One of my dogs is really expressive with his various vocalisations. He has two very distinct barks we call the deep bark his "big boy bark" and the yipping "Chico bark". For such a small dog (Jack-Shih T) his voice is unbelievably loud and his greatest weapon ! I trained one of my dogs (who used to get caught in "barking loops") to be less barky by helping him to relax out of those moments. I repeatedly got accuse of "reinforcing the barking", yet the barking got less and less and less, he's actually a pretty quiet dog after all until he starts singing (brass instruments seem to set him off). I like alert barking and just shaped it to be not obnoxious. My front door just has a sign "no need to knock, my dogs know you're here". Sometimes dogs just need a good bark. I'm a drummer so I like making lots of noise too. I can relate. Great advice as always guys and I've used all three and got my own dogs barking under control. Context is EVERYTHING. Thank you for explaining it so clearly.

For alert barking inside, I "thank" my dog and then lead him away from the site of the barking to the kitchen to get a reward from the fridge. Leading him away accomplishes two things - it changes the environment and it puts time between the barking and the reward to avoid a bark/reward behavior chain that could increase barking. (In fact, I will often rummage in the fridge to be sure enough time has passed.) Over time, thank you will suffice to acknowledge my dog has done his job (warn me) and stop any subsequent barking ... reinforced with a more occasional reward.

One of my dogs likes to tell me stories, he doesn't do it other times but he tells interesting stories with different types of barks and whining. It's super cute!

Fab! Going to try 'Speak'. Tried everything else and more! My 1 yr old Smooth Collie has suddenly decided to bark at all the new, non city noises outside since lockdown! Running around the house like a loon, warning the noise and us! Half the time, with her super sonic collie ears, we don't even hear what she's barking at and she seems to know that, so shouts even more! Will keep you updated xx Thank You xxx

Very interesting, I've never had a dog that barks excessively. But still found this useful and interesting. My current dog is my silent ninja, on the few occasions he has barked it's time to take notice and investigate.

Excellent! Your way of communicating the information was brilliant! ONE question and happens a lot, how do you stop a dog from barking in a car?! Thank you and thank you for the video, loved it! Jan

My dogs bark at any noise there hear from outside our house. Neighbours, dogs, the noise of the bins...anything. I think its an excitement bark, they love to sprint to the boundary of our garden and chase whatever is walking pasted. They gets lots of mental stimulation so its not boredom for us. I will try and teach them speak and quiet but they are sighthounds so it might be a challenge as aside from barking at things that move they are generally quiet dogs.

What’s the reason for not adding a hand signal for quiet too? Would it be a problem?

lol my husky doesnt bark unless on command, my adopted one does bark tho, but not through excitement as that usually that ends in a 'woo'. her barking is generally because someone opened the gate or another dog going by, they both play fight loud but are generally quiet otherwise.

Our border terrier barks , I want to describe it as aggressively, at us to play with him. Which means to start walking away so he can grab a toy and run after us bumping our leg until we turn and chase him to get the toy. I put him in a time out in another room. I feel he needs to have a break from the situation. I also think just getting up and turning my back to him is an answer. My husband puts a pillow in front of his face. Are thes good answers to the problem or what would you suggest?

Wow soo insightful, however I have 3yr old Yorkshire terrier who keeps barking at the TV, sometimes when there is another animal on the TV and sometimes randomly at the TV. What does this mean

It could mean a few different things but if you start with the tips in this video you’ll be able to track if it works or not

What do you think of Jan Fennell's Amichien bonding technique to solving behaviour issues? this is something I have been using with my dog and has worked great so far.
@SoCS
@SoCS 3 года назад
The science would suggest that the theory is fundamentally flawed however if it’s working for you and you’re not using pain or intimidation then more power to you

@@SoCS Thank you very much for the quick reply, i really appreciate that. Just to point out Im no expert in this field just an average pet owner wanting to improve my dogs understanding of the world and his quality of life. I was just interested, as i noticed some similarities to your step 3 (teaching your dog to speak) with the Amichien bonding method. I was under the impression from the video that you was only teaching your dog to speak so you could then teach a command to be quite. The Amichien bonding technique has the same core principle, teaching your dog a command to be quite but without teaching them to speak first. Do you think teaching them to talk first has more benefits than not? and also For my benefit could you please explain the science which flaws the Amichien bonding method because in the long term i want to be doing right by my dog (which i suppose is whatever works, as long as its friendly and pain free). Thank you.

It’s been a long time since I’ve followed Jan’s work however the Amichen bonding method is based along the principles of a linear pack hierarchy, first introduced by Dr. David Mech who later did a Uturn on his initial studies after noting the flaws. His work was based on Wolves but the experimental design was what caused him to note observations that he later agreed to be a result of the environment that the study was carried out in. Is it worth teaching a speak before a quiet? Yes I believe so but the old adage that stimulus control will be the end of your barking problems is probably a bit of a stretch without the other parts we put forward in this video. As I say, how techniques are packaged isn’t too much of a problem for me as long as it doesn’t negatively impact yourself or your dogs life.

@@SoCS Thank you very much, I will have a look into DR David Mech's work to try and gain a better understanding. I really appreciate the information, quick replies and time you have given me to answer my questions. I will take it all on board.

Sounds like humans are the ones who need the help! Dogs know what they are communicating, we just need to listen to them!
