Watch 3 really fun before and after furniture makeovers, a fun Joann's craft supplies haul, AND check out my bedroom renovation!
It doesn't have to break your budget to decorate your home that way you love it. Today's projects are few different styles like cottage, traditional, and modern farmhouse.
If you would like to learn more about how you can donate furniture to young adults aging out of foster care in your area, please reach out to your local foster care agencies and let them know what you'd like to do to help. Remember, they are understaffed and over worked so it may take some time to hear back, but don't give up. Thank you for having a giving heart!

I love all you do what would you do if you got a pretty well worn but still stable Brandt vintage piece of furniture because I don’t know if I should just sell it to somebody well obviously I’m going to because I have no idea what I’m doing and I don’t want to ruin an antique... just hoping maybe you had some insight

When I was a little kid and wanted to help my mom paint furniture, she'd give me a jar of water and a paintbrush. I really enjoyed "painting" my own piece of furniture while she painted another. Fond memories I'll always cherish and get a little chuckle about too. I love Howard's products!

Ok so I just burst into tears. I was also a foster child and I know you fix up your furniture for foster kids. What made me cry was what you said. I know you were talking about furniture, but I felt you were talking about my life and what it took for me to become a finally healthy adult. “ When you have a trash to treasure piece like this you have to take it for what it is and appreciate it or what’s left of it so I’m just going to make it look pretty and usable again instead of trying to make it perfect. You just have to appreciate it for what’s left of it.” When I see what you do with each piece of furniture I feel like it’s the path of my life, from trash to treasure.
@DesertDIY
@DesertDIY 3 года назад
Awwwww! Wow! It's funny how little things in life can have such a big meaning. I can definitely see how that would be meaningful for someone learning to love themselves after a hard life. I am glad that you are able to appreciate your imperfections. When I think back on my childhood I try not to remember the bad. I just remember it as a "whole" instead of remembering the details. As a "whole" it made me strong and appreciative of everything I have now. That's all I need to know. We are all the product of a million different experiences and if I were a piece of furniture I'd definitely be a wobbly/chippy table with good bones (and curvy legs haha!)

Lavender, cinnamon, peppermint and cedar are all essential oils said to deter scorpions. These can be diluted with a carrier oil (or smaller amounts of water) and sprayed along scorpion problem areas and entry points-such as baseboards, windowsills, doorways, and around the perimeter of your home. In Ecuador I used dried lavender in boxes on my window sills and essential oil spray in my doorways.

I love the magnolia transfers. They’re my favourite. When sealing a dark paint I always add a little of the dark paint to the sealer and I never get streaks. Something to try maybe? I love how you are teaching your husband to nail the boards on. I’m glad we don’t have scorpions here. I live in western Canada and the most I have in my house on occasion are ants, beetles and the odd mouse. We are similar to Arizona this past week in that it’s very hot here. Unusually so. Today we hit the highest temperature ever recorded any where in Canada. It was 47.7C or 118F. We are not used to this kind of heat and it’s supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. Because we rarely get really warm most houses don’t have air conditioning here my place included. I’m melting I think.

Here's a tip on how to clean brushes. Before you dip the brush into the paint, spray cooking oil (like PAM) or dip brush into some cooking oil (doesn't matter what brand). The oil will coat the bristles just enough so the paint will not dry onto the bristles. When you go to clean your brush, clean as you normally would and you'll find the cleaning time is cut in half.

When you said one of the tables had a wavy top, I remembered another DIYer with a similar issue. It has been a while since I saw his video, but I am pretty sure this was his solution. With a spray bottle and water he wet the area that had the problem, then he took a damp cloth and put it over the area. Using a hot iron, he slowly went over the area drying the cloth. I think he had to redo one section that was really warped. Something about the water got into the wood fibers causing them to swell, then when the heat of the iron dried them they stayed enlarged. This filled in the “valleys” on the surface. I hope this is right. I would definitely practice on a scrap piece of wood first.

Your projects turned out beautifully. I have a little 3 legged table just like that. It was my mother's. The next time you have rust on your paint can lid and rim, strain it. Get an old collander( not a tea strainer...you'll be hatin' life, lol), and strain it. I actually bought a collander from Dollar Tree, just for that purpose. As an extra measure, you could use a piece of cheese cloth over the top of the can, held in place by a rubber band. This may sound like a lot of trouble, but you can do it in less time than it took me to type this, lol. I am very frugal...can you tell? 🙂👍

Corey, if you are ever coming to Tucson, I’m a hairstyle (30+yrs!). I’d LOVE to cut your hair. 😁

I might have to take you up on that some day. My hair is very coarse and requires tons of blending by hand. The texture sheers don't work well for blending on me either. It always ends up looking very choppy and jagged.

Have you always home schooled?
@DesertDIY
@DesertDIY 3 года назад
No. I started "homeschool" 2 years ago because my oldest child was having severe anxiety in public school and wasn't learning fast enough to keep up with her peers. My middle child also had some issues with violent students in her class as well and those students would be continuing on with her every year so I decided to bring them home and they have thrived. We do use an online school curriculum but I am their teacher. I LOVE it. I'm learning so much right along with them. I did go to college for elementary education and early childhood education but stopped right before student teaching and never went back to finish my degree. I love the freedom homeschooling allows for my girls to speed up or slow down as needed and we have been able to go so much more in depth in subjects like social studies and history. I could go on and on.

When a screw isn’t biting into the wood, just back it out and put a bit of toothpick and glue in the hole before re-screwing it. Solid. You do great work. Keep on.

I have used that trick too! But this was a different situation. It would bite until it was completely screwed in and then it would just start spinning. So weird
@bobwadsworth4799
@bobwadsworth4799 3 года назад
@@DesertDIY That is very weird. Yeah, my thought it would have been the nail that you took out but me thinks that there was also another screw or nail that had broken off in there before and that was what you were hitting.

Funny thing- I'm used to shorter videos, but at the end I looked at the length of this one and was amazed...I didn't even realize it was 30 mins, but I enjoyed every one of those minutes! It's was interesting seeing your room makeover and...now I want to stencil something! 😄

That actually makes me very happy to hear! It's a fine line between a long boring video or a hit exciting video! Thank you so much! Have fun stenciling!

@@DesertDIY This was NOT a long boring video! You don't do boring at all...ever! The white tables are very cottagey and beautiful with the stenciled application. And the damaged table looks very sophisticated with the black top. Tres chic! I was my dad's right hand when he was in the barn doing fun stuff. I had my chores, pulling nails out of boards and then straightening them, then taking the rusty ones and soaking them in oil to remove the rust. I learned about recycling from him. I too gained the love of crafting from him.

Wow! Those stencils are so pretty, they looked hand finished which is so much nicer than factory made 💖 your girls are so lucky! And always great to see your son helping out. It does build skills but even more it builds confidence and problem solving which are absolutely crucial in adulthood. Really great that Dixie Belle are involved directly now too ☺️ x

I am in love with that stencil! Beautiful little tables are perfectly interpretations of plant princess cottage. Really liked what you did with the third table. If you mix a little bit of the black paint into your topcoat, it will eliminate the streaky-ness of the top coat. Excited for your girls getting their new room makeover! Blessings for your week!😊
