Usually collecting a piece of heart is something to be celebrated, but occasionally it can feel like a huge disappointment. That's why in this video, we'll look at 3 of my least favorite examples throughout the Zelda franchise and explain what makes each of them so terrible.
And if you want my take on what the absolute WORST heart piece in the series is, check out my video on it here: • The WORST Heart Piece ...
But what do you think are some of the worst pieces of heart in Zelda? Let me know your picks down in the comments!

it's kinda funny how the most recent era of zelda has zero heart pieces.. yet it's the first time they would actually be really useful beginning to end, because no matter how many hearts you get, there are enemies that'll make you wish you had more. whereas most zeldas, you get 10 hearts, you're immortal.

For me, the piece of heart that didn't feel worth it was the Secret Shrine in Majora's Mask. Mainly because one thing, you can't go into some of the rooms until you already have enough hearts. To rematch the Garo Master, you need 16 hearts. To go through all of that to get enough hearts just for the final reward to be another piece of heart just felt like a ripoff to me.
@MrDrBoi
@MrDrBoi 9 дней назад
Wow I guess because I've always had a ton of hearts by the end of the game I never encountered that issue, but that's kind of crazy. There's no reason to put that kind of prerequisite in place considering you could fight the Garo Master with 3 hearts if you wanted to during the normal quest.

I'd bet the reason the Magic Armor isn't the final reward of the trading quest in Wind Waker is because the devs realized late into development how mundane and tedious the quest was. As well as downright stupidly confusing with trading items BACK TO THE SAME GUY... so potentially it was a somewhat last-minute decision to switch the rewards so that players weren't missing out on something somewhat important for failing this quest.
@MrDrBoi

I'd honestly believe that, and honestly think it was probably the right decision. Just sucks for idiots like me that try to get every heart piece lmao

Idk, I didn't think it was that bad. Trading back to the same guy shows you that it's a possibility. I usually keep three different tradable items and offer all three just to see what they'll give me for them and then try the thing I got in a trade just to see if it's different

Id like to give a special shoutout to the Beedle Heart Container in ST, mostly because you have to spend several IRL days to get it. For one, you get it by spending 5,000 Rupees at the shop, and until near the end of the game whrn you start accumulating Alchemy Stones and Regal Rings to sell to Linebeck for 2,500 apiece, you just don't have the funds to buy a Rare Treasure for 1,000 Rupees every time you see him, so you can only start accumulating points until near the end of the game. To make it worse, though, you can only buy one Rare Treasure for every real-life day, so that means the Heart Container will take probably at least three real days of opening the game just to buy a Rare Treasure at Beedle's Shop Ship. And just to make things that bit more annoying, once you spend 2000 Rupees, every item in the shop is sold for 10% off. Considering ST is a relatively short Zelda, I just dont understand why you need a time commitment to 100% it.
@MrDrBoi

I never played Spirit Tracks but that sounds so annoying. Almost like how you can only do three trades per day (in-game days though) in Wind Waker's trading sequence. Like what's the point of this arbitrary limiter lol?
@zachtwilightwindwaker596
@zachtwilightwindwaker596 8 дней назад
Just alter the calendar so you don't have to spend days. I think Phantom Hourglass is worse. Getting the Golden Train in Spirit Tracks, can be acquired by having lots of money and the right treasures which can be done by playing the game normally for the most part. However getting the golden ship parts in Phantom Hourglass can be a hassle since you have to hope that they'll show up in Beedle's ship and they usually don't and you also need enough money to get it (or use a freebie card if you are lucky enough to have one). I can go through an entire week without getting one.

This is very technical, but I'd argue that getting the Don Gero mask and getting the heart piece with the Don Gero mask are two separate quests, considering the mask has utility outside of the frog quest (trading it for the Fierce Deity Mask). I always just get the mask and don't bother with the heart piece. Technically speaking, you also need the Bow, Lens of Truth, Goron Mask and dozens of other items to finish the frog quest, but in other instances you wouldn't consider gathering pre-requisite items to be part of the sidequest itself.
@MrDrBoi
@MrDrBoi 8 дней назад
That's a fair point, though I'd argue those are all mandatory items vs the Don Gero mask which you have to go out of your way for, but I can definitely see that point of view.
@8Rincewind
@8Rincewind 8 дней назад
Does the Don Gero mask serve any other purpose that you haven't mentioned. I feel that we shouldn't treat the trade for Fierce Diety as a "use". How many people collect the Fierce Diety mask? Obviously 100% speed runners will, but I'm guessing that any% don't (unless they use glitches). Completionists would get every mask and do the trade in their "casual" games. But I don't think Zelda players are naturally completionists. Most gameplay footage I see has people missing 2-5 heart containers by the end of the game and often missing a number of bottles. My point being that most players don't view the masks as keys to unlock an awesome power that makes fighting the final boss easier. Instead the masks either have a general interesting use (like the bunny hood) or they're used as a key in one other quest. If there were lots of frog characters to talk to outside of this quest, then I would agree with your point. But if there aren't, then the mask is just the first key in this heart piece quest.
@kratal122
@kratal122 8 дней назад
On the one hand, you can say that Don Gero’s mask is identical to the Couple’s Mask in the sense that their only uses are getting a piece of heart from a side quest, then trading for the Fierce Deity’s Mask, but on the other hand, I don’t think that it’s controversial to say that just completing the Kafe/Anju quest to get the Couple’s Mask is almost rewarding enough on its own given the investment the player needs to put in and the story that the quest tells, where as the “quest” to get Don Gero’s Mask is just “break the pots in Goron Village until the rock sirloin pops out and then carry it to a guy.” As a completionist, I really enjoy doing the work to get the Couple’s Mask and the piece of heart I get from the mayor is a bonus, where as the work to get Don Gero’s Mask and its associated heart piece is just a means to an end.

I played Twilight Princess for the first time recently (GC version), and I couldn't help but burst into laughter hearing you go on about the rupee donations. Ever since the very early parts of the game, I had been constantly full on rupees, to the point that it became a constant annoyance for me to find chests, only for there to be rupees in them, and have to put them back. This remained a trend until the very end of the game, where thankfully at the later points, I could just put the Magic Armor on just to empty the chests. There was not a single point in the game where I needed to grind rupees. There's simply way too many the game throws at you just playing normally. So about the donation part, first, I did the Castle Town donation as soon as I got there (my friend told me to just give him rupees, and I just want to dump them so I did), gave the bugs I had up to that point to Agitha, got the 600 rupee wallet and got that heart piece straight away, then later on the 1k donation followed by the 2k donation in Kakariko (I was trying to figure out how to bring spring water to the Gorons and thought that was the way before realising the barrel delivery thing was right there), and I even deliberately stopped giving bugs to Agitha until near the end of the game when I had them all, AND went out of my way to give hundreds of rupees at a time to the bird in the forest during the duration of the playthrough just to try to keep my wallet empty, and I STILL had too many rupees to where those donations were no issue.

For Clock Town archery, were you playing Majora on N64? If not, the aiming is borked because no one properly maps the analog zones for the Z64 games. The main result is that you lose fine control because the zone between deadzone and full tilt is miniscule. Even Nintendo's own rereleases of MM and OoT are guilty of this. It's a known phenomenon in their speedrunning communities and some guy even sells adapters to combat this. Yeah, even with the trivial route to the goron, that part of the quest is a giant snoozefest. "What disqualifies the Savage Labrynth from this is the fact you're ACTIVELY engaged the whole time." *shows footage of a redead taking control away from you Funny. Rock Sirloin is always in the same pot. The "randomness" comes from losing track of which pot is which after they start spinning. EDIT: Just remembered, Dampé's is the worst because 1) he's so slow 2) reloading the area to speed up the dig rate nullifies the 15-dig guarantee and MOST IMPORTANTLY 3) you can actually permanently miss it if you dig it up and leave the area without grabbing it.

The rock sirloin actually isn't random. It's just that without an indication, you won't know which one it's in once the whole thing is spinning, but there's an easy way to narrow it down. First, before you start the chandelier spinning, Goron roll up and hit the one piece that you can reach; that's your marker. The rock sirloin is always next to that piece you just broke. I keep forgetting whether it's the one on the right or left, but it's the same one every time. :3

In my opinion the single worst heart piece in the entire series (which is technically a heart container but same thing) is the Masked Ship heart container from Phantom Hourglass purely due to the absolutely absurdly cryptic way to get it to appear. You have to play the game during very specific real life time periods. Between 10am to noon on weekends and 10pm to midnight on weekdays, according to the DS clock, Beedle's ship will be replaced by a masked ship where you can buy a heart container for 1500 rupees. The problem is that the game never tells you this or even that the masked ship is something that exists so if you never play the game during these real life time periods then you will never be able to get this heart container. Sure it's not hard to get once you know how to make it appear, and getting 1500 rupees is completely trivial in Phantom Hourglass. But if you don't know then it's basically impossible to find without a guide and even then certain guides don't even explain it properly and just say that the masked ship shows up randomly adding even more confusion to the whole thing. To give some personal experience, it took me several years to get this heart container even after 100%ing the rest of the game numerous times just because I never played the game during these specific times.

Hard disagree on the frog one. 1) Goht is like top 5 bosses in Zelda history, so fighting him again is always a treat. 2) Running back and forth to do shit is basically MM's whole schtick, and between goron rolling and song of soaring, navigation is pretty smooth. 3) You see the first frog when getting the stray fairy on your first cycle, two are (technically) mandatory minibosses that clearly cut to them turning back into frogs, only possibly tricky one is the Swamp, but you'd likely see it on the boat tour or when water skipping around. 4) The bow / ice arrows basically act as a "warp" as well, letting you bypass most of the dungeon and go straight back to the minibosses. 5) Frogs Like, literally was replaying it a few weeks ago, and spent about 5 minutes doing it on the side while waiting for my Sword to get upgraded (although I got the mask in a separate cycle, but I also fought both minibosses without a sword, so I feel like those cancel out :P)

Dunno, never really thought of the don Gero quest as that bad, it might feel as a small reward but unlike WW's trading sequence this one has more variety in its steps, getting the mask is a unique puzzle using goron link's power and the frogs themselves are pretty easy to find, 2 of them being minibosses makes them literally unskippable, the one in the swamp you also HAVE to pass by and at least hear it during the mandatory boat tour when heading to the deku palace and the final one is the only one you are not required to meet during the story, but it being in clock town pretty much guarantees you will find it while you run about The only issue is the fact that the 2nd miniboss frog requires you to be halfway into the 3rd temple making it pretty unlikely you find it on the same cycle as your first Goht fight, forcing you to defeat him again, but even then that fight is considered pretty fun and quick

I think I found the rock food in the first pot (before even considering the Don Gero quest), so that might be one reason I didn't dislike it.

It wouldn’t even be as bad if the wallet sizes were bigger in MM because of the fact that rupee chests reset each cycle. There’re two silver rupees in the Inn; albeit time sensitive, a silver rupee above the Town Archery Shop in East Clock Town, a silver rupee in the Bomber’s hideout that you can get with bombs or the Blast Mask, and 70 in South Clock Town with the Title Deed or hook shot: one red and one purple. That’s 470 free rupees in Clock Town in one cycle alone, never mind the Laundry Pool rupees, Curiosity Shop, and mini games. But when you need the largest wallet in the game to even hold that many at once it makes for an annoying amount of trips back to the bank to store the money you have so that you don’t lose money by overflowing your wallet.

hard disagree on your top pick here. Finding frogs is child's played compared to 1000 sword strokes without getting hit 3 times. One is just knowing where everything is and going and doing it, the other is a war of attrition that isn't remotely challenging, but can and will just decide to force you to restart regardless if you so much as position badly at the wrong moment. A successful run is about 15-20 minutes, but it can easily boil over into hours of time wasted tapping B and back flipping and hoping you don't slip in your attack cycles. And no I really don't think Orca's sparring heart piece should count as a "skill-based" heart piece because even if you do it flawlessly your first try, it's still 15-20 minutes of eroding your right thumb's nerves on the B button and there's not a thing interesting about doing it in the first place. My thoughts go out to anyone foolish enough to try Orca sparring with L-targeting set to Hold.

Ngl those Twilight heart pieces you have to pay Rupees for are some of the few things that actually make collecting high numbers of Rupees feel worth it for most of the game. It's only at the end of a 100% playthrough (I've done at least 4) that I feel like "what's the point?", and the only reason it doesn't happen way sooner is because of these 2 heart pieces using up my Rupees before I hit my wallet max. The worst Piece of Heart is still better than the best Shrine. I don't mind the skill mini-games or pieces. None of them have ever been too hard, and I enjoy getting just good enough to perfect them before moving on. Completely fine work/reward that serve as a great way to practice with a new item, and they also add a bit of flavor and life to the games. While I agree that a Piece of Heart isn't an appropriate reward for a trading quest (the mask or Magic Armor make a lot more sense), I still like the trading sequences, and that one letting you decorate the town with whatever you want is a nice addition. Honestly though, with all of these and every Piece of Heart I've collected, I don't see how more varied and interesting game content can possibly be a bad thing.

The Shooting Gallery in Majora’s Mask even as a mention? I don’t know man, when you see it also gives easy 200s afterwards, that doubles as some good progress towards getting the bank piece, even if you don’t immediately get the perfect score since even the 50s help to some degree. The pumpkin one wasn’t too bad, though that might be because I had the motion controls down good *enough* to do it. The Spring Water delivery I remember taking quite some time. All the small little movements and the bit of luck to stay away long enough…all after donating rupees in a game where donating them seems to be the entire theme for other pieces *in a game where it requires five pieces to make a heart.* I really felt some of the more annoying pieces could’ve either been reworked or removed. One thankful note now is that being hit by an enemy yourself causes you to only drop the barrel, meaning there’s a chance you can get some quick distance, slay the nearby enemies swiftly, and return to the delivery for the next wave. Like I said, luck can be crucial. The Wind Waker Trade Quest is another rupee waster in order to fully complete it with all designs. The one plus is that at least we know Gorons are at least very much alive even now. …oh. *That.* I’m only going to count what happens after acquiring the mask since getting it is honestly just a case of slightly slowing yourself down on your way to the temple after playing a basic timing and luck game that honestly shouldn’t take too long given you can mid-speed roll to maintain speed and magic fairly easily, doubly saving on time. The Great Bay Temple Frog is just…too much. If the other one was found in another area, like Termina Field in that one little pool, or just in Great Bay itself, it would be a lot more tolerable. Personally I think it’s a side effect of a general reduction in temples, and therefore fewer containers with more pieces to make up for it-think Twilight Princess’s issue but at least *somewhat* justified and it didn’t feel as unnecessarily extra.

To make the Don Gero heart piece even worse, it doesn't really unlock any cool or nifty feature when completed. At least with the Goron on the bridge, it's a means to an end to get the Magic Armor (and a super cheap shop), and the sale trading quest gives you the option to bling out Windfall Island and the Cabana if you so choose to waste your rupees on gold statues. But all the Don Gero quest completion does is let you hear the frog chorus when you get close to the pond... until you reset time.

@wolfzend5964
@wolfzend5964 14 часов назад
To be fair, I'd argue the frog choir isn't that bad. Granted it is a lot for a heart piece, but if you know where to go and are prepared, you can easily get it done in about a one in-game day. So if you make good use of your time, it is a decent way to kill time and collect other heart pieces that cycle, such as the graveyard pieces in Ikana Graveyard, The Scarecrow Heart Pieces, the Deku Scrub heart piece or a few things here and there. That being said, my personal worst Heart Piece in Majora Mask probably has to be the Moon Zora Heart Piece, where if you miss it, you have to reset the entire 3 day cycle to try again. I haven't done a full replay of Majoras Mask from start to finish, but I remember that one being the one that was the biggest inconvenience. Though I do race to complete Majora 3d on occasion, so there's that.

3. Hey, at least you can give the Goron as many Rupees as you want, have, or need to all at once. That man in Castle Town slows your donation to a crawl, as you have to give in quantities of 50, or 30 if you make the mistake of not choosing 50. YMMV on whether or not the donation interface makes getting that Piece of Heart worse than the fact you have to carry hot water across a field somewhat populated by enemies under an invisible time limit. 2. I guess about the only interesting thing about them is that they're the only Gorons you'll see in the game. I think all my worse ones than the three you covered fall under the Honorable Mention umbrella, and one was specifically cited. Saying the Don Gero heart is bad is a huge understatement. All the frogs can be found through normal game progression, except maybe the swamp one needing a tiny bit of exploring, and the mechanic of going through multiple days is part of the game itself. I don't think it deserves to be on this list. If anything, the level of randomness of chest game in OoT is more annoying up until you have access to the lens of truth. While they aren't heart pieces (or rather, spirit orbs/light of blessing), whoever designed the Highland Stable challenges in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom can go eat a rock. In Botw, you have to beat a stupid race track time just to get a saddle that isn't exactly bad, but feels like way too little for all the annoyance you have to go through. Likewise, in TotK, it's a sort of obstacle course where you can't let some cargo slip off or you have to restart, and the reward is just some points for the new Stable rewards system. And what makes it so annoying in both cases isn't just the amount of money you stand to lose, but the fact that you have to REPEAT. THE. DIALOGUE. BIT. BY. BIT. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. For the love of God, Nintendo, just give us a freaking RESTART option or something like that. Unless I'm unaware and it requires a chicken being sacrificed, I seriously cannot understand why they don't let us have such a simple solution; choose to restart a failed challenge. Thinking of just how much time would be saved actually agitates me more than thinking of all the rupees I've lost repeating the dang dialogue.

For #3, I naturally went the least enemies route, I think I got it in one go, and I didn't have all that difficulty getting the funds for the bridge by the time I got to that heart piece I already had nothing I really wanted up for purchase except for the Magic Armor (I did a 100% Normal Mode Run, which meant all 3 armors all PoH), and since this was in furthering my desires to get that armor anyway, and it nets you a SECOND Goron who also needs Hot Spring Water, which is a small price comparatively, and nets you two entrances to South Castle town and East Castle Town, which just felt better, it wasn't like I WANT the piece of heart, so much as, in the process of getting the way to Castle town open from the Kak side, and then repeating it with a very easily purchased hot spring water to give to the Southern Goron which just makes more on-foot/hoot/paw travel that much better... In all of TP I'd say it's either one in City in the Sky. Main Reason being that one is located, weirdly out of the way, like even when you think you're going out of the way the one that is even further out of the way, and the one indoors in that dungeon, similar issue, it's primarily the routes you have to take to back there if you only PARTIALLY fail in acquiring them... that's why I'd say Castle Town Goron is "meh" as I wanted an easily traversed bridge anyway, and yeah, it's honestly, it doesn't feel that bad unless you're making very repetitive choices at stores, which I rarely partook in as I preferred Fairies to full HP (or larger amounts of HP gain, which the best for "essentially free" is the Pumpkin soup from the 5th dungeon... yeah you always have to do the Snowboard minigame each time, but, outside of just snowboarding down there, you literally just can get as many 8-heart heals for free as you can carry in bottles each visit), so with Pumpkin Soup and Fairies, I just get free heals, I rarely need to restock up on other items, and I rarely use bomb arrows as well, I don't want to risk it unless it deals a substantial higher amount of damage than it normally would if the enemy in question is exceptionally weak to it.... so, yeah, I actually usually DO have the cash for the bridge once it's available.

So the short version is: I don't really register that as a piece of heart REWARD specifically, more than a transit system increase bonus, so, to me, the only part that's get it to the Goron is the piece of heart, and somehow I do remember the minimum amount of foes is encountered if you go NEAR the other bridge, but not too close, as if you sharply veer toward the bridge, the enemy isn't able to reach you before you leave their little "patrol" region, and they give up, and yeah, not much of an issue, did it one go. Of course it's that HD version with all the QoL stuff, but still, I did it pretty easily. AND getting the final castle town entrance fixed up is ALSO a nice bonus so you can leave to whichever hyrule field you wish. The one that actually gave me the most trouble was the Wife Rage at Snowpeak... and not for being bad, but just like, I'd get a weird vector and either veer into one of the worst walls, or off a cliff. I could get to where I'd win and hit the wall because my speed was too much coming off the last shortcut... I've only beaten her once, and it was the WORST Piece of Heart Minigame simply because it has worse controls than Mario Kart 64.

I've never failed the water delivery, and I've played it a bunch. That's not a flex, it's me agreeing with you that what's hard for one person isn't for another.

Swamp shooting gallery in MM is no much worse than the clock town one. With those controls it's nearly impossible to get that piece of heart.

I find the Thirsty Goron Quest funny since... I never actually had any Rupee issues at all throughout. Like I had enough to pay off the Kakariko Malo Mart after collecting the bugs necessary. If anything, there are *too many* Rupees. They really overcompensated for the Magic Armor. Really, none of the Heart Pieces of Twilight Princess were that bad to get. Probably one of the easiest games I've 100%ed. "Reuniting Maggie with her father"... Don't pretend like you had any part of that. Trying to steal the credit away from those hardworking pirates. If anything, Maggie's Father turns into an absolute jerk who cares *only* for money. It's actually not random getting the Rock Sirloin. It's in the same pot every time. As an aside, a lot of this stuff mostly progression stuff anyway, which can be done in a single Three Day Cycle if you're skilled enough. At most you'd just have to beat Goht a second time, but after that, beat a couple of frogs, talk to the choir and that's it. At most takes... half an in-game day? I dunno, this does sound more like a patience problem to me. The Number 2 seems genuinely awful, since even as a Wind Waker fan, I can't defend it.

Great video, I enjoyed it. At least, donating 2.000 rupees in TP over the course of the game for rewards is a way to spend money. It gives more value to rupees, which I appreciate. About the trading-sidequest in WW: Yeah, it's as confusing as you describe it. I remember trying and starting it blind, only to get stuck, so I had to turn to a guide. The process of hitting a training-partner a certain amount of times without getting hit yourself is more annoying for me, though. And it appears in WW and PH! At least the Goron-trading isn't stressful, and you can tackle it at your own pace. In MM, I personally find the Swamp Shooting Gallery Minigame the most obnoxious and annoying. I could never do it without save-states on an emulator! And even with that, it's just soooo frustrating!

I actually like the Don Gero quest. Mind you, I don't consider the piece of heart given there to be that important and consider the true reward to be able get the frog to do their little choral while seeing Link conducting it.

The absolute best heart pieces are the ones you find randomly whilst fishing. Also the best bottles.

I feel like the problems with the Lumpy Pumpkin harp minigame in Skyward Sword go beyond just "difficulty". I'm one of those seemingly rare people who had no issues with the motion controls in that game...with the exception being this. The wiimote just isn't up to the task here. It's incredibly frustrating knowing that you could easily follow the music if you controlled it with a joystick or something, but the game just doesn't keep up with your motions.

The town shooting gallery in MM was completely broken on Wii, as they messed with the stick calibration, making it borderline impossible to aim fast with precision. The fact that I spent hours on it there, but did it first try on 3DS with gyro controls attest to that.

hmmmm, the other 2 are worse than the frog heart piece, so I would not call it firmly number 2.

I am one of those people who missed the goron with the water barrel the same size as him. It definitely took a few tries to get there in the first place too. As soon as I saw Malo’s baby face on the barrel on this video, I felt it in my bones.

I will say that when playing majoras mask without guides and things like that it feels less task oriented and more like exploration and a call to memory in comparison to like the trade quest from windwaker.. except for the 3 day cycle.. that fucks it all up.

5000 rupee heart in majoras mask always seemed tedious to me, of course you could just keep putting rupees in the bank whenever you have max but if you're midway through another quest or a dungeon and you're already maxed your first thought isn't "lets put these rupees in the bank then come back" no it would be finish the dungeon then go to the bank later, leaving you with a lot of rupees you could've picked up. 5000 is no small number especially for majoras mask rupees and considering first playthroughs you may not even find out there's a reward for cashing in 5000 because from memory theres no reward for 1000 so unless without a guide not many people will bother putting that many rupees in the bank. Also just... weird and randomly placed

That heart piece is a bit buggy in both the N64 original and 3DS remake. In the original N64 game its possible to have him dig up the heart piece and if you don't grab it you'll never get another opportunity. The game internally checks the heart piece off as being obtained not when Link grabs the heart piece, but once the heart piece is dug out of the ground. If you leave the area without grabbing the heart piece however the heart piece despawns, but the heart piece remains checked off as being obtained. In the 3DS remake you have the exact opposite problem. The heart piece internally does not get checked off as being obtained at all, whether it is dug up or when Link grabs it. The result being you can have Dampe dig up the heart container an infinite number of times and completely max out your life meter just by respawning that one heart piece repeatedly.
