One important thing I didn't mention in the video: the hiring process takes place at the same time as your last term in school. You can't do it after you graduate because the hiring schedule you'll join will be the for the year after that. It'll leave you with a 1-year gap, which means you won't have a valid visa to stay in Japan with because you can't use your student visa anymore. You'll also be seen as a NEET for a year, which will hurt your job application.

While I've not been through shukatsu myself, I've heard about the experiences of many people going through it during my undergrad and Master's. While for most degrees in the humanities people are expected to just have an undergrad degree, for people doing engineering or something related to hard sciences a Master's is expected. Generally speaking, people in the humanities only do a PhD if they want to have a career in academia. If you're going for an entry-level job that's not related to engineering or hard sciences your level of Japanese becomes quite an asset. Anyways, excellent video as always and good luck to anyone trying to get a job in these difficult times!!

Late reply, but thank you so much for this comment! One of my concerns while making this video was that it only covers humanities. I believe your comment will help people who stumble upon this video.

Hi Mizhelle, thanks so much for the video. This is so insightful cause I won't be able to get this sort of information from websites. I graduated from a uni in the UK so I'm not familiar with the job hunting process for undergrads in Japan (especially as an international student that requires visa sponsorship). That's why perhaps my best bet is to get my master's first then I can network and get a job after completing my postgrad. If I may ask, what course did you take for your Master's and what type of job do you currently have?

Apologies for the late reply! I specialized in gender and media and I now work in the travel industry as a digital marketer. Might not seem related, but the background in how to do research and analyze data helped immensely in preparing me for the job.

Thanks for this. Do you have higher chances to get work visa sponsored when you finished master’s in Japan? I’ll be having my MA and PhD in Japan and I wish to work permanently in Japan after my grad school. :)

I'm finishing my undergraduate degree in economics in Brazil and I'm thinking of moving to Japan to get a Master's degree at a Japanese University and maybe later get a PhD. I'll be 22 years old this year and I have almost no experience yet (so I'm sort of like the "blank plate" you mentioned I guess). Do you think I'm likely to get a job at a Japanese company after finishing my Master's in Japan? And how easy do you think it would be for me to get an academic job like Associate Professor, Lecturer or Researcher in Japan doing this?

Hi Guilherme! I can’t really say for sure because there are many factors in play when it comes to job opportunities. In terms of getting an academic job, there are two in my circle that have gone on to teach, so it’s definitely possible. Invest in learning Japanese, it’ll help a lot. Not just in your career, but also in your personal life. You’ll need a support system when you start living in a different country, and language plays a big role in this.

hello I don't know if you're goning to see my comment but I'm trying to get next to go to the graduate program of interdisciplinary information studies in university of tokyo for the socio-information and communication studies course but it says it requires japanese knowledge but they don't state what level? do you have any information on that? thank you for this informative video!

In my time, I think they just required basic Japanese. It's probably best to get in touch with admin. I believe they have a dedicated email address for inquiries. Todai also has Japanese language classes you can take on the side, so you can definitely work on your language skills while you do your studies. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Best of luck to you!

Does western country give value to Japanese degree..I am heart ly want to your answer about this subject matter?
@Mizhelle
@Mizhelle 2 года назад
I am neither from a western country nor do I live in one so I’m not the best person to ask about this one. But based on the people around me, people enroll in a Japanese university because they intend to: 1) work in Japan; 2) work in a Japanese company based in another country; 3) have Japanese clients; or 4) teach something related to Japan.
