Home Studios are full of compromises that we have to deal with to get the best sound.
Sometimes a door is inconveniently placed in a corner that you want to use for bass trapping.
Or the wall you’d ideally want to face with your setup has a huge window in it.
Or one side is made of concrete but the other is just flimsy drywall.
And on top of things there’s a big closet in it. Things are never perfect when picking a space to set up your studio.
But what if you had the option for the perfect space?
What would that even look like?
In my opinion, it comes down to 3 things that you should look out for.

Perfect timing for me, I'm planning a garden studio and trying to prepare dimensions, design and treatment for it. I've been using the Amroc software and what has surprised me is just how much a few centimetres change to the dimensions can make to the acoustics. 😎

hey i just did one of those, GET 5/8th drywall it is such a small price increase for much better walls. you get stronger safer quitter walls with lots of extra pure mass to help with damping to bass so well for my room with my speakers it added over 1500 pounds of mass well worth it for $1000CAD plus the improved fire rating lower my insurance rate, not a lot but $40 a year it will pay itself off in 25 years

Great video as always Jesco! Am I correct in that this mainly pertains to mixing? Could you do a video like this but with a focus on tracking, specifically tracking a loud drummer?

Hi. Thanks for posting this video... Very helpful. Just a quick question : is it a good idea to basically fill the angles ( wall to wall and wall to cieling ) in masonry instead of angled bass traps. I'm asking this because I'm preparing a hifi listening room, not a home studio which I guess follow the same acoustic principles. Thank you in advance

Good question, I'm planning a mixing/mastering room too. 😎

Man.... this channel has been such a major help in understanding and developing my plan. Question: When spacing panels off the wall, does the frame also need to be spaced from the wall? Or will 4" of insulation material in a 6"-deep frame that is mounted flush to the wall (putting a 2" air gap between the insulation material and the wall) work effectively?

i mean you want more of an air gap, but it’s not like it’s gonna ruin your treatment

I found out about your channel via booth junkies, but I subbed because of your Royksopp album in the background.

I cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us. Your videos are brilliant and have helped me avoid hundreds of stupid things I wanted to do. Thank you, thank you! I am still looking for information on how to deal with the asymmetry of the position of the speakers, where one is close to the wall (80cm) and the other is 4m away from the wall. Have you mentioned it somewhere where I could hear it?

First! I may have asked this before, apologies for repeating myself. I end up "taking the room out" and working 95% on headphones because my workspace (computer/interface/speakers) is itself very small; however, my 3' wide computer hutch faces essentially an 'infinite' space = an alcove that is open to my living space > my 'back wall' is at least 20 feet away, and the living space is roughly 60' x 20'... But since my speakers are so small (iLoud micros), I doubt that my space, even with lack of reflections, is as trustworthy as all that.

Great videos. Question - In my studio I'm recording voice/videos not editing so been the sound(my voice) is being projected away from me instead towards me(speakers) should I be concerned about treating in front of me and not behind me? thanks!

I see a copy of "The Inevitable End" up on your shelf. It's an amazing record - one of my favorites. Did you have anything to do with that? Did you mix it?

Sounds like glass block windows would be a good choice, especially if all you want is light.
