I see I created quite the firestorm in the comment section so I'll pin this here😅 For Tip 2: Check this video out from Long Island Watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J8oyxKlLXps.html Modern watches are made to be shock resistant. People wear mechanical to golf, shooting ranges, mountain biking and to war! The palm of the hand is a soft shock absorbing surface like a pillow or cushion, I'm no telling you to smack your watch on a table lol. The jeweller I talked about has 30 years experience and owns an AD with over 7 swiss and japanese brands along with grey market luxury watches like Rolex IWC Omega etc. I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing. Edit: A commenter said he saw a watchmaker do this trick but paid it no mind at the time. For Tip 3: Here's another video from Long Island Watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y_zDht9pl5U.html Someone in the comments said that golf tape solvent and isopropyl alcohol do essentially the same thing. by dipping only the bezel in the solvent for a short time (much shorter than what mark did with his watch) should not be a problem. I also mentioned to do this with cheap watches that are hard to return and out of warranty (AliX, used watches etc.) OBVIOUSLY don't do this with a Rolex Sub haha

@sivanstar 7 месяцев назад
You can drive with pressing the gas pedal with your hand but you use your foot? Why is that? Bc it was intended to. Yes modern movements ahould withstand some shovks and bumps but it doesn't mean you should smack it! And no rational watchmaker will tell you to. And even if it is out of warranty or from ali. Do it the right way or dont do it at all. Take it to a watchmaker and a jeweler is not a watchmaker.

Wow... these were fantastic tips. I have a tip... If your watch is running 10s a day fast, or slow... try resting it overnight at different positions. (face up, down, crown side up - down) In most cases it will correct itself. (depends on the movement and your results may vary, but give it a try)

I clicked on this video saying "Hmmmph, I've been collecting for too long, there's nothing NEW I'm gonna learn here" but I have to admit I had never tried smacking my un-wound watch against my palm, although after it was demonstrated, I do remember seeing a watchmaker using the technique in the past, but I paid it no mind. 👍🏽Given!

Nice! My jeweller probably learned it from the numerous watchmakers he works with, I'm super grateful for your comment because there's an uproar in the comment section about this haha.

Please list that watchmaker so I can recommend that people avoid him. Banging a watch will eventually do permanent damage.
@DarthPlaya
@DarthPlaya 7 месяцев назад
@@rickjason215 I think you are misunderstanding the proccedure. You don't have to "Bang" anything. It's actually the arc of the sharp arm movement that brings the watch to life. It's basically the same as a "shake to start" watch movement, but only using one initial shake to get it started and insure it's operational. No one in their right mind would "BANG" their watch (on purpose) against anything. Using your palm is only supposed to impart extra motion to the rotor (and to possibly be a safeguard against flinging your Rolex across the room)😂 .... It's all in the wrist!
@bobbrowne3027
@bobbrowne3027 2 месяца назад
You could always tie some string to the watch and lash it your cars bumper then drive round the block a couple of times. That will wind it via the rotor without having the hard work of unscrewing the crown.

I fail to see the benefit of the “smack the watch in the palm of your hand” technique. Since the watch isn’t running, you’ll still have to deploy the crown to set the time before wearing it. While doing that, just give it a few winds and you’re all set. I also quite enjoy interacting with my watches. I’m not very comfortable with the bezel alignment fix either, as I’d be afraid of creating a bigger problem than you’re trying to fix (ie the lume pip falling off). I think I’d leave that fix to the professionals.

I've struggled with clockwise alignment with my crowns - great tip on going counter; love the winder tip, too. I'm not touching the bezel tip with a 10 foot pole. 😀Thanks for these NWC!

Screwing in a crown is not cracking a safe - just push it in gently and turn it clockwise. In over 20+ years of using mechanical watches I've never had an issue with the normal way of doing things. Also I wouldn't slap your watch like that. It's not good for the hairspring, pallet fork and escapement wheel, amongst other things. As for bezel alignment, try before you buy and/or ask for photos. It shouldn't be your business to fix a manufacturing fault.

Smacking does the same thing as shaking except with a lot more force, which isn't good or mechanical watches. The "smacking" just creates more kinetic energy which equals more winding. PLEASE DON'T "SMACK" YOUR WATCHES, IT'S ABUSE!

dude don't smack your watch! some movements are more fragile than others. take your time with setting the time and winding it. you will enjoy your watch much more. and take your watch to a watchmaker, dont be cheap. the alcohol can dissolve grease like on gaskets.
@michaelmyers4176
@michaelmyers4176 7 месяцев назад
No shit what is this guy thinking? Smaking your watch is NOT recommended by any professional watch maker. Just saying. That jeweler told this guy wrong for sure. All of these things this guy spoke about in his video is definitely don’t take everything you see on RU-vid seriously. Cause this guy is giving bad advice. Alcohol with also gladly dissolve your gaskets as well.

@@michaelmyers4176 i googled it before i commented, some alcohol dont harm rubber like others but id never do what he recommended, i actually pop the bezel myself and realign it correctly. Can you imagine someone smacking a luxury vintage watch bc this guy said so???

I use googone and a Qtip around the edge of the insert for removal. Takes almost an hour to be able to budge it. Or what if you try small bits of duct tape to grip the insert, move it, then clean the residue with googone?

That is no way to wind a watch. Giving it some gentle shakes without the unnecessary impact against your palm is the way to go. The impact could very easily move the beat and timing levers. I don't want to say that this is the stupidest thing I've ever seen.......but I'll say it , it's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. Also, if your automatic movement has handwinding, do that, a few turns is enough. No shaking or hitting it against an immovable force. Using the alcohol, will result in eventually losing the insert. Another stupid idea.
@dgrantreiter
@dgrantreiter 7 месяцев назад
To make a broad spectrum statement like modern watches are made to be shock resistant is stupid. Movements and the shock resistance is completely movement specific. Then you state not to do this with a Rolex "Ha Ha" Better to survive your obvious lack of watch knowledge with a Rolex than a inexpensive Miyota or older Seiko 5 movement. Do us all a huge favor and don't make part 2 so some newbie in the hobby dosen't learn bad habits or destroy a watch.
