In this video we teach the pre-cursor to a solid down-stay. This technique can be used with puppies to start their stay, or use these three tips to fix a "broken" stay. This method also fixes the dog that "pops up" or gets up once they're in the down. Follow our three tips to get a longer relaxed down-stay for your pet or service dogs.

What an exceptionally beautiful girl. We had a heeler mix that looked very much like her, but she didn't _act_ like a heeler. She was still a sweet, chill girl.

Love the herding breeds! CoolWhip is actually an Australian Koolie. Same country, slightly differently built dog - more like a Kelpie. Love my herdy dogs!

Wow! I don't think my Corgi likes the straight down (been okay with the sit stay or "wait" (stay for me coming back). But always gets up. I hadn't thought maybe she wasn't comfortable. I wondered how the heck I'd get a long stay when she keeps popping up. This looks amazing. (I know you didn't mention--but seems she should have a different cue for this one--eventually anyway). Also I don't know if you use clicker but clicking seems not a good idea here. She gets up every time she hears the clicker. (Hey hey I know Karen Pryor was not for luring, but our secret will be safe. :) )
@DoggyU
@DoggyU Год назад
I don't use a clicker here specifically because it will excite most dogs. My cue for the tipped hip is "relax". And I'm not a shaping purist (though it is one of my favorite methods along with targeting). I think if there's an easy way to explain something to our dogs and we can get rid of the lure in a very quick amount of time, this works best for this instance, and for a lot of the pet guardians that watch my channel who may not be as comfortable shaping behavior ;)

Just came across your channel, searching for training to kayak. My 2 yr old 80 lb lab loves to swim and would rather be swimming beside my kayak. But when she gets tired she wants in. After a struggle I get her in. But she won't stay in the boat for more than 5 min max, and leaps off the kayak. Help!

These tricks are so helpful! Do you also have a video to teach the fold back down? I tried following steps from other videos, but my dog tends to move her feet a lot when folding down.

Hi Dan - I don't yet but I will soon. I have a guide dog pup I'm raising starting in march and I'll be doing a video on that. That being said, I tend to use a front foot target to train this behavior and if you're getting a lot of movement, a foot target tends to help. Watch this video to get you started on the foot target and if you get stuck and need specific help/video review of your training than check out my patreon page at patreon.com/doggyu. Hope that helps!

If you don’t mind me helping out, I can explain how. Take two treats, drop one in front of your dog so it goes after the treat. Cover the floored treat with your foot, and say “leave it.” If they do, click and reward with second treat. (Or just reward). (Omg i just noticed how late I am.))

@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 года назад
HI Atulya - dogs of any age can be trained. The cattle dog in all my videos was a rescue that I got at 2 years old. He had had no training prior. All the concepts and techniques on this channel can be use for adult dogs or puppies :)

My dog has bad back legs (dislocated knees and other issues we don't fully know yet), will this hurt him by doing the hip-tip? I'm worried it'll be uncomfortable for him.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 года назад
Hi Questionable - Thanks for reaching out! I am not a vet so I can't offer advice in this realm. I would ask your vet about your dog's physical limitations before starting any training program. If you think it would be uncomfortable, it probably would be, so modify the training accordingly. Happy Training!

Just wanted to comment on the Platform--looked at the Klimb and dear me it is $$$$$. K&H cots are STILL available but Amazon isn't selling them. You can buy off Chewy and K&H sells directly. So you might fix your link.

Should your release word be the same or different from the release for wait command.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 года назад
My release word is the same across the board. It's always "free" unless I were asking for a different behavior after the first one. (ie. wait, then touch or something like that).

@@DoggyU I tried the hip thing this morning, because he's started to pop up as soon as he gets the reward, but it also made him just stand up.
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 года назад
@@leahthompson1 Break it down into much smaller pieces. First reward for head turning slightly, then reward for turning more, then reward for weight shift. Also try doing it on a couch or dog bed. Some dogs feel uncomfortable on harder surfaces. Hope that helps!

I want to try this but the dog is so food oriented that she doesn't listen to commands. She's pushy and just tries to steal it from you. Any videos or suggestions?
@DoggyU
@DoggyU 2 года назад
Hi Alexandria! Welcome to the channel! It sounds like your pup needs to work on some impulse control around food. I would check out videos on “it’s yer choice” or the clamshell game to help with a pushy food taker. Alternatively, hop onto my Patreon page, Patreon.com/DoggyU and check out some of the videos I have over there. I also offer private video review and am happy to help you that way. It sounds like your pup just needs help learning how to best interact with you around food. Happy training!
