When we're beginner scuba divers, every piece of advice from advanced divers can be invaluable! In this video, Chris from ADRENO Scuba Diving Melbourne shares three things he wishes he knew before starting scuba diving.
1. There are two different kinds of diving regulators
The first piece of advice from ADRENO's Chris is that there are two distinct types of diving regulators available. The first kind of regulator is Yoke, and the second kind is Din. The difference lies in the first stage of the regulator, and how it attaches to the tank. The advantage of a din regulator (and is what Chris wish he knew before starting scuba!) is that you can actually attach it to most diving tanks on the market. Din regulators screw into the tank, making them a much more secure and safer fit than yoke regs, which clamp over the top. You can also add an attachment to din regs, turning them into a yoke reg!
2. There are two different styles of scuba diving BCDs (Buoyancy Control Devices)
There are 2 kinds of BCDs: jacket BCDs and rear-inflation BCDs.
A jacket BCD inflates completely around the back and front of the BCD. This makes it super easy to learn in, where you sit upright when surfaced. A disadvantage of a jacket style BCD is that when inflated under water, air can get into the front bits. The air always wants to find the highest point and this results in a 'fight' while rotating.
Rear inflation BCDs inflate only at the back of the BCD. This means that when underwater, you're not fighting the BCD and are always perfectly balanced horizontally. When surfaced, however, the rear inflation BCDs tend to tilt forward.
3. The great diving opportunities in Melbourne (and the world!)
In Melbourne, Chris has dived submarines, shipwrecks and a lot of swim-throughs out on the back beaches. Scuba diving can also take you to all of the corners of the world! Chris has recently dived in the Komodo Islands in Indonesia, which opened his eyes to the places scuba diving can take you, and what it has to offer when paired with travel.

I'm pretty sure you can use a Yoke/INT regulator with DIN tanks. All you need to do is screw the thread in the tank and you're good to go. The real advantage of a DIN regulator, is being able to use it with 300 bar tanks.
