It depends on the variety of raspberry. Some are primocane-bearing raspberries whereas other varieties are floricane-bearing. Same goes for blackberries. Before pruning, check your variety. 😉👍

If you don't prune your raspberry canes, they may bend all the way over, touch the ground, and take root. Though last year I purposely allowed this to happen because I wanted the plants to form a hedge of thorns to keep large pests out. Wild raspberries, which I also found growing randomly, are more likely to do this. Their fruit is perfectly edible too, but the plants contain a hundred times more thorns.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 5 месяцев назад
Yup, that's why I suggest to prune to 4 or 5 feet high.... But yeah, making a raspberry hedge? Also awesome!

We pruned during the fall. Why again in spring? Replacing plants does this mean dig up old ones or just add new?. Why did our berries get smaller over the years? Used to be so big.@@TheRipeTomatoFarms

With so many other things going on in the spring I prune in the fall when I still see where the berries has been. Then in spring I cleanse the soil through fire. Don't cut those tall buggers, I use a trellis instead to keep them from breaking

I was curious, because I've never really done anything but harvest fruit from my (black raspberry) patches. The dogs chasing rabbits in and out of the patches break the old dead canes for me, and I just let them be, as I figure the nutrients in the canes are the same nutrients the plants take out of the soil, so they'll help maintain the soil health. Going on 20 yrs with the patches, and they still produce far more fruit than I need, so the birds and the groundhogs help me out with the extra.

With my raspberry here in northern pa I find that cutting all the canes to the ground in the spring gives us a bounty of berries late summer all the way into fall. This year I found 3 canes that did not bloom or bear last year si I’ll leave them as a test for an early crop.

Just found your channel and I do appreciate how you go over things. You seem to talk about feeding the garden a lot, and being a newbie, I've recently invested and started growing things. Is that necessary? Is it more something to ensure the crops are nice and bountiful? I have not bought any veggie food like that since there seems to be such a variety, (on top of learning that all plants appreciate different balances) and that's why I'm wondering if it's a must. After a bit of learning, I'm also late on planting but I am proud when I get things to sprout!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 5 месяцев назад
Great question Beth. I subscribe to the notion that we should feed and nurture our soils so it can feed our plants. Container growers will likely need additional nutrients, but larger beds and plots can be sustained on compost and organic mulches, no question. When in doubt, a soil sample test will tell you if you are low on any of the key nutrients.

Thank you for your videos. Very educational. Question please. Is it too early to prune if we are to expect future nights back into the 20s again. We have had crazy swings in the weather. Last frost date May 9 Thanks!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 5 месяцев назад
Pruning can cause suckers to sprout...if you don't need them to expand the patch, then you can prune no problem at any time during winter......the reason to wait until spring is just so we're able to tell the shoots apart.

ISN’T IT TRUE THAT RASPBERRIES AND BLACK BERRIES SHOULD NOT BE PLANTED NEAR EACH OTHER ? HOW FAR APART SHOULD THEY BE FROM EACH OTHER TO PREVENT THE RASPBERRIES FROM TURNING DARK ?

@CMDRSloma
@CMDRSloma 5 месяцев назад
This pruning only applies to Summer fruiting raspberries, Autumn fruiting raspberries needs to be pruned at the ground level in late winter, early spring because Autumn fruiting raspberries fruit on 1 year canes. Don't know why you omitted the difference between them.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 5 месяцев назад
One, they are smaller, less popular, and less prevalent in the industry. And two, it's a myth that you have to cut them right down and a waste. They don't ONLY produce fruit on the primocanes....they just have the ability to. Big difference. They will still turn into floricanes if left alone and bear fruit as well.
@CMDRSloma
@CMDRSloma 5 месяцев назад
@@TheRipeTomatoFarmsTrue, but I found out they don't produce as much as in their first year. New canes are more vigorous. They might be smaller, but when you can't grow them in the ground due to lack of space, they are a better option for pots. I don't know about popularity in the US or Canada, but in Europe where I live they are quite popular. Still worth to mention the distinction.
@janerossab6930
@janerossab6930 5 месяцев назад
I have everbearing and right now I cut the canes that fruited in the fall just under the clumps of old berries. Then the short canes produce first and the new growth will produce in late summer.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 5 месяцев назад
@@janerossab6930 yup...its why people who hack it all down every year call them autumn bearing and people who let both primocanes and floricanes fruit call them everbearing. No right or wrong way, but I prefer to let those varieties have both stalk types to maximize my yield.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
