VIDEOS
1) When you have a tractor-trailer license you job options are more extensive. Most companies that have straight trucks, but dump trucks for example, pull trailers called pups. When a dump truck pulls a pup, it becomes a tractor-trailer license and requires a Class 1 ("A") license. Most often, these companies only hire tractor trailer drivers, even though they have straight trucks.
2) If the job that you are working toward doesn't suit your needs in a year or whatnot, you can go to the next job with your tractor trailer license. Tractor trailer companies are always looking for drivers; and you will soon be employed at another company with a tractor trailer license. With any lower license class you're going to be challenged finding another job.
3) The work required to get a tractor trailer license is not very much more than getting a bus or straight truck license. Most of the work you do to get your straight truck license is the same as getting a tractor trailer license. And in many places, when you get a tractor trailer license, you also get a bus license. In British Columbia, Canada, you get every commercial license with a Class 1 license. In Ontario, Canada, you get a Class C (coach & transit bus) license when you get your tractor trailer license. And often, the cost to get your tractor trailer license isn't significantly more than getting your straight truck license.
If you can manage the money part and the extra time commitment, I council you to get your tractor trailer license.
Good luck on your road test!

Hey man. Just did my second day of cdl class A. I truthfully don’t think I have the semi gene in my body and truthfully the big rig long hauling scares the shit out of me. Now with times changing, when I completely my class A, will I still be able do local dump truck driving or in the mines?

Hey Rick. What are your thoughts on the minimum wage impact to trucking. I know there is a shortage right now and I can’t imagine this increase is gonna help the business. Having said that just wondering if you see a wage increase across the board in trucking or will we see the pay stay the same until we start to see a mass exodus of drivers for jobs like Walmart making 15 a hour to put milk and cat litter on the shelf.
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 6 лет назад
Hi James Flynn - I don't see any increase to the wages for truck drivers. There are, however, some good paying jobs for drivers with experience. It's just a matter of doing a bit of searching, a bit of luck to find the job that works for you with good pay. All the best, Cheers Rick

How do you perform a tug test on a automatic truck. You press on the gas ?
@smartdrivetest
@smartdrivetest 5 лет назад
Hi Edluis Rivera - Thank you for your comment and query. You simply leave the parking brakes applied, put the transmission in to gear and attempt to move the vehicle forward. If the brakes are holding the vehicle shouldn't move. If the vehicle moves, it is Out of Service and you need to contact a technician. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

Good day sir. How could a truck driver located in Europe with a European licence and semi truck driving experience go about obtaining a CDL in Canada with all the necessary immigration resolved . Does the Canadian authority consider foreign driving experience and driver licence equivalence without retesting ? Would it be necessary to complete the whole driving sequence eg. G and then A+ Z, with road tests and examination ?Are there more faciltated means as through a trucking company or a Canadian province without all the lengthy road testing and truck driving ministry process ? Thank-you.

Hello Annibal Moreira - thanks for your comment and query. I know that some licensing authorities have a transfer agreement. First we would need to know which province you are thinking of going to? And which authority currently issues your license. We might be able to find that information out from the website of the province where you are thinking of working. I'm certain you won't have to do the car training, but you might have to do a bit of truck training. All the best, Cheers Rick

For Canada, it is important that the minimum length of service is 2 years (preferably 3) for the required category. I'll have to take full-fledged exams (theory + driving). What is the European experience? It gives you the opportunity to take exams without training. But as practice shows, in automobile driving schools all the same people come and take courses. There are differences between the European rules and the Canadian rules and there are subtleties on which the examiners take practice. To understand how and what the examiner will take, people recommend visiting a driving school. Depending on the province, there are additional conditions. Well, because of the existing European experience, it is possible to hand over the category of a passenger vehicle very quickly and without problems. And again, because of the European experience, you will be able to pay insurance at a low rate.

Hi Sat an - thank you for that detailed information- that is valuable my friend. If you have further questions, let me know the province you're thinking of immigrating to, and I'll see what I can find on the driving authority's website. All the best, Cheers Rick

Hi Claire Lee - Thank you for your comment and query. If this is really what you want to do Claire, then yes. It's going to be tough to find a job right out of truck driving school, but with hard work and perseverance you can get a job as a truck driver. Have a look at Bill's story: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-coZxfDZEbZ4.html&index=5&list=PL0x-bChcUvwGCubq7hwj5EPege1hjY0om If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Sir Rick, yeah i got my tractor trailer license since April 2016, the only thing is i submit a cover letter and resume and abstract to companies, and they won't hire me cause i have no experience, i want a stable driving job even its not driving a tractor trailer job, thats why i went on to obtain my license. is there a way to get driving job experience??
@smartdrivetest

Hi ryan meana - Thank you for your comment and query. You can't just drop off applications and expect a company to hire you. You have to beg, borrow and steal to get a job. You need to bang on a lot of doors to get a job, and get whatever experience you can to get to the job that you want. Have a look at this video for some more information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MT5LmS-TpYQ.html&list=PL0x-bChcUvwGCubq7hwj5EPege1hjY0om&index=2 If there's anything further we can do drop us a note. I just got my cdl not long ago and I was wondering what you recommend for people that are starting to drive? I was told that over the road trucking is probably best. Reason why Im asking is because I dont really know what is out there.

Hi Nason Livingston - that is a awesome news. Thank you for letting us know. I'm sure you had a big celebration, and it is well deserved owing to your overcoming nerves. If you can do over-the-road for a year, it is a great way to get experience. But it's not for everyone. As well, have a look at these videos for more information about finding a job: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-419mhKtYBG0.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MT5LmS-TpYQ.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Enjoy your newly earned freedom. All the best, Cheers Rick 🚛

Hi Edmour Gagnon - thank you for your comment. Do you know which truck driving school that is...or is there only one there in Peterborough? I would like to investigate that a little bit further. Are you considering going to truck driving school. All the best, Cheers Rick

Smart Drive Test Hi. Just checked and it says 8 weeks training. 200 hours... Thanks for your time. The biggest vehicule i drove was a school bus in Guatemala years ago. Almost spent 10 years over there. Long story... Just got my First Aid certificate back. My G licence back ( because i was gone for so long)... Will re-apply to get a police record check once more( never ran into problems). I am a bit confused right now... There seem to be so many cies. So many tricks you have to know in order not to loose money... Maybe i simply watched too many videos. Many said that if there was a real shortage cies would actually pay for new drivers to learn like Prime does in the States... Why do they help newcomers when we have to put ourselves in debt here north of the border? www.riccpcc.serviceontario.ca/pcc/jsp/report/PCCProgramList.jsp?start=50 Thanks again Gy

Hi Edmour Gagnon - the link you sent me didn't go to the page. Are you looking at Fleming College? There are some bigger companies that will help - Challenger, Bison, and I believe Schnieder National has a Canadian base there in Ontario. It's not easy, but there are ways to get help. All the best, Cheers Rick
