I like my gas water heater with it's pilot light, the pilot light contrary to claims does NOT "waste" gas, in fact, that little flame is enough to keep my 30 gallon tank at the set temperature alone, until I draw about one gallon of hot water out, then the main burner comes on, but the rest of the time the pilot keeps the water hot. If I had the electronic ignition BS they sell now, that main burner would be cyling on and off 24/7 wasting even MORE gas than they claim the little pilot does. I dont know why you worry about that SMALL amount of "parasitic" heat in a closed utility room, in the cold months you'll be happy to have any BTU's that come from anywhere! My water heater is in the basement, it's insulated, I don't feel the outside of the tank is at all hot

I remember seeing you install that tankless heater and thought you were crazy. Personally I think a heat pump water heater is the best way to go. They are generally better insulated than regular tank heaters, and heat water much much more efficiently than a resistance heater. Plus, during the summer, they actually act as an air conditioner. In my first house I installed one in my basement which was half garage. During the summer it kept the garage at a nice cool 70 degrees, while heating the water for pennies.

My tankless is built in that same "box" but different color, brand, and guts. Mine is also 199kbtu but rated at something just shy of 12gpm, stainless internals and no mini tank. I've had it for 6+ years and its been flawless with just flushes (vinegar). It's massively oversized for my home but should be able to run all hot water at once without issue in the house.

Careful with hot water loop with copper because at each 90 particles hit the wall with some force. Learned the hard way with in slab leak. Suggest looking at Upinor PEX with distributor Valve which feeds the outlet directly with minimal 90 angles.

In Europe (The Netherlands) we use two concentral metal pipes, cold input air through the outer pipe and hotter burned gasses through the inside pipe, you need only one hole through the roof and also some heat transfer to the input air. On the roof, the output pipe sticks out above the inlet for the input air to avoid circulation of burned gasses.

Way too complicated for my reality. We have great quality water from northern Kalifornia plus sewer, electric and natural gas. You may want to do very careful research with regard to an exterior wood burner. From what I have heard, these use many times the amount of wood over having an interior wood stove.

Nice system. We are getting gas on our road soon and we are getting ready to put in a system. We are finishing up a small duplex and will go with a heat exchanger tank for domestic hot water to have the capacity for both units. I’ll be putting in one of those circulating pumps to keep the water hot at both unit. I’m will be using 3/8” return going right back into the heat exchanger tank inlet. That’s a great price. We are going to heat our hydronic system to 130 F as our house is double stud foam filled walls. I have a friend that retired from a plumbing business he sold and he is going to do all my manifolds and setup.

I put in a tankless water heater water heater for my mother in the early 1980's. It used a metal exhaust pipe. Pilot blew out when the wind blew into the exhaust pipe. Didn't realize it until the heat exchanger froze. expensive to replace. Bought an automatic flue closer so it didn't happen again. I don't know if yours has something to prevent the cold from blowing in the exhaust but it sure is a worthwhile investment if it doesn't.

It's great to have two you back. The videos that you produce really show how you decided to do something both pros and cons and are very useful as a result. I'm kind of interested to know if you considered heating the water using the boiler of your infloor heating and how that compared to what you ended up with. Those boilers are more than 90% efficient and you only need a water tank. Then you have one heater, can bring the air in and exhaust it out. Sure you don't have a backup to gas but you could back it up with a propane or just use propane. Add about 5k or more of solar with as much battery backup to get you through as many days without sun as you would figure to need for your area. Maybe if you're producing videos regularly, the solar and batteries could come out of that income. Solar's really workable these days if you can overcome the upfront costs. I know you had trouble with the batteries previously but maybe now they are better and require less maintenance.

A few months ago my kids started taking their own showers and the electric bill spiked and mom and dad got some cold showers before we got them under control. I've thought about a hot water circulation pump too, but that seems like it would add to the thermal mass that the heater has to keep warm and would cause heat to leak into the walls of the house which would not be nice on those hot summer days. Maybe one that only runs in the morning and evening would be a good compromise.

I'm pretty sure the intake T fitting should be rotated 180° so the open side is pointed down. That way when it rains it doesn't run down into the heater.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Definitely looks like you put some thought into developing this system. One small question, why the blue tape on the logos? One small suggestion, had a coworker that policed his sons shower time. Took a suggestion I gave him, put a 120v solenoid valve on the hot water to the shower and added a mechanical bathroom heat lamp timer switch to it wall mounted with the light switches, no where near the shower. His only complaint was it ran more than 10min. 😂 certainly glad he wasn’t my dad. Wishing you and your family the best. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos in the future.
