If you love knitting sweaters as much as I do, consider watching my other videos in this playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLKZMoghcMYzER2q1TR4rsUbUtXH_wMxL9. Also, links to items discussed in this video can be found in the description of the video. Thanks for watching and please consider subscribing if you haven't already :-)
I would love to see all your sweaters, no need to pick your favourites 😁. It’s my favourite kind of video to watch. I like the hoodie sweater and the striped raglan from another video. I have only knit four sweaters so I am not too experienced. My favourite was the ramble jumper by Irene Lin. I really enjoyed the whole process including the yarn I choose.
Hi Caleb, I just finished my 4th montrealer hoodie! Two months ago I wanted to knit a sweater again since a very very long time without knitting, and found this one through one of your videos. Immediately fell for it. I love it so much! I made one for myself, and then one for each of my 3 kids. And speaking about gender and knitting patterns/clothing: the montrealer is for everyone, my daughter and I love it as much as my sons. Thank you for making these videos, especially about everything sweater related.
Love this video!!! I learned all these sweater patterns that I didn't know of. Just hoped it was longer with more favorites? Haha My fave is Sunday sweater and Ranunculus so far but i think they look too feminine for you... I love how you switched colors and added stripes to make jumpers more colorful and interesting! :D
Wow, Caleb, you make me want to knit a sweater. I love the hoodie sweater that you made. I do like the other 3 also. I am teaching myself how to knit. I am knitting a shawl at the moment. I am planning on just knitting next year, putting my crocheting on the back burner. I am truly looking forward to practicing knitting items and not being scare. Thanks for showing your sweaters.
I'm so happy you liked the video and found it inspiring! I am a big shawl knitter too... I need to share more about that! Shawls are such great projects... but I am sure you are fully capable of knitting a sweater. It's so much easier than it seems as long as you take the time to swatch first and make sure you gauge is right! I hope you enjoy your knitting adventures and I can't wait to hear more about what you're making!
Thank you so much for the video 😊. I love the hoodie, will make it for my husband, thank you for the inspiration. Looking forward to see your future videos. Have a nice day 😊
I usually knit sweaters for myself or my pugs (may they r.i.p), but seeing this video of your favourite sweaters makes me want to start knitting for my adult sons. Thanks for this inspiration!
Omg, Caleb! Thanks so much for the shout out! I also love my Leelanau sweater - in my dreams I want one in every color. I love your criteria for "fave" patterns - so smart! 💙
Thanks for the sweater inspiration! And I love that dream... a Leelanau in every color would be AMAZING! Now, we just need more time to knit them all! Haha.
A toss up between a colour-work sweater or a Celtic cabled sweater. Wish me luck.lol. At the end of the day…it’s just yarn and always a learning process. So no stress.. ..just fun!
@@DrowninginYarn my sister made an Ankers sweater for my son. It is gorgeous, and worked up so fast. Between us, my sister and i have probably made six or seven different sweaters and cardigans from her patterns at this point, and all of them have been a joy to knit. That being said, we use her danish patterns, and i dont know if her translations are as good as the originals, but i have never heard of any problems. 😊
I don’t have a favorite knit sweater. Yet. I’m a beginner knitter. I’m literally working on my second project of all time currently. I love little videos like this cause they give me a good idea as to what to look forward to if I ever decide to tackle a sweater, so thank you! So far, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t mind a montrealer once I’m more practiced. Thanks for sharing your list! I’d be curious to know the others in the like.
Video idea: best patterns for first time doing cables, lace, fair isle, etc? I'm a beginner and loved your video on best first sweater patterns! Just finishing the second sleeve on my first sweater (chose flax by tin can knits) and looking for some ideas on how to learn more techniques once I'm done with my first sweater!
I would love to see your favorites regardless of complexity! I've finally reached the advanced stage of being a knitter and I'm looking for things that will challenge me(: I just finished The Weekender in two weeks and have the new Oakland tee cast on, with plans to quickly whip up another cropped sweater in a week or so (my boyfriend is taking me on a fancy city trip and how could I not! We'll actually be in your neck of the woods!!). I started knitting with the No Frills sweater, a great beginner raglan. Thanks so much for this great video! (:
Oh yeah, the hoodie is definitely my fav in your 3. I’ll have to give it a try, but I’d use 8 ply (I think that is DK to you) because it’s not cold enough here very often to wear chunkier knits. I have only ever completed three jumpers, and one of those was a baby one. My fav of the three is a super-chunky mohair & wool jumper which was knitted on needles like telegraph poles. It was started and finished within a week. It has some cabling and a fairly high neck. I hardly ever wear it… just on astronomy nights a few times a year, but it was regularly worn when I was living in Milwaukee one winter (2013-14).
@@DrowninginYarn I am using WYS The Croft Shetland Tweed in colour Lunna, which is a marled grey, so it's not showing the texture of the pattern as much but is lovely and soft to work with 😊
All three of these patterns are great! And a big "yes" to reworking the Otte design and making it your own -- and inspiring others to do the same! (My top three sweater patterns would be Riddari, Føyka, and Alasuq Polar.)
Caleb, I really enjoy your videos, both the survey type videos, like this one with your 3 favorite sweaters, and more detailed videos. I see you have videos with specific tips for techniques, stitches/cast-ons, and even a sweater video for a beginner or “adventurous” beginner knitter, like me. I’m pretty good at following patterns but I plan on tackling my first sweater with your video(s). Have only watched it quickly up to now, but once I get the yarn, I’m going to work on my very 1st sweater! I live In the land of cactus & desert creatures, where we have only a couple weeks of “sweater weather” (a little before & after 12/21 each year), but I’m going to knit a sweater anyway. If I can’t wear it, It’ll knit a matching hat and donate it (there are several donation opportunities out there). I’ll let you know when it’s done - but I’m not fast, so probably not for our 2-4 week “winter” this year. Who knows, maybe we’ll get snow someday! I like your teaching style and look forward to working on something with new skills with you. Keep teaching! Thanks.
Thank you for these beautiful pattern suggestions; all 3 have made it to the never-ending list of things to knit! By the way, the cute little strawberry in the background made me smile 😊
I have only made one pattern but have made it five times and given many away! It’s a raglan pattern from Davina at Sheep and Stitch. I’d love to try some of these too!
I am currently knitting the Breckin pattern from Knit Picks in their Dapper pattern book. It's a henley sweater, which I've never knit before. But I love how henleys look on me, so I'm excited to finish!
These sweaters are great! I see why you chose them. My favorite sweater pattern that I’ve knit over and over is called Perry. It’s a cardigan and only once have I knit it with the lace bottom edge. I learned that I hate lace. So now I knit it with regular ribbing. Sometimes patch pockets, sometimes inset pockets. A great pattern is good to find! Great video-thank you!
Im pretty new to knitting. Did a few pie of socks and just started my first try on a sweater. I'm following the flax light pattern because it's mostly pretty warm where I live and I want something I can wear for more than a couple of weeks a year. I love the three patterns you showed here, especially the hoodie. I might give it a try for the next project!
A flax light sound perfect for a warmer climate! I think you would really enjoy the hoodie. You could always do it in a wool/cotton blend and I think you'd be happy with your fabric while still ending up with a garment that might be better I a less cold climate.
Thanks for the pattern ideas! I liked making the SoSu Hoodie shawl cardigan so much I made another one! Then I tried a Tee which I like Really liking top down patterns which I had never done before For some reason hoodies appeal to this Grandma!! 1
Great sweaters. You definitely have a preferred color palette - those rich earthy colors. I have only knit one sweater so far and am currently searching for my next pattern. I am trying to decide between a casual v neck or a color work sweater while I finish up my current project. (Stephen West’s shawlography which has been a wild ride for this basic knitter😃) I love the color work on the Otte Sweater but unfortunately the style is not one that would work for me. There are so many beautiful color work sweaters out there to choose from. It’s a conundrum.
We're kinda in the same boat! I'm currently deciding on my first sweater and I'm also working on shawlography 🤯. I'm pretty far behind and as a knitting novice I'm thoroughly impressed by what I'm learning.
I have definitely found the colors that I enjoy and stuck to them. Haha. I vote for a casual v neck for your next one... staple pieces like that are so versatile and you can mix and match them with so many different things to achieve a lot of different looks with one garment. But you can't go wrong with color work either :-)
Josie, if you can do shawlography you can do a sweater. In addition to the beginner sweaters that Caleb recommends in his previous video, the vanilla sweater is an easy top down raglan sweater.
I love these three sweaters and intend to check the out and put them on my ToDo list for this coming year. My 3 favorites that I want to knit for me this year are Top down Cardigans with Shawl collar, necklines with large pockets on the front panels. Am truly loving your videos, please keep it up, I’ll be watching as long as I’m still here ;-) !!!👩🏻🦰
I am new to your channel, and I think your sweater work is absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing these patterns. I have not tackled a sweater yet, but you have inspired me to consider giving it a try.
I'm currently working on The Rift sweater by Jared Flood. Love the added details but it's a challenge because of my knitting level. I frogged it back to the waist line and am starting over. I like Mr. Floods patterns. I will conquer it. Lol.
My current favorite sweater is the Daytripper Cardigan - very approachable first steeked, and colourwork, pattern. Especially if you knit it out of very affordable Lettlopi and Plutloppi yarns. (I've knit two so far and plan to knit more for myself and as gifts...)
Lovely patterns and colors! I just finished Metamorphic for my husband, which was an easy to follow pattern and fits him well. I started the color transition higher than the pattern suggested and I like how it turned out. It was also a great way to use up some leftover yarn. Enjoying your videos!
I prefer cardigans for myself. I did Andrea Mowry's Doug Cardi and found it to be fun and relaxing even though it's striped. Stephen West's Bubble Cardigan is also fun once you get the pattern down.
Your my hero do u have a bulky men’s cardigan style coat sweater heavy gauge yarn? I made two 40 yrs ago for my brothers with two twisted cables down the front would love to make that for my son I can’t find anything like it on utube
Caleb can you recommend a DK weight top down sweater? I'm just knitting my 1st; the raglan by Brokklyn Tweed, but I really feel that the worsted weight is going to be too warm for me. Any ideas? Thanks for your great videos!!!!
I've only ever made one sweater and it took 20 years. Life got in the way. So now I want to knit one for me - a short sleeved summer weight one and I have a couple of patterns saved on Ravelry to choose from after I finish my holiday knitting. I'm not a fan of raglan though - as I'm short and a little petite and they tend to bunch up, so I'm looking at set in sleeves. As a person who also sews a bit, a set in sleeve is not scary. What scares me is trying to make a hat on a circular needle with too long of a connector. DPNs in a 5 are on their way.
So, I’ve not quite made it yet, but The Last Unicorn is a sweater in my near future to knit for my friends 6 year old. It’s by Bad Wolf Girl and it’s the cutest. She’s got many fun yoke patterns to work with.
Hey I just recently subscribed to your channel. I dont crochet but I do use looms. I have a question. Do you stretch out the yarn when you make a project? Do you wet it? It will be very helpful if you answer these questions. I enjoy your videos so far.
How interesting to know what you see as “favorite” sweater! 😀 I learned how to knit when I was 7 yo… first it was for my teddy bear, then scarf for me, then I knitted my first big item - pullover for my mom (she was verrrrry proud!) … now I knit for everyone but I never knitted any sweater for my son 🤔 simply do not know what he would like 😣 When he was a toddler I used all my yarn leftovers for him, he liked colorful sweaters, but now… for his daughter or amigurumi …
@@DrowninginYarn yes! Few times to redo starting over from the beginning … and then I will finally like it 🤣😂 I hate to do calculations and even if I force myself to do it “right” and knit small sample pattern… I will change my mind while knitting 🙄
Hi Caleb! I love your channel! I was wondering if you had a sweater or cardigan pattern recommendation for me. I have been knitting for a couple years now and I suppose I am a beginner + haha. I haven't really done any patterns that are difficult or require too much thought, but I am looking for something that is a little more challenging than your basic knit/purl stitch patterns but is also not terribly intimidating. Do you have any recommendations?
Hi Caleb, That Montrealer sweater looks terrific. I’m about to start my first sweater (again), after the first one I tried had confusing instructions. Waiting for interchangeable circulars from KnitPicks to arrive. Thank you for these videos. I love your style!
All great options!✨ Loved the colour pallette too, any kind of dark blue will always work imo. Recently I've been working on Just sweater by L'oro unico (on ravelry), a different construction to what I'm used to but is an enjoyable journey. I'd rec it if you want a seamless but not raglan type of sweater
Oh, no! I already have enough wips and future sweater projects, and now you make me want to put some more sweaters on queue! hahaha Actually, my first full size sweater was a pattern by Bergère de France (10 Pull raglan col rond - M2342), which i love, but i didn't plan for the shrinking of cotton yarn and i don't wear it anymore, so i was planning on making another one...
Love that Otte and as a female body with more narrow shoulders and I get wider heading south. Not familiar with that pattern. Does it go the other way?
In your June video about what experienced knitters do, you showed a color blocked sweater at your LYS. Can you send the info on that? I’d like to try that pattern-
I've been knitting for a little while. Haven't made my first sweater yet. Picked out the pattern and bought the yarn. Just Haven't cast on yet. I'm also into vintage things and have been buying vintage pattern books from eBay. Have you ever thought of purchasing vintage patterns instead of using just modern patterns?
I've been really wanting to give the Nelson Pullover by Irina Anikeeva a go. It would be my first sweater but i am not sure if i can afford a sweater quantity of yarn that i would like to wear...
Are you comfortable holding yarn double (or maybe triple depending on what you need to achieve gauge)? If so, you could check out Holst Garn on cones… one or two cones of Supersoft would likely be enough and would be lovely. Also, I haven’t used it but Valley Yarns from Webs are highly recommended by a friend of mine and they come in all kinds of lovely fibers with a discount when you buy certain amounts.
Can you please explain why it's so hard to find Men's cardigan shawl neck patterns for worsted weight or lighter yarns..? My husband is a 56 chest and it's more cost effective to buy the yarn and make him the sweater he wants than pay $200 + for store bought one..
