Get a fire blanket, don't use aluminum foil. You can burn right through foil if the flame touches it (notice how he put the flame to the wood in the first clip but didn't touch it to the foil in the second?) Also, don't erase the writing on the valve handle, it sometimes contains the valve ratings or certifications. Just hang a tag on the handle to label it.

Actually knew the first tip but we don’t use a C clamp. We have a guy at work we call clamp or Larry(don’t ask where Larry came from when he does something we’re proud of we say in a country accent oh that’s a bad Larry) but anyways I shit you not this guy uses a pry bar and some ancient leverage technique to get new work boxes in renovations we’re doing in between studs. @@Irvingstine just checked my water shutoff valve that is the lever type, the pvc/plastic handle cover is probably too brittle to pull off now, but maybe on a new valve…. There is an eyelet for a tag anyways
@Irvingstine
@Irvingstine Год назад
@@correcthoarsebatterystaple I just know in Canada they give you a really hard time on any type of ball valve that's outdoors especially. If it is missing the tag on it. It has to be changed out. It has to be a approved outdoor valve. Basically the handles won't rust. They might also with plumbing when you're certifying the job.

The c-clamp tip might work for me. The elbow fitting for the shower head pipe is loose behind the tile, and the screws are not accessible: maybe I can cut a little access hole on the other side of the wall and secure the pipe using the method you described. I used an old cookie sheet as a heat shield l, but aluminum foil makes more sense, doh!

The easiest way to label a value if it's clean copper, you can write on the pipe with the same marker. Skip the primer. You can sometimes slide the rubber off the handle and put it back upside down. Also easier than using the primer. Another way easier than primer is masking tape. I also have multiple colors of electrical tape for labeling electrical connections in a junction box but masking tape is good to have and it's not expensive. Get a 1 inch or 1.5 inch roll of blue and one that's plain light brown. The regular masking tape is permanent after a week or so. Blue tape is removable for a few weeks or a few months so it's better for temporary labels.

I did something similar with the copper pipe soldering, but used a sheet of .030 aluminum sheet stock. 😅 I was a 17 year old kid who was interested in doing some handy work around the house. Drilled a hole in a copper water line hanging cabinets (thankfully) in the garage, made the repair, and finished hanging the cabinets. EDIT: If you have water constantly dribbling into the area you’re trying to solder that messing up your flux. Mash some bread into the pipe ends you’re connecting. It’ll absorb the water long enough to make the connection and soften up enough to pass through an outside faucet.
@76biggdogg
@76biggdogg Год назад
Bread trick works . Now days we just use a sharkbite fitting or pex and a clamp. Soldering is going to become extinct soon in my opinion. No fire risk at all using the newer options.
@Backyardmech1
@Backyardmech1 Год назад
@@76biggdogg I hear you. Copper is getting too expensive now to plumb homes with. After 20 years or so I’ve seen PVC, to CPVC, to pex. It’s getting cheaper and easier, but IMO dealing with the old stuff should still be a must to learn with future generations. Methods change with time, but homes don’t.
