Last year I felt I was drowning in plants and I just reevaluated everything. I gave away 84 of 92 plants. I felt so amazing after! In the moment of choosing which ones would go was very hard and difficult. Once the plant was gone, I felt relief. Now I’ve rebuilt to 23 plants, all that I love.

I have done that too, but from 40 down to about 15-20, and I have missed none of the plants that I have parted with. It was worth it and I am left with a more manageable amount.

Back when I first started collecting plants in 2017, I had almost 80. Over the last couple of years I have gotten rid of more than half and I am so much happier with the amount I have left, about 30. I am now able to enjoy each plant so much more now. Most of them are now displayed on their own which lets me appreciate each one individually. Having gone through this, I am way more careful and thoughtful about the plants I bring home. Great video!

I have a corner of my apartment that I put plants I'm detaching from. I take it out of my main space to see how I feel without it, makes it easier to take the next step in either composting it, giving it away for free, or putting it outside to sink or swim. Plants have taught me so much about putting myself first, even if I have invested a lot of time and energy into something.

I love the comments about how other people also got into houseplants and got a ton and then had to get rid of a bunch or some died. It was like that for me in the beginning too, I had over 70 at some point and, although I miss some of them sometimes, it was just impossible for me to keep that many. My house is just super old and get drafty and cold in the winter and I had a baby and just couldn’t make the time. So I’m sitting around 30 plants right now (and obviously I love propping them so it’s always fluctuating) but yeah I’m just a lot happier at this much more manageable number,

Some of these tropical's need so much work and money to maintain. My outlook on plants is this: Plants are my quiet calming happy place. Plants that require a unattractive tent to live under, 24 hour humidity going, and 95 % of your time fighting pests from are not a joy. I see video after video of people with these exotic plants they paid through the roof for and it has two leaves on it and one is melting. So then they take cuttings and try to sell off these cuttings. But unless you live in Asia no amount of work or investing will make this thing ever thrive. Plant happiness to me is overflowing pots. It can be from a spider plant to something vining but it will never be one of these plants that are like trying to keep a pet Bobcat in the living room. "Yes this is my exotic such and such I paid $5,000 for and it came with bugs. Yes it killed off 78% of the rest of my collection with a species I still cannot figure out what it is but look! It has a new leaf that hasn't unfurled in 5 months but I'm hopeful!" "Honey...Wasn't that your vacation money? Also...Um it's dead." "What??? Noooooooo it's fine look see!" ::leaf hits the floor::

This is why I'm happy to adopt sad (cheap rescues) or native plants. Natives are more likely to cope with my country's environment and cheap rescues if they survive I got a beautiful rewarding plant on a dime - if they don't it was only $1-$5 investment that wasn't such an expensive loss. I have many rescue plants from plant stores from the clearance/chuck out left to die trays that cost barely anything, have recovered and become my favourite plants.

Interesting video and topic. Something for everybody and I’m sure all of us have been at a point where we wonder if we should make a change or two in our approach to this hobby. For me it’s a hobby, plain and simple. It brings me peace and joy. I also enjoy the learning that comes with the plants. Having said all this, nothing beats the fun of bringing home a new plant baby.😊. Happy growing! 👌🪴🥰

Funnily enough my biggest problem/reason for getting rid of plants is I desperately wanted a wishlist plant and bought one that was quite small, and now I hate that I have a small version that isn't growing fast enough. So that is a habit I am trying to break.

Hi Becca, I really agree with you on when it's time to get rid of a plant, sometimes I will have one on the struggle bus and if it doesn't get off the bus then it gets dumped in the garbage and only when it gives me unhappy vibes. I have always had the buy 3 rule, I will buy a plant up to 3 times if I like it and usually by the second time I have figured out what I was doing wrong then it is okay with me. I have a lot of Calathea, and some of them struggled during the winter, but now they are coming back and looking so good, there was one that I liked but it didn't do so good so I just threw it in the garbage and I might get another one again soon. When you have a lot of plants it can take a lot of time to care for them, that is a struggle sometimes. I have to say that when I sneeze it is usually in threes, and I have always been that way, so that made me smile when you said what you said about sneezes. I always love your videos, you make me feel like I am not too foolish with my plant care and things that I do with a plant that is not doing so great and I thank you so much for that. I hope that you have a great weekend coming up, sending love and hugs, bye for now. 🤣😉💜

Every few months, I rearrange and reevaluate my plants. What doesn’t spark joy goes to friends or my husband’s office (if he wants it). My largest plants have been with me for over 10 years, so they do spark joy and have stayed with me through several purges.

I have some plants on the terrace. That included big flat pot with primroses. They were doing excellent in the sense growing a lot of leafs but only a couple of flowers that were basically disappearing in green leafs. And the whole pot just annoyed me. It was a perpetual feeling of annoyance when I saw it. So I dug out one and put in a small pot and threw away the remainder. -> feeling is much better.

This is such good timing. My Birds Nest fern is bad shape. I’ve had it for awhile but it started drooping, many of the leaves got crispy, and the middle is covered in…Dry brown fuzzy stuff? No bugs, and I’m going to check the roots today after work for rot. We had a couple weeks of +30 degree (Celsius) weather and over 90% humidity, and that’s when it started to decline. I took out the humidity tray and it seems to have stabilized, but it still looks bad. I was thinking about what I would do whether or not I found root rot, and this video is really helpful. Thank you!!!!

I'm getting ready to deal with my monstera borsigiana. I've cut it back before but now it's like five feet tall and gangly and kind of unattractive. I feel kind of guilty chopping it up since I've had it for four years or so, but i could use all that space for something a bit more interesting. I'm sure I could give it away, probably be easier than trying to give away a bunch of cuttings, and I already kept one really nice cutting last year. I also have ranodm props that I don't really care about, but i usually pass those on to coworkers.

I recently moved from a north/south house to an east/west house, and I have to say I much prefer having western exposure than south. Especially in the summer I noticed that my previous south windows had virtually no direct light coming in with the sun so high in the sky, but the west facing gets direct light from early afternoon all the way until sunset. I love it!

I think it's just a pissy plant, so I'm going to put it on the curb and literally just buy another one in hopes that I'll get a healthier one. So frustrating; I've always wanted one and it's just been a nightmare to love something that doesn't love life. Genuinely I really think it's this specific plant and not the variety as a whole
