In the mid 90s I volunteered at an appropriate technology center in Guatemala. The outhouse was set up so that urine passed through a hose to a jug outside and we sprinkled wood ash on our poo. After 6 months the seat was moved to an empty side and the full side was capped and composted for 6 months. After 6 months the compost was removed, shaken through mesh wire and deposited in the garden or bagged for later use. It had an earthy smell and didn’t seem gross to hold in our hands like soil. Thx for bringing up the topic. Great video!
The other way I’ve seen it done really well was they use a Methane bio digester or biogas bag, and it can be hooked up to a toilet. So that it gets sucked into it and flushed. Was really efficient. I wonder too if throwing biochar into the composting toilet fixes issues like smell.
And I guess as far as wheather it’s safe or not, a lot of regenerative agriculture preaches constantly looking at soil and compost under microscope. Even a regular person can learn these skills. To a degree to be more certain you could just physically look at samples of the waste😊
Great tip on stumps! I’ll have a lot of them at my new place. When I was in the city, I only had access to leaves for carbon and I would poke holes in the bag of chopped leaves and pour the “nitrogen solution” in and shake it up, which worked great to “precompost “ the leaves before adding them to my big compost pile.for the ladies out there...this is easily done with a big gulp cup from 7-11!😉learned how to do this in the Army during Desert Storm with a poncho on because we had no latrines when I was out on advance party or doing an engineer support mission. Yes, it’s weird to some people, but it’s an amazing amount of free nitrogen. Also worked great to break down straw bales for a straw bale garden experiment that I did. Adding large amounts of this to garden soil long term can add too much salt, but compost microbes and insects can mitigate sodium amounts. It’s for sure cheaper than buying nitrogen!
THANK YOU! I was just discussing w/ my significant other what in the world to do about a big stump near our driveway. Now we know! I had also heard if you mix it 1/10-20 it makes good plant fertilizer. It makes no sense to me to go out and BUY something our body makes every single day. We don't have a fertilizer shortage, we have a common sense shortage.
Exactly! And the reason they keep reporting a shortage is because a shortage of "urea". But they never mention the fact that urea is Urine!!!! We remove ourselves so much from nature and then claim we have shortages..
@@travisdavis1042 It is too strong if not diluted is what I have read. The amount of dilution is sorta all over the place with anywhere from 5:1 - 10:1 water to urine.
well yeah in nature you dont urine in one place, you go around and urinate at different places. A rain hose and the urine is diluted. @@carissacantwell9355
😂 You said “we’re not holding anything back”! I laughed all the way through this funny and informative video. We’ve actually used urine for critter deterrent and it seems to be working. Can’t wait to tell my husband to go look for a tree stump!
We have neighbors a bit too close for my husband to water trees so he used a jug like yours. It was my job to go splash it on the stone walls and trees. We also used it on the compost piles. It’s great stuff ! Thanks for mentioning this important resource to those that are unaware of its value.
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 💗🤝💗 Thank you for the data and laughter. I actually learned about "MARKING THE TERRITORY" from a blue blood when I was babysitting a wolf dog. Many years later, poor thing would immediately urinate when my son (at the time) would visit it's human family. Great info on tree stumps.
Everyone laughed at me several years ago when I told them about this. I have used urine to keep deer out of my garden and it works. I was told it only worked if you use urine from a man but that's not true. As a single woman I didn't have an option but obviously the deer can't tell the difference because they stayed away. Glad you did the video because I have a stump in my hen house I need to get rid of. I don't use chemicals so that stump is a thorn to me but now I know how to get rid of it. Thanks Billy.
females produce testosterone too tho less, but i don't know what animals smell tho, pheromones or hormones but i think deer don't care about the gender of a predator tho
Now sure about the sexes for urine effect on animals. But I do know that for women to use urine in the garden they need one of those plastic things that make it possible to pea standing up from what I’ve read and made sense of because this way you get away from the possible contamination from the anus when it drips down due to female anatomy.
Today's episode is brought to you by the letter 'p'. I started watching you after Jason visited you on his channel. You seemed like the happiest guy on the planet. Your videos are always informative and you have a fantastic sense of humor. Thanks for sharing your knowledge/passion.
Bless you for reminding us that we’re all part of a process. Surely we don’t have to apologise for natural functions, and the male of most species marks it’s territory. That’s what you’re demonstrating and teaching us also how we can work with Nature to help break down woody structures using our own naturally created nitrogen. Again, just part of the process. You’re a treasure, THANK YOU 🤗 grandma from Oz
Not weird! I use urine in my regular neighborhood home…the neighbors have no idea! I didn’t know about the stump decomposition, though! Cool, cause I have a stump in mind!
good on you mate. i live on self sufficient property in nz, solar power, rain water etc. if you splash your urine on a compost pile that will help a lot but if you mix comfrey leaves - chopped and mixed with urine and water 1: 1 and after few days you will get best fertilizer for your strawberries and other veggies. of course if you are healthy. some people even drink they own urine with no problems .
Yes, you are 💯. I discovered it works well around 🪴 squash and zucchini plants. I tried It from watching a RU-vid channel, it really works. At first I thought that is soooo discussing. Then I thought about it. It's my urine and it's my garden. So what the hell. Why not try it.
I kid you not, this man isn't lying. I had chickens for some time, and I would occasionally have something pick one off in the dead of the night. I was at work one day when an old farmer had picture of chickens. We struck up conversation about them, and the topic of their disappearances came up. He literally told me to pee in a 5gal Lowe's bucket until it was full, then sprinkle it on the perimeter of my property. I swear, that stuff lasted for weeks after only a single application. Still, do it weekly, but it does work. It keeps all the critter-getters at bay.
I didn't want to subscribe to another channel, but i finished the video and said dammit, i like this guy. Anymore channels and im going to need help watching the vids. Thanks for the info man, i knew of a few but did not know of the stump breakdown, which i definitely need. Much appreciated.
Hey Man, great to hear you talking about Urine. My wife and I collect our URINE daily by having a small bucket fit into our FLUSH Toilet Bowl and this is empted into 5 litre plastic bottles and poured over our Veggie Raised garden Beds after sprinkling them with WOOD-ASH from out heating stove. This system balances the PH to a slightly acid reading 6.7 which suits most Veggie Plants. So keep this good ideas flowing
Thanks for the tips. Urine's far less disgusting than whatever it is the sell in plastic bottles to do the same things. Plus, earth toilets smell less than regular toilets, and I do like them, although I've only used them at festivals so far, so maybe for lengthy periods I might miss regular bathrooms, I dunno!
i have been using it to speed up compost heaps for decades. it works very well. i compost arborist wood chips with it and it speeds the process 3 fold.
I use urine to fertilize my vegetable garden. One part urine to nine parts water. I live in close proximity to neighbors so fish emulsion is not possible. I had been using Miracle Grow up until then.
Great ideas! I pour gallons of urine on the compost pile when it cools down and it heats right up. I also use diluted urine anywhere I might use Miracle Gro, like to green up yellowing plants. It does wonders for my corn crop.
I am on my 3rd year of testing Urine as fertilizer (I have them on my channel in playlists) .... I have several plants in each of the following catagories: control, commercial fertilizer (miracle grow), Urine and Urine with Woodash. I use directly at the base of the plants, diluted 10 parts water to 1 part water, every two weeks... I'm constantly in ah of people that are gross at using our own waste but a pig/horse/goat is ok.... fun topic and it works! with a shortage of nitrogen in farming this year i'm using urine more than ever.
Try fish aquarium water too. Here in CA we are going through a drought and I urge fishkeepers not to waste a drop of water. Plants love the nitrites and nitrates.
I have a six feet high privacy fence around my sides and backyard here in central Florida , so recently I discovered that if I pee on the sand spur weeds they die pretty fast.
I'm sure some ppl are cringing watching this video lol but it's very informative and these are things ppl have been doing for years. But yes def your keeping it real. I never heard about using it on stumps. So I learned something new today!
It's my understanding that it needs to be kept in a container for at least five days for the conversion from ammonia to nitrogen to be in full effect. Urine is an awesome resource. Thanks for putting this out there and making it part of the conversation.
I use my own urine on my trees... I just pee straight on the ground and then just water a little bit to dilute it. Works great. My fruit trees are always full of blossoms.
Great video! thank you! Very informative and love the humour that you bring into it! I would also like to learn about mixing our grey water with our urine as a part of the dilution process.
I live in a small lot subdivision, yet close to open areas so I get deer in my yard especially when their food is scarce. So I have used urine for a perimeter repellant from time to time. One day I came home to find my neighbor taking pictures of my front yard. Up close she pointed out 3 deer at once munching away on my flora. I mix fruit trees, veggies, herbs, edible flowers right into my gardens along with regular flowers and shrubs. (My kids call it my grass eradication project.) It works. I do not put it directly on anything edible. A few month ago I had a bear siting in my driveway feasting on one of my overloaded apple trees. This is a good reminder to be proactive for that in future years. Also may be good idea if I have to have a garbage can with meat scraps out to the curb overnight.
"That's when I really started experimenting with it" LOL Mannnnn I had a good laugh at this - thank you for all of the great information boss - you definitely have me reconsidering our waste cycles on the farm.
I have a residential lot in a small town. Since the house is currently unoccupied (yard kept mowed, though). There is a small herd of deer that frequent the yard, and I was searching for info on urine and a deterrent for when I eventually move in. That is how I stumbled on your channel and this useful information.
I'm a hunter and we urinate under our mock scrapes to bring the deer in. Under 12hrs the deer will think it's another deer. Go to a barber shop and get hair or use dryer sheets. That's how we keep them from destroying our apple trees
I gotta pee but first, adding to your statement about high up in trees, in bear country the higher the pee in the tree the larger you appear to the bears. Watch them run. Another great video Billy. Thx
This topic is absolutely fine as it's a natural act, it saves on water 💧 being flushed down the sewer while having a use for the compost 🤷♀️ I visited a garden centre in Kent, UK 🇬🇧 and they had a shallow hay bale where people could wee 😏 and I must say that they had a spectacular garden of vegetables, fruits and herbs 🤗 I may just try this out 🤔🤗
In central California I had a problem with cougars, bobcats, and coyotes. When male guests needed to pee, I requested that they select a perimeter tree, and apply it as HIGH as possible. The cats shredded my Posted signs....in retaliation??? BTW, the male Jack Russel terrier stands on its front paws, to pee higher up on the tree...implying a much taller dog. Zoos also sell Lion Urine, which I am told works VERY well as a deterrent. -M
Great video. It’s difficult (time consuming) to manage a farm, composting animal and additional human manure with few people helping. I think it’s ideal for large families.
Its difficult because nobody (except head of household)*/tends to deal with it...or better said none wants to handle the chore! (it isn't up on the top of the list of chores for me)😂
Turning a liability into an asset is the name of the game. Why throw away valuable nutrients just because someone else thinks it's icky. Great tips! Definitely do proper research before using human waist, but as chemical fertilizer becomes more expensive and proved to be less effective long term, it's great to be thinking about how to maximize the resources you have. Thank you!
