I just watched this video. I'm 48 years old and have been a Christian for 31 years. I found the things you shared quite helpful. I'm very aware and sensitive to the need of bridging the gap with the younger generations. I also have seen a greater awareness of mental health challenges, which is very refreshing. The deconstruction principle is also talked about. And the need for understanding the institutional failings of the church must be addressed. Thank you for bringing up these topics. Wow, Thanks Brady for sharing this imput. Just yesterday I was impressed that my audience needs to be Gen Z. With my own mental health problems as a millenial Im encouraged by Gen Z step up attitude. Plus. now I know why I don't wan tto be on my divices as muhc as my friends. Because we know what it was like without it. Amazing communciation shift we are experencing.

Digital Babylon is a picture-perfect description of our current 24/7 digital age. The deconstruction comments I think are really important. The gauge for "fake" with Gen Z is off the charts. So when they see our own institutions not living up to the proper standard or trying to hide the "skeletons" in the closet, it all works against their faith. The youth pastor at my church has always said that discipleship with younger people is a partnership between the church and the parents. There really has to be presence beyond Sunday to guide our young people (and people in general) through these unprecedented times. This is where the proper use of digital and analog tools can help us do that. Great video!

Nice one Brady. Really appreciate videos about engaging with Gen Z (we are a youth work charity after all). It’s great that culture is shifting where conversation around ‘mental health’ is more open. I do feel that this generation are sometimes labelled as ‘weak’ which I feel is unfair. Talking openly about your mental health and ask king for help isn’t weakness. Vulnerability is such a brave thing to do and should be celebrated.

As an Orthodox Christian, I would like to point out that he is speaking about small "o" orthodoxy.

Ad. are gen z more affected by mental health issues. Yes & no. I agree with what you said, there's clearly more awareness and articulation of these problem. But, at the same time, there's also much more family instability than in previous generations: so many divorces, or broken families, or parents who haven't even ever married each other to begin with. As a millennial, when I was in school, it was very uncommon for kids to have divorce situation or a single parent, these were exceptional situations. Today, I would estimate it's more than a half of home situations.

Brady, thank you for all of this. I greatly appreciate how you framed and approached #3 in recognizing that our institutions in the West do have failings, and it's important to address and work through those. What type of orthodoxy did your mother do with your family growing up that helped you remain grounded?

Hey Brady. New listener here. Thanks for your info and insights. One thing bothering me is how we Christians keep labeling and categorizing and compartmentalizing and analyzing each other. This is so similar to psychology with all its personality theories and mental definitions. Why do we keep doing this? Treating everyone with "specially made" gloves to handle each group according to so many custom-made requirements. Yes, there different ages - children, teens, young adults, adults, older adults, etc. Of course, there are different degrees of understanding and learning abilities. Whatever happened to plain, simple discipleship and Bible teaching? Why keep splitting ppl up into these specialized "gen" and "mill" groups? Bible and Christianity are really not this complicated. Please keep it simple. We the church need revival and turning back to simple faith in Jesus. Yes! I know I'll get jumped on for all I just said. So, have at it folks. Shut in with God in a secret place. There in the Spirit, behold His face. Thanks for your patience and time.

As an ex-Christian and atheist - things talked at eight minute was exactly what made me leave a religion. Still feel a lot of hate for religion in general - however listening to you gives me hope that one day such people will be in charge of these institutions. That will be a huge win for humanity. Truth bombs. I have been in church from the day I was born. My Dad has been a pastor for 4 decades. He was just as critical internally of the church as he was of culture being having been the first fruits of the Jesus people movement. Isn't it interesting also that when we are are critical of the body of Christ that we are usually being critical of another body or denomination? I watched the host of wretched rip on Bethel about all the ways they have stolen the youth away from other denominations. Did he talk about the toxic nature of those denominations, or their inability to let those young people take the helm to reach their peers where they are at? nope.

I think your point #1 and point #2 are actually related. Because GenZ has never had any great cause or struggle to devote themselves toward, their addiction to screens (and social media in particular) has caused all of this “anxiety” that we keep hearing so much about. The cutting, the panic attacks. Instead of fighting Nazis or ISIS, these young men grew up with nothing better to do than playing Grand Theft Auto or Madden. And the girls are constantly comparing themselves to filtered faces and bikini models twerking on Instagram and feeling that they fall short. Thus the rise in mental health issues… (By the way when “mental health” can mean anything and everything, it ceases to be useful as a term…but I digress.) I think you sell the wisdom of previous generations a little bit short when you say that GenZ is blessed with all of this “emotional intelligence” that we are lacking. (I have a GenZ son and daughter so I know a little bit of what I’m talking about, having seen this up close and personal in my own home.) Secondly, this “deconstruction” nonsense has a whole lot more to do with the amplification of negative and confused voices on the Internet than with any failings on the part of the body of Christ.

As an apostate, your first two points are helpful for anyone working with young people. My church literally split over Trump 5 years ago, so your third point doesn't stand up well to reality.

I don't think Gen Z are disproportionately more impacted by traumatic experiences but as you said they are more aware of their mental health. It's up to the church to learn how to connect in content with context. By the way, I consider myself a millennial 😂, 1982! Pew Research and the NPD Group have the dates like: Baby Boomers: 1946 - 1964 Generation X (TV Generation): 1965 - 1980 Millennials: 1981 - 1996 Generation Z: 1997 - 2012

Question #1. I don't think Gen Z is disproportionately affected by traumatic experiences. Every generation has traumatic experiences. If anything, I think Gen Z has not been taught the same way as previous generations in dealing with traumatic experiences. They may need more help with their mental health because they have not been prepared as well as previous generations to deal with how rough life really is, and some of them have been medicated (ADHD) so as not to be a nuisance to their parents and the education system. About this ceiling of relating and supporting to them. Shouldn't our students be taught to go to the Scriptures as the final authority for addressing their mental health issues. There are all kinds of traumatic experiences recorded there. Two Scriptures that allowed me to hold on to my faith in my teen years and throughout adulthood are: Let God be true and every man a liar. Jesus did not entrust himself to them. He did not need man's testimony about a man because He knew what was in the heart of man. Back in the 1980s when I began pastoring I used to preach that the reason our teens were leaving the Church was because they saw its hypocrisy, beginning at home with their parents, and extending beyond that to the Church itself. I remember watching Dave Roever on TBN in 1988 after Jimmy Swaggart was exposed. He was angry about the number of young people that were lost to the kingdom as a result of that debacle. Paul Crouch asked Dave if he could explain to the youth that Christians weren't perfect. Paul was visibly upset when Dave responded, "No, I can't. Young people are lost to the kingdom because of what Swaggart did."

Just to be the oddball here.... I don't believe Jesus focused on the systemic issues within the church in OT or NT as much as he did issues of the heart of the believer. Not sure it helps Gen Z or other generations to focus on systemic issues rather than their personal relationship with Christ, personal one on one responsibility each believer has. Walk the walk is still true today. It's what Jesus and Paul preached about. Jesus can withstand the "deconstruction movement" without a doubt. But as older generations will we withstand not giving Gen Z the truth? Just my thoughts....
