A great city yes, but "European", no. I speak as an ex-YU diasporan in Britain. In my lifetime, every one of us nations living in the Communist bloc have at some stage been compartmentalised as a pariah. In Yugoslavia's case, it was the years after the breakup. Even Slovenia which saw just 10 days of fighting and Macedonia which before 2001 had none whatsoever were just kept off people's lists and the countries were being excluded from wider participation in all manner of affairs, governmental and social. Serbia was the last to recover. It's already the case that people's definition of Europe is completely malleable, elastic and ready to recoil at whim. Bottom line: how can it be argued that Belgrade represents Portugal or Iceland in a way that might exclude Lebanon or Mauritius? It simply doesn't. It is definitely an ex-YU city, and certainly defines the lands of the Dinaric Alps, the Panonian Plain and the Carpathian region; the lands between the Adriatic and the Black Sea, but outside of this geographical zone, Belgrade is just Belgrade the same way Stockholm is Stockholm and Damascus is Damascus!

In Serbia, 17 Roman emperors were born including the first Roman emperor (Trajan Decius). And in nowadays, you can notice cultural, historical and religious influence and all those legacy of the Romans in this area. Sirmium (today’s Sremska Mitrovica) was the city in Pannonia, an ancient province of the Roman Empire.

Fascinating, we read about the Roman emperors and we were so in awe. Thanks for sharing this!
@llcamaj82
@llcamaj82 3 года назад
Trajan Decius was born in that part of the Balkans but he was born before Serbians were there. He was born in the 1st century and Slavs migrated to that region around late 6th and early 7th century. So some of those emporers were born there but they are not of Serbian origin.

@@llcamaj82 Serbs were always on these parts. Just look at the Haplo group of DNA,and everithing is much clearer.
@llcamaj82
@llcamaj82 3 года назад
@@computeraudiophile9590 that definitely is not true. There was a rebaptism and force conversion of the Albanian Catholics there. Obviously before Albanians were called Albanian but they are the original inhabitants of that region not Serbians. When you are baptized they change your name. So a lot of Serbian DNA is all different. That is very proven. So what is the original Serbian language? It is still a form of Slavic. How come all Serbians only speak a Slavic language and don’t know of ever having another language? Cause Serbians always spoke a Slavic language. Serbians aren’t Dardanians or Illyrians. There is a lot of new research being done that find all this to be true. Serbians have a lot of culture but the Serbian government doesn’t tell the Serbian people their real and true history. There are other countries governments that do the same. I love history of every nation. I find all of it to be interesting.
@computeraudiophile9590
@computeraudiophile9590 3 года назад
@@llcamaj82 Albanians were brought from Chechenya,in 13th century. Language is similar to Chechen. They became nation in mid 19th century in Vienna convetion.As for the DNA,you'll find Celtic,Nordic(Scandinavian),South slavic,(Tribal,thats how they call us in French school books),Iliryan,(Turkish/Persian around 2%)etc. In Serbian language itself,4000 celtic words exists. Its well known that Celts were first in Europe,than Britain. It is much complicated for every European nation,to pin point who they truelly are. Did you know that all Germanic tribes were Slavic? The deeper you go back in history,the more complex it is.

That's actually what we love about New Orleans. Since it's one of the oldest cities and has a cajun culture, it doesn't look anything like the other cities we've been to. But we agree that most major cities often look like each other. But now that we've seen more of America, we realize just how different many cities can look when you get in the meat of it. We were just in a part of Jersey City that had one block that reminded us so much of England and another that reminded us of NOLA. It's crazy how architecture can tell the history of a place. Selena LOVES architecture because her dad worked in it, so we spend so much time admiring that part of a city.

Thank you so much for the nice 'shocking' things you encountered in Belgrade. But, please come again,I enjoy so much you sharing so many beautiful things about my country. My suggestion is you stay for,lets say, 2 weeks,and visit the tourist places in Eastern Serbia (the Golubac fortress,7000 year old archeological sites like Lepenski Vir,Viminacijum, the Djerdap gorge amd its beautiful viewpoints, Western Serbia (Zlatibor,Tara and Zlatar mountains and monasteries in their vicinity, Southern Serbia (the Devil's city which was the candidate for the Seven Wonders of the World) and so,so,so many other places and towns like Novi Sad,Nis etc. I cant wait your new videos. Blessings from Belgrade🙂

Belgrade is so much historical and architectural stronger than NY. NY captivates because of what represents but also the atmosphere and feeling of the city. It is hard to describe, but NYC is more of a feeling (to us) But yes Belgrade is incredibly beautiful and like nothing we have seen before

13:35 Thank you, you are so kind for learning those phrases in Serbian language. People here (and in most other south-eastern Europe's Balkan countries) are different when it comes to expectations of foreigners speaking our language. No one in their right mind would expect from a foreigner to speak Serbian (plus it's a hard language to pronounce with a complicated grammar etc.). Compared to some other larger European nations, we are a relatively small crowd (of only 7-8 millions). So, we are not like French, the Germans etc.

I'd say it's because of media that we speak more than one language, so I agree there with Maša. Besides Serbian, of course, I'm also fluent in English and German because I grew up watching a lot of cartoons on Super RTL (German Kids TV Station) and Cartoon Network (in English). Of course, later in life school expanded my language knowledge, but the media like music, TV shows, games, books and the Internet is what really gave my language skills that extra kick. :)

Just a thing for safety. Yes, Belgrade is a loooot safer than other European capitals. To give you an example, when I was in uni and went to parties, I would walk home across the city at 3AM as a girl and a bit tipsy and nothing would happen to me. Still, that was foolish of me, and I don't recommend it, yes, 30 times it was safe, but that 31st time you might stumble upon a bad person. There's little crime here, but that doesn't mean there's NO crime at all. Also, just keep your phone and wallet near you in crowded places. Don't be worried, relax when going out and about, but don't throw caution completely out the window is what I'm trying to say. :)
