on a canon dslr for video. I mainly shoot primes for the better light and sharpness

It would have to be the 24-70. i have been using a variable aperture lens an 18-200mm actually which you actually reviewed some of my photo's. (with all positive feedback) Thank you for that btw. i just need better glass. unfortunately it isn't in my budget yet.

I'd go with the 24-70 because the AF motor on my old one is a little iffy sometimes and I use the 24-70 more than anything else.

Hate to be the squeaky wheel here, but I've asked the same question three times now. Where can I get those slick workout I SHOOT RAW shirts. The only ones you have are your originals and a couple of other styles but no tight fitting workout versions. Are they available and if so, where may I purchase one. Ps- you did respond the first time I asked this, but you failed to mention if they where available and where I could get them. You just confirmed what it was - "a workout shirt" ...Thanks.

Dude, you were using three lenses and you didn't say which one you were using for each shot! That was super annoying as I wasn't sure if you were shooting 400 on the long side of 18-400 or 100-400! Should have labeled those shots!

I loved this video! When I saw the gorillas behind glass, I wasn't expecting much but wow! Those were awesome. And the peacock! And the other birds... basically, I just loved your photos in this video. The closest zoo to me is the Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI (about an hour's drive from where I live). Admission is free and now I want to go to the zoo! (gotta wait for a break in this gross and cold weather though). I have the Tamron 16-300 and I love it. I use that most of the time at the renaissance faire because our faire is extremely dusty and I hate changing lenses (and now I don't have to). If I had to choose one of the lenses you showed off today, I'd go with the 18-400 just because I can imagine the jousting and birds of prey photos I could get with it. Last summer was my first summer using the 16-300 at the faire and our falconer couldn't come to Wisconsin because the husband was having health issues (good news, he's fine and they'll be back this summer!). So I can't wait to take photos of them in action this summer.

Wow! That was a cool video Jared. Filming the shot then showing the still photo of the long shot was extremely helpful to know what a photo looks like when it’s processed. Amazing work once again and thanks for the information on the Tamron lenses. I’m saving up for the 18-400 lens and hope to get it before the summer’s ended.

I purchased The Tamron 18-400 from Amazon the day they got them in. On my 4year old T3i, It was bad. Would not focus good, and not saying I'm a great photographer but I learned from the best,, You! So I tried everything. Tripod, Bright conditions , Fast shutter, hi, low, and in-between F#s with no real success. I almost gave up on it. Then I had a thought! I had wanted the 80D since it was released but my T3i after over 60k pictures still works great with all my other lenses. Wife and I talked about it and before sending the lens back I bought the 80D and gave it a try with the new lens. The lack of reviews on the lens from being just released , I figured what the heck, I want the 80D no matter what happens. Seemed worth a try. I knew it would be a dark lens and need a lot of light but I had an event to shoot the following week at Bonneville Salt flats where it is very bright and shouldn't be an issue. So, I went for it, hoping I could get the lens to work out for the fast and drastic change in focal length needed to shoot our race truck at this event. It holds the world record for it's class @ 228mph over 5 miles. A highway hauler Frieghtliner. Well it worked!! Lens focused great with the 80D. Shot the event with it and a P3P drone, The Sponsors loved the shots. No, it's not a lens to replace hi quality glass but I am getting much better quality with it then I ever got with kit lenses.

I've bought the 24-70 2.8 G2 for Xmas and it's totally and utterly AMAZING. Sometimes it has a bit of back focus (is it when the focus is behind the subject?), but when the focus is perfect is just wesome. I think I'll fine-tune it and when it'll be 100% accurate it'll be one of the best lens I've ever had. By the way, great job with your videos as usual! Keep up with the excellent job Fro!

I'd be interested in seeing a real world review of the 18-400. One thing I'm interested in is how close you can get at 18mm and still focus, and see how much distortion is present. You are right that this lens could be the only lens you'd have to carry because of the range of this lens. BTW, I loved the close-up shot of the gorilla!
@sometimesinfocus
@sometimesinfocus 6 лет назад
I can tell you this much - you can focus as close as 45cm (17.7 in) from the subject to the focal plane mark on the camera. Subtract the length of the lens + however much you need to get to the focal plane mark and you'll get the distance from the subject to the outer glass of the lens (can tell you from experience that it can get pretty damn close/very in your face at 400mm).

Jared, I'm rocking the Mindshift Photocross 13 which is a sling bag. I absolutely love this thing. You can carry all 3 of those lenses and with the spare little zipper pouches for spare mem cards and batteries, all while never having to set the bag on the ground to change lenses. While it doesn't hold everything... it's an awesome day pack bag without being like a drone bag on your back.

Personally, I LOVE the 24-70 G2. Now, admittedly, it's one of my first fast lenses. But it's pretty wonderful... I mean.. if you're not in a zoo. I'm actually putting together a video on it as well. I think I'm most impressed with the VC. I took a 1/13 sec handheld photo and it came out pretty darn sharp. I just love everything about this lens. I also took the 18-400 for a walk at the zoo. I guess it's a natural zoo lens. I thought it was really nice having such a huge range on one lens. And, considering the range, it was nice and relatively sharp. But.. if you go in pixel peeping, it does seem to be a little softer than my kit lenses. Given what it does, that's not a slam on Tamron. I'm absolutely going to end up buying one.. after I get the next thing, which is either the 70-200 G2 or that extender for my 150-600. I have become almost exclusively a Tamron guy. Here's my question to the professional... my overall take on the 18-400 is that it's a great all in one that you could absolutely throw in your bag to go on vacation.. if you weren't the kinda guy who sees every vacation as a photo shoot and packs his entire kit. But... would you consider the 18-400 sharp enough for pro work? It's not a leading question. I seriously don't know and am interested in what you think. Thanks, Chris

It is relatively unknown that very big apertures make the fences and the dust on the lens to disappear. That optical phenomenon is more apparent with lenses longer that 200mm and with apertures bigger than f/2.8 or with lenses above 50mm and apertures bigger than f/1.4. With wide lenses shorter than 35mm this phenomenon is less obvious.

I was at the Cincinnati Zoo today with the Nikon 7200 and a Tamron 18-270. First chance I had to try them out together. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with the results. The images were sharp in the center but a bit fuzzy at the edges. They were also darker than I thought they would be and lacked the color. Still think it has a lot to do with me than the camera or lens. I have been contemplating the Tamron 28-75 as a cheap alternative to the 24-70 but would love to hear your thoughts on that lens. We also bought a season pass :) but would love to tag along with you at the Philly Zoo.

My problems taking photos at the zoo is the glare I get from the glass and when it's dark inside and you can't use a flash for different reasons. I know I can up the ISO, I just don't want them to be grainy. I wouldn't min having a 18-400 lens but I have heard that since the camera has to go through all of that glass, the quality of the photos are not as great if you were to just have lets say a 100-400 etc. I would use the 18-400 on certain occasions like when I go on vacation or I just don't know what lens I should take. I would still want to have my different lenses when I do "normal" photo outings.

Are these all available in Canon EF mount? Stupid question, but inquiring minds want to know.

Well, if I ever make it back to Philly that's 2 places to see next time... Pamcakes and the zoo. I'll take the 24-70 as I already have the 16-300 and I use wide angle more than tele. Who's going to buy it for me?

Jared. If you were going to pick only one of those 3 lens to carry around for the day at the zoo Which would it be ??

Jared thanks for the reply. Maybe my scenario and your input would not only help me but your other subscribers also. I have a Canon T7I and i bought the “better” kit lens 18-135 and a 50 mm 1.8. I was looking to invest in a lens to get a longer focal length then the 18-135mm, After watching your video i am seriously considering the Tamron 18-400. Altho it will cover the 18-135 range i already have it seems like it would be a fun lens to have and carry around. If you have any other suggestions that you think would be better let me and your other subscribers know. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
