How did I get moisture overload you ask?! Well.... I got really busy one day and left deep conditioner in my for about 29 hours if not more know it was wrong. The moment I rinsed my hair, knew i'd messed up instantly. Don't be a LAILA! Take heed 😫😘
Alot of black women don't know but air drying can also contribute to moisture overloading. Keeping water on fine hair more than one hour and thick hair more than two (average) starts to weigh down the hair by causing the cuticles to swell and encourages breakage, splitting/tearing and the hair may end up looking like heat damage really . This includes walking up and down in the same towel or t-shirt for lengthy periods since these do have a maximum absorption it probably hit in the first hour and even leaving the house with wet wash and goes. Pre pooing actually doesn't do much for helping this since the oil itself can do the exact thing (but from the outside of the hair rather than inside)
Laila, I have been combating hygral fatigue hair for approximately a year now, and I totally know what you are going through. If there are any additional tips that you can share , please do.
You're so right about protein being the black sheep of the natural hair community. Everyone is suddenly afraid of protein when this is the basis of our hair strand. Sharing the hair truth as usual!
Girl, I have dryness overload! 😂 I'll probably take the advice you gave and do the opposite to moisturize my dry head. Lol your out fit is all the way cute. You look AMAZEBALLS as usual!
I'm so glad you discussed it because I'm noticing alot of black women aren't acknowledging moisture overload. Water overload(hair not completely dry within two hours), deep conditioning over 8, protein treatment over two hours, wetting hair regularly for styles and even leaving the house with wet hair for styles such as wash and go can be the reason natural hair is shedding excessively , breaking/tearing and may be the reason your hair is fragile, thinning or looking like heat damage. I wish you mentioned that oils can cause the same issues by weighing u down the hair but rather from the outside so pre pooing actually should always be followed by a medium to heavy power clarifying shampoo within an hour
MRSKINKY1 Girl do your research please before you come at me. There are scientific reports and articles on it which include kinky hair. Some hair is of course stronger so yours may be fine but others suffer
Cleora Aleise I never once said blow dry or use heat. But you can actually blow dry your hair on cool setting, use micro fibre towels and scrunch the water out (ensuring to change it after the first hour), sit near a fan, use a safe low level of heat occasionally or simply ensure you remove most of the water from your hair so the drying time is shorter. Recently i read using regular or micro fibre towels/t-shirts make no different on coarse hair but that really depends on what you think. Clearly some hair is strong enough for the effects of over hydration not to show but it contributes to why hair may be fragile, shedding or breaking
Jayare yup, I know. I typically use a microfiber towel or a t shirt if I don't have a clean MF towel. Sometimes I use my blow dryer on cool. Everything you're saying is nothing new to me. If you want to explain something, explain what you meant by "water overload (hair not completely dry in 2 hrs)" Most natural's hair takes quit a while to completely dry especially if it's a wash and go.
Reading the comments and thinking about the information in the book (I've read it a few years ago)...I forgot how confusing natural hair can be...😣I think the book is a really good recomendation to get solid guidelines and build a good regimen. Thanks for that!
Literally am going through this right now. There is not enough about protein overload on the natural hair community. It took me a while to realize why my hair was behaving this way... I thought I broke it lol
Hi. Could you please tell what you did in your routine that may have caused the moisture overload and what you will do in the future once your balance is intact. The routines that you have posted look great to me. I really love your vids and look forward to your posts always. Remain blessed.
Hi Laila!♥️ I hvnt seen your motivational videos up here in a while 😣 I hope you make some! I've started my journey, myself. I talk on much from FAILURE to DOUBT, and VALUE, etc. You inspired me.♥️
I think I have moisture overload because my hair wasn't dry after 3 days (in braids for a braidout). This never happened before so now ill be more mindful about doing protein treatments. I'm doing one this weekend
I used to get moisture overload all the time when I first went natural. now I use a deep conditioner with protein and moisture every 5-7 days and my hair is thriving I also found babassu oil really helps strengthen my hair
This was one of your most informative video and I am happy that you made it. I leaned a lot from it. Looking forward to more as always from you the ' black hair guru' ;)
Aphogee two step treatment formula has changed. I was so unhappy with the new formulation. Now I use hemp protein powder with yogurt and kefir. This works better for me and the results were faster. TFS.
Zameka Tanga I figured she meant breakage. Most times people mean breakage and not shedding. Had a disagreement with a woman in an online natural hair forum because she said her hair would "come out" when she combed it. I told her it should we shed hair daily she went nuts on me *sigh*
Laila I'm having an SOS moment. PLEASE HELP! Initially when I first went natural I remember it to be coarse and thick (so I thought), however, I noticed some changes when I straightened it last year. It's now fine and thick(well I still have my volume when the strands are together, however, individually it's very thin and noticeable when I do my twist). It's been 8 months since the straightener. Starting to accept it being fine by stopping the usage of combing (ive embrace finger detangle). What else can I do to get my thick hair back? I miss the thickness in my twist.
I know this video is old and you will probably never see this but I'm going to ask anyway. Can you do a video tutorial on how you do your head wraps and where you got them?
I've been suffering form moisture overload for a couple of months. I've tired light proteins weekly and aphogee 2 step protein treatments and it doesn't seem to be working my hair is continuing to break off. What do I do? Is time to cut my hair?
Thanks, Im pretty knowledgeable about hair care as this is my third time to waist length; however, recently I've been getting splits Im off to download the book. Thanks!
I don’t know if you’ll still answer questions on this video, but what do you suggest when your hair is highly protein sensitive. My hair is high density, low porosity, andddd very very fine. I find when I use anything with protein my hair just snaps. My mom even loss a lot of hair using a conditioner that was protein based. Should I just skip it all together?
Hawa Ballay I use Nexxus emergencee Or Aloxxi Polymedic I wash once then apply the protein treatment. Then I follow with a moisturizing shampoo and deep moisturizing conditioner.
Hi Laila, could you suggest some reasonably priced moisturising conditioners please? I find that most conditioners on the market have protein in them. I'm currently using creme of nature argan oil shampoo and conditioner which I love but I'm not sure if I should be using it weekly because it is a light protein one. I sometimes alternate with tgin honey miracle mask which I think is moisture based, but would like a cheaper alternative. Love your videos btw! x
Akos Dee Any beauty supply store or Sally Beauty, if you're from the states. It's usually in a vial-type of packaging. I've seen a brand that has it in a packet...kind of like a protein poo. However, the vial is the real deal. Should range around $1.99- $2 max. Anything more is just outrageous.
Sorry, I really don't. However, a few of Laila's videos lists items of where she bought from. I recall her doing shout outs a handful of times. Matter of fact, I think she said it in her recent video with the hair clips and the beads. I believe she said the name of a store of where she purchased the beads.
