UPDATE 07/09/2017 - I am not a mechanic. I had missed opening the bleed bolt and disconnecting an outlet pipe when draining the coolant - I got the Workshop CD-ROM after I made this video. #LFMF.
I found galvanic corrosion in my 2.3 litre Ducato Maxi's radiator, so I drain, flush and replace the coolant for one with corrosion prevention that's suitable for an aluminium block.
I am not a mechanic.
Wikipedia says that this "Multijet" Iveco engine is NOT the same as that in a Relay, Boxer or Promaster, but the video might help you anyway.
I am not a mechanic. There is probably a tool for more easily extracting the plastic valve screw.

There are not only 4 bolts on the top of the grill, but also 2 srews at the bottom. I wanted to remove it the same way you did, but because I did not unscrew the bottom ones, one broke off.

handy little video clip, knowing there is a drain plug and where it is, as i was being told to remove a hose pipe

I had a quick Google and I've seen that you might need to find a drain plug on the engine as well as the radiator to make sure the old coolant is gone. The community on fiatforum.com are super helpful. Have a search on there (free to join) and you will find everything you want to know about your vehicle, I'm sure.

Great video Thinking of doing my ducato maxi 40 3.0 next week I have everything ready Is this all I need to do buddy drain from the radiator plug ? I don’t want to go too crazy ocd attacking it 😂 just a few flushes to get new coolant put in been told the bleed screw is fine do you agree or go further to get everything ok the matrix and so on Cheers

It's possible (probable even) that the 3.0l engine has a different radiator or cooling system - although the heater matrix is likely identical. I would take a look under the front edge of the van and see if the drain plug is in the same place and if you can easily access it without taking off the front. Same for the heater matrix vent valve in the 2nd video I link to in the description. If your van has had any kind of radweld or similar added in its history, consider hosing out the turbo intercooler which you might be able to do without uninstalling it from the van.... Just disconnect the hoses. You'll need to take off the front for that and check that you are able to remove and refit the hose clamps yourself or you'll be stranded! These days, I get the garage to flush the system during a service. The chemicals are a bit nasty to the environment I have learned and you might not like that in your yard. Also, that bottom screw is a pain in the area. 😎

I've got a similar situation. So what was the original issue exactly? What coolant did you use instead of which?

"red" coolant is the one to go for - There was what looked like a mix of brands and types in there before. Aluminium engine block with an aluminium radiator. NOTE: I have no idea how this video became popular - I am not a mechanic. Many months later, I discovered the staining in the reservoir was because of a radweld-type product being used. I put in a new radiator, which was pretty easy to DIY with no specialist tools and affordable from my local auto-parts supplier. The intercooler was also a bit clogged up, but a garden hose sorted that. I still have a *slight* leak in the heating heat-exchanger which means I get a little more condensation in the cab. This van turned out to be a junker - had the engine swapped at 140K

Gentle with the screw, you say, but still you use a pair of pliers on it?
@Mevi

A screw driver just wanted to snap the head right off. It's plastic and turning with the right sized screwdriver made the head splay out without even budging. No doubt it's perished. I still need to pick up a replacement screw. Thanks for reminding me. 👍

Fair enough, I didn't catch that it was plastic. But I'd prefer a proper spanner to pliers any day, to avoid rounding off the head.

Spanners and sockets didn't work either. The slots in the head squeezed together so nothing could get a grip. Pliers could grab the flange below the screw head.

Just got mine done yesterday. The original radiator had a plastic plug that a 13mm socket fit nicely on, and my new radiator has a round plastic plug that I could use a coin in the slot of.

Hey that's good news. I guess I just wasn't lucky with mine. Thanks for the update. 😎👍

How old is the van? Doesnt look too old judging by the lights and such.
@Mevi
@Mevi 6 лет назад
animal79thecat it's an early 2011. The Ducato, Boxer & Relay had a facelift in 2014. The Promaster has the old face with updated lights and grill.

You don't need to take off the panel.. You can get your hand in the gap at the bottom of the panel. Use a small stubby flat screw driver.. Easy.. Just done mine

Silly me didn't get a hold of the workshop manual until after the video - I made a part 2 to fill in some of the gaps. The rad screw of mine was badly perished, so a screwdriver wouldn't have done more than tear the top off. 😬 What was the condition of your screw? I need to pick up a new screw ahead of my next flush!

It'd be better to empty the radiator then start the van and have the water running from the tap hose to the top of the radiator while it's open from the bottom to clean the coolant system first then swith the tap off let the van clear all the water then turn it off the nutt back then start the van and add the coolant
