3 Phase Motor Startup No Soft Start

Quick comparison between a 2 phase motor VS 3 phase motor, across the line startups. First motor is a 15HP 2 phase motor powering the main supply fresh air fan for a 90+ year old school.
Second one is a 35hp 3 phase motor powering a large fan. The wheel (fan) is roughly 6ft in diameter, weighs over 450 lbs and rotates about 950rpm. First startup after replacing the belt on it and has a great motor whine
Many of you asked for more videos of startups, so here is a compilation of various motor startups!
Note: currently unlisted as I may add more clips, consider this a sneak peak!
• Compilation 2 phase/3 ...
here is a VFD test on a large fan for a cooling tower (also unlisted for the moment)
• VFD Fan Test For Cooli...
NOTE: do NOT reupload this or ANY of my videos on YT, Meta platforms, or TikTok for your views without permission and giving credit to the original owner. Any violators WILL BE REPORTED.

When I was in elementary school, I used to play with the air handler for the heat system in the gym. When it was off, I moved the on/off lever to the on position, and it made a really cool startup sound. When it was on, and I turned it off, it took forever for the fan to stop. I got yelled at by the gym teacher, though, so for any elementary school who is thinking about doing it now, I do not suggest doing it unless you want a talking to from your principal.

from back in the day when motors were rated for hard-line starting... Nowadays they tend to be "inverter duty" and "vector duty", which basically means they've skimped on the temporary overload capacity and then put some word-spin on it to make that sound like a good thing :P
@charlesvandergrift3126
@charlesvandergrift3126 4 месяца назад
That’s not completely true. Inverter duty means just that, that it is designed to be used with an inverter and run at variable speeds. Vector duty means that the motor can make full torque at zero speed. For example, many crane hoist motors are vector duty for precise control and load holding capability in the event of a hoist brake failure. If anything was cheaped out on, it’s the standard duty motors. And really, why have a more expensive motor when a cheaper motor plus a soft start will do what you need?

The 3 phase system allows for a faster, smoother start up under load than single phase. It's tough to explain, but in simpke terms imagine a sequenced electromagnetic push at each 120° around the entite circle.
@NickSilcox3
@NickSilcox3 10 месяцев назад
Single phase motors, without an extra device to tell it which way to turn, it will just humm, Many single phase induction motors has a capacitor, shunt, or shaded pole that shifts the winding 90 degrees off which will direct the rotor in which direction it will turn. Larger motors has windings with capacitors that is de energized with a centrifugal switch once the motor is up 70-80% speed. 3 phase like you said is very easy to start since the signwaves is 120 apart. And changing rotation is simple interchanging any 2 wires.

In my opinion, a "hard start" is where there is no time to a very few seconds from stand still to full RPM; So if this was a true hard start there would have been some serious screeching and maybe some smoke coming from the drive belts (if the belts were not under proper tension)
@NickSilcox3
@NickSilcox3 3 года назад
BATTLESHIP NEW JERSEY SAILOR that is what across the line is, hard start. The motor sees 240 or 480V instantly from a stand still. Motors pull insane amount of current to get it rotating at full rpms. Much more than Full Load Amps. The second fan motor smokes the belt if it’s warn.

@@NickSilcox3 I stand corrected, but then I'm not an electrician, just an engineer
@salle6307
@salle6307 3 года назад
If you are electrical engineer, you should know everything what electrician knows. I didnt see thr power on first one and second one is 22kW. Smaller motors, smaller mass and faster acceleration with lower current. Lets say vacuum cleaner motor is 2kW. It can start right away because starting current is, lets say 20Amps that drops while motor is accelerating to nominal rpm (less then 0.5 seconds). Bigger motors need more time to reach nominal rpm because of the mass of their rotor and their starting current last longer. This 22kW motor needs few secs to reach nominal rpm and it draws almost 70Amps when starting but his rotor mass wont allow it to accelerate from "0-100" right away.
@NickSilcox3
@NickSilcox3 3 года назад
Salle not all the time, larger motors doesn’t need more time, if the current is available, motors will pull all the power needed to reach its full rpm (locked rotor current). It’s the load, load size and weight that determines the startup. However Large motors would typically have soft start kits, like part winding, reduced voltage, or VFD. The second motor spins a large impeller that weighs 400lbs at 800rpm

2 phase?
@NickSilcox3
@NickSilcox3 5 лет назад
Alex Phillips old cities (at least in Philadelphia PA) that has not updated the grid, still has 2 phase power. Same phase angle to 3 phase but there is no 3rd leg (120, and then it’s 240 degrees apart)
@TankCrusher210
@TankCrusher210 4 года назад
2 phase power is derived from 3 phase via a pair of transformers arranged in a Scott 'T' connection - or else supplied by ancient generating stations with 2 phase alternators. 90 degree phase angle. Typically seen with 4 ungrounded conductors about a 5th neutral (2 phase 5-wire), 4 ungrounded conductors (2 phase 4-wire) or 2 ungrounded conductors about a 3rd neutral (2 phase 3-wire). 5-wire gives 0*, 90*, 180* and 270* phases, while 4-wire and 3-wire only give 0* and 90*. The advent of vector math in 1918 made calculations feasible for unbalanced 3-phase systems, enabling their practical use. 3 phase is simpler, cheaper and more stable than 2 phase so the latter was instantly rendered obsolete.
