The portrait used in Grandma has actually has an interesting history behind it. It's from a series of paintings where the painter, Theodore Gericault, one day decided to do portraits of people who were mentally ill. The one used in Grandma is called "Portrait of a Woman Suffering from Obsessive Envy".

Wait, so mark started this "I don't exist" stuff 11 months ago? Wow.

The painting at 18:58 is called ‘’La monomane de l’envie’’ and was painted by the french artist Théodore Géricault around the year 1820. This is one of the 5 paintings from his series of portraits of mentally ill people. At this time, doctors theorized that some mental illness can be seen in some facial traits, so they started to do comparisons between mentally ill and healthy people using paintings, then photographies when it was invented around 20 years later. And Géricault participated to it with those paintings, but also for an empathic reason. He was really depressed, so he felt a connection with those people suffering from mental illnesses like him. Mental illnesses in Art History is one of my favorite subject, it’s really interesting. And I also literally studied and analyzed Géricault’s work during my Art History class yesterday. To whoever end up reading this, I hope you found that interesting, and if you want take a first step into the world of artists’ work influenced by mental illnesses, the youtuber Feldup did a great video about it. It’s in french, sorry, I don’t know any other trustable source in english, it’s not my first language
