Have STEEL Textured siding on the house since 1996. It is still beautiful. The contractor talked us into buying it and he did a great install job. I never really knew how great a job he did until the years passed!! This week a landscape contractor damaged the low edge of one piece, rear of house, a large ding in plain sight, knee high. I have a spare box of the stuff in the attic. It has been sitting up there untouched since 1996. I hope I can find a repair contractor who knows one has to pull off the damaged piece and the lower edge of the one above to properly fit one new piece. The original contractor is long out of business due to death and I am unskilled to perform such a task (Despite having that siding tool myself)! Steel has no give like the other types. PS, That wood grain textured surface gives steel great protection against hail stones.

You mentioned Kevlar coating on steel siding that reflects heat. I believe you mean Kynar, which is a trade name for PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) resin. PVDF coatings currently offer the highest protection against fading & chalking (and are also the most expensive), while SMP ( silicone modified polyester) coatings are a mid-level finish. At the bottom of the quality spectrum are regular polyester coatings, which are no longer recommended.

So nice of you thank you, this one was a tough one being only the northern states really sale Steel this was a education for me as well... I've done better but sometimes its a struggle and this was one of them.

Thanks for all the great videos! Any update on the measuring a house for siding video? I did use hover which gave me pretty darn accurate measurements. Matched my field measurements basicly. Going to be getting quotes for EDCO from arrow building center although I do like menards product and colors. Planning to brake all my trims, integrated j's. Trying to figure out exterior rigid insulation. House is 140yo with a 70's addition. Has 8in steel on it already. Had a tree hit the house and insurance is giving me RCV for the steel siding, roof, fascia and gutters. Plaster walls inside with unknown layers of paint. No clue on the insulation in the walls of the original structure. Been pouring over every building science old house reno details i can find.

Thank you very much greatly appreciated, the measuring of siding is in the works I will do my best to have it completed within 2 weeks. At this time work has me running 14 hours a day 7 days a week mandatory through October I can't wait to get back to doing videos I enjoy that a lot

I’m doing post frame construction (like a Barndominium). Would steel be lower cost than OSB & vinyl siding? I figure both need the Tyvex.

Great, informative video! However, I can’t find any prices on ABC Supply website. All it does it let me choose a manufacturer to get info on the products they produce. When you cut the steel siding, how do you keep the cut end (raw steel) from rusting? I'm not sure why folks are so down in vinyl siding. I'm in northern Ohio. We have some very harsh winters and hot summers. If the house isn't brick, there is a 90% chance it has vinyl siding. Even $600K houses are built with brick or stone on the front and vinyl on the sides and back. Properly installed, vinyl will last at least 40 years.

Sounds like Ohio has fallen behind times lol j/k but its a personal choice I will tell you when it comes to buy a home I will take one with Steel siding over vinyl any day.... Steel Siding will raise the value of your home over vinyl. As for cutting steel, you can cut it with a steel blade, snips or even steel siding guillotine.

@@letsdiymyhome I get that there are several tools to cut steel siding. BUT, what do you do about the uncoated steel edge? Logic says that sooner or later that edge will rust and then you will have rust stains running down your wall/

We do nothing to the cut edge and In some cases, the galvanized steel does not hold up as well to the elements. Why? Galvanized steel may not last as long in humid environments, extremely water-soaked environments, places with acid rainwater, or even where saltwater is prevalent. Local environmental conditions affect the durability and quality of the metal over time. Despite all of these circumstances, surprisingly enough, galvanized steel last for decades and decades with no maintenance. Most homeowners install a metal roof and don’t have to worry about replacing it again in their lifetimes even along the salt water. Galvanized steel has been in use for centuries. Metal roofing & Siding works for a variety of applications. Finally I guess you can seal the edging if you wish to, I would agree that would extend the life of the product. We dont do that here in MN and I never gave it any thought being the manufactures do warranty it as long as you use the cutting tools they claim to be acceptable. I hope that helps you my friend.

Quality Edge makes a great product.... I would install a heat deflector under it... just my 2 cents

@@letsdiymyhome Have you ever used LUX Metal Cladding? Out of Canada. Looks amazing...24 g, Galvalume steel with Kynar 500. Now I'm torn between LUX and Quality Edge.

Hello and good day. I'm in Canada where we get hail every year. I'm making a carport and for the sidings, bottom half wood siding and top half I'm thinking of using Ondura, is that a good idea ?

I paid cash for a fixer upper one month before Covid turned the world upside down, kept me home with my son in online classes, and drained a lot of my savings. It's an interesting house, with a lot of interesting problems. I'm learning as I go. The house has cedar board and batten siding on the second and third stories (it's a stilts house and the bottom story is a large garage and a laundry / storage room and has cheaper siding). The cedar was not maintained, and there is wood rot / old termite / woodpecker and squirrel damage. I'm keeping the board and batten design, and trying decide between the steel siding (wood look) and a Hardie panel type siding. My question is : I've been advised by two contractors to keep the cedar and just put the new siding on top of it. Any thoughts on that? I don't know who to trust.

Darla, First off congratulations, very few people today can buy a home for cash!!! You rock it girl!! Now to answer your question... Tear off VS Lay Over one thing to consider is wood (cedar) has a R-Value Steel & Vinyl do not and you need R-Value. My first question would be how old is the home and were is it located. See I would rather help you spend more money up front and then you get it back in time, what I mean by that is "me" I would tear off the cedar siding (layover will not fix any issues you may have "coverup=cheap") and then air tight that house as much as possible followed by installing at lest 1/2 of ridged foam board and tape up all the seams in that as well.. WIN WIN for you in comfort and energy savings. then find a new contractor. I say do it wright the first time or pay for it twice in energy loss.. Housing prices in Austin more than doubled, while the quality of life for myself and my younger kids was plummetting, so I quit my job, sold my house, and moved to the Texas Hill Country. I have half an acre of trees and lake views, and an amazing community. 😍 The house was built in 1986, and I believe the storage room was enclosed later. There is not Tyvek etc in the attic or the storage room, for - straight up cedar boards with holes in the attic, and just water damaged siding panels in the storage room. We enjoy being in nature, but birds living in one wall, and squirrels in another is a little too much, lol.

I would do it pending the neighborhood... If everyone is using brick or stucco you me Devalue your home if that is not the situation then yes do it but due to the heat you guys get there you should use something like the P2000 house wrap that will help reflect the heat from the home and I would in fact use it under the roofing as well... fortdistributors.com/products-services/p200-insulation-products/

What is the problem with rusted steel siding? If I like the rusted siding aesthetic, is there another downside? Or is rust bad only because of the look?

Well today its treated differently, and that could be a issue more so from a installation practice (using skill saw) ... if you burn the edges cutting it from a skill saw then the manufacture will void the warranty on the product. is a guillotine or snips then thats not a issue. and if it rusts in 20yrs the manufactures will take care of it....

It will be over cedar. This one is a custom from 1938. The cedar is thick. To nice to call it trash. Only way is over lay. Steel won't burn, that is my issue. It's safety. Can it be safely overlayed over cedar?

Yes you can in fact lay over Cedar with steel siding, I would install 3/8" or 1/2" 4X8 insulation board first giving you a flat surface to work with. but you should no doing this you will need to build out the windows to 1 1/4" and then wrap them so you may have a nice edge to place your J-Channel next to. Will be starting up videos by the end of August and can show how that is done at that time if we have enough interest in that.

We have a single story 50's ranch and need new siding. I want to get steel siding after looking at hardie board, lp board, and vinyl. But finding a steel siding installer/contractor seems next to impossible here. We are in the Bloomington Indiana area. Can you give any help on locating an installer.

You may want to be more direct with them vinyl siding guys and ask them like this... "WILL YOU INSTALL STEEL SIDING IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT" today if you are the general contractor... order all the parts your self then you should get it done for around $600.00 other wise it will run anywere from $900-1200

@@letsdiymyhome The QE rep called me and I will be getting samples. And as far as certification, they don't have one. But, he was looking into who has purchased it from the dealers near me. He said my other option was to find a siding person willing to do it and he would meet with them and go over installation procedures with the contractor and then let me know if he thought the contractor was competent to do it. I know the steel is more than vinyl, but how do prices usually compare to hardie board which seems to be the only real alternative around here other than vinyl. If I have to order it for the installer will the installer be able to tell me what I need to get?

@@letsdiymyhome My contractor search has been frustrating seems covid is messing with everything. I did find someone to do the install, but now prices are crazy. In your video you talk about Menards being over priced, but they seem to be the only affordable source. My quotes for quality edge are over 560 a square as well as true log. Menards has it on sale for 300 a square, well really $337 since you actually just get a 11% rebate. That still is a lot less. If Menards doesn't work out it looks like vinyl in the future, but even getting decent vinyl seems cost prohibitive right now.

Well up north were we having bellow freezing, so Steel Siding in FL. I would put Hardi board on in a min. Must note: Hardie board is twice the money of steel siding today.

@@sherip1270 People are making a bigger deal about rust then is needed.... I have it on my home and its not rusting. The problem today is everyone thinks they need to cut the steel siding with a Skill saw and end up burning the metal witch just voided the warranty. That is bad practice and we do not allow are siders to use skill saws on steel siding. Install correctly you get a 50yr warranty on it .that covers rust to! I hope that helps SteveOOO

The amount of foul language in this video..... But seriously, it's good infor. Yes vinyl is cheap but it's easy to install and is mostly dent resistant. It does disintegrate over time and can crack as it gets older. Steel and aluminum siding needs to be handled carefully so as not to dent it or twist it. It can also be dented once installed and like any other painted surface, will eventually fade and need painting or replacing. i would never go with hardi- plank. That is just particle board. Its very cheap and will absorb moisture and literally disintegrate.

You are entitled to your 2 cents, and I will just say you will see soon vinyl siding will in fact disform at 120-130 degrees and fade as every product will. I will take a dent in my siding before getting holes in it like vinyl does so you see there is no perfect product on the market and its all a personal choice and thank you for being respectful.
