Sounds to me that if you have to tether your LGD you probably shouldn't have that particular dog, I'd think it would be best to retire that dog early and either keep it as a pet or rehome it and start over with a new puppy.
I'm obsessed with Turkish LGDs. Seeing them in action on this farm substantiates my admiration for these dogs. The border collies are very talented as well.
We had a couple of maremmas. One was a doll with chickens. Chased one once as a puppy and never again after "no". Other one was not a great protector but a great coyote deterrent. He was tethered on a long chain to a car tire to slow him down a little when we had pigs but he minded cattle very well without tethering. We eventually sold both of them as we got out of chickens, pigs, and sheep. 1st one defended goats in coyote and cougar territory until the day she died, and 2nd stayed with a cattle herd on thousands of acres with no losses. Sometimes its about finding the right stock and circumstance for the dog
Omygosh. The cuteness of Judge at 00:30 It's like that ONE week where he wasn't tiny, but wasn't massive yet 😂 ( Still pretty massive) Cause I swear that cutie went from puppy to GIANT in a month 😂
Your channel is the best. 👍 More people should treat their LGD the way you do. Never tether them. 🚨 I saw a video of lgds tethered and a pack of Wolves Killed them both. They couldn't get away or even to help eachother.😰
Train my live stock dogs on invisibility fence, told it couldn’t be done because they are too independent, not true they smart and understand they have boundaries. Work with all of them about a week and now they don’t even wear the shock collars . We have seven aces and three Akbash ages 2,4,6 . Our oldest passed a few weeks ago he was ten ,that’s the only thing that sucks they don’t live long enough for me .
I trained all my hunting dog. And one thing i learned a good blood line its in their genes ...95% of the training Comes natural. I had a lab that i used for duck hunting. We had been out duck hunting that morning and at noon pheasant season opened. So i figure ok lets see if we can walk around the high grass along a creek. I let the dog go with us rather then sit in the truck. To my suprise we went 100 yards and I seen he was standing lower then normal look at something so i started to walk over to see what he was looking at. Up flew a roaster got hin out about 35 yards. The dog ran over and with in seconds stopped and pionted him out. Ealked over and sure enough there it was. Now that dog i never tained for pheasant. I used him to retreive water fowl. Same thing with a german shepherd i had. I paid top dollar for him from a breader that sold all his pups to u.s. boarders patrol and other government agencies. He didnt want to sell him to me at first but finally he agreed. At 2 yrs old he was the best gaurd dog and i never trained him at. Both property and personal. He was a huge shepherd for the most part..108 lbs. And was not affraid of any thing
They wouldn’t take off but our goats / sheep would wander and we have a road in front of us and to the side. It would be dangerous. Our goats would go in the road and so would the lgd
@@raventreeranch great reply and your other answer is the predators will have easy access which they can use to snatch and go with one of the babies 😢. ❤Bo, Lily and Judge are my favorite gang ❤
The dig but never try to dig out. This was based on scenarios that we haven’t experienced because we train and monitor our dogs progress. Based on other peoples usage
We have a 1 year old LGD she will stay in the pasture during the day but she chases/play with the baby goats and won't let my ducks out of the pond. Up front she will not stay in the yard. We are putting up better fencing along with sport dog fencing. We have been working with her daily on the babies and ducks. It just seems like it's taking her forever to get the idea. If she is out on the tie up front and the ducks go up the driveway she will alert us.
Mine took 2 years for it to sink in and her settle down enough to be untethered without supervision, or with lambs under 3 months - I thought the males would take longer since bitches tend to mature faster but nope, not with this one. More energetic and playful than any other I've had - Breeder said her siblings were like that too, so likely a bad pairing.
Use of a tether for any dog should be a last resort. TY for the video, I love your content. Also, was that a baby Bo i seen there? The first me seeing him as a puppy. :)
Disagree strongly with Ksweetpea because of what LizCasetta explains can & has happened.LGD's are always in danger of being killed by predators if they're chained/tied or there aren't enough dogs working that can help each other/back each other up.Tethering a dog on a long chain with a tire to slow him down will also slow him down if a predator attacks the dog to where he can't fight, get away, thus getting the dog killed
A tether? What is that? I have a hunting dog, but she is not on a leash ever. She stays with us every single time. Poor thing has such anxiety we can't even leave her outside without us outside as well. Her previous owner just absolutely loved her so much. And we absolutely love her. I think we need another dog soon too.
I agree with keeping them w stock but not with minimal human interaction. We spend lots of time w our lgd. Especially as puppies. Monitoring, observing, training when needed.
@Raventree Ranch Thank you. I am not in favor of the Western version of training. If that dog needs a vet in the future, the stress alone from not being exposed to cages, homes, and vehicles could do more harm than good. Their origins clearly show they are 100% bonded with their shepherds as well as their charges for those very reasons. PS. I love your channel!
In most parts of Germany exists a test for lgd to make Sure they do the Job right. They are allowd to react to humane they dont know, but not in a aggressiv way of any shape or form. Training your dog is important
I live in a city. I use to keep my pitbull in a pet training cage until I noticed that someone was agitating her whenever they walked by the window. Now I let run freely throughout the house. Now, they think twice before breaking in.
Question: If you have an escape artist, could a invisible fence be an option? They'd still have free range inside their area to fight, defend, and maneuver, but there would be a stopping point. Could the collar also act as a protective barrier for the LGD's throat?
potentially but it could lead to them being unable to chase away predators properly, and if the predators escape and are around often they'll learn your dog can't go a certain distance and will use that as an advantage. LGDs shouldn't be escape artists..it's like a gun that doesn't fire, it's not good for your flock and not good for the dog so it's best if you try again with a new puppy (you can either rehome the escape artist or keep it as just a 2nd LGD with the new one being able to give backup with threats)
If the dog is willful enough, an e-collar is just a distraction. Smart ones figure out they just have to run fast and far enough the collar won't activate. Or dogs with high pain tolerance just consiqer it an itch. The prongs on an e-collar also point toward the dog so an odd bite could potentially push those prongs against your dog more. All that said, one of my dogs was not an escape artist and she leaned toward the timid side so it worked for her, but my other two are more willful/have high pain tolerance so it was wasted on them.
Roads, they could be shot by another farmer who may mistake them as a threat to their own herd, attacked by neighbor LGDs for similar reasons as why they'd be shot, and pack predators could overwhelm and kill them (like a group of coyotes).
I'm not going to lie this came off as pretty judgy, there are legitimate reasons for why certain farmers need to tether their Livestock Guardian Dogs, specifically when they are puppies while still in training. There are even multiple homesteaders and farmers even here on RU-vid that have used kenneling and tethering to bond the dogs with the stock. Just because it worked for you to not do it doesn't automatically mean that everyone else is a "red flag" for doing it.
I didnt even know this was a thing, leave it to degenerate humans to ruin absolutely anything and everything that is whole and pure. if you cant handl a dog, get it a new home. dont torture the animal because you are lacking
