Has he ever been World Champion? No.
Has he ever won Budapest? Don't think so.
Has he ever ranked World Number 1 at the end of a normal competition season? Nope.
Is he one of the best fencers of this generation? Without a doubt, yes.
This is a video on Szilágyi Áron of Hungary. Three Time Olympic Mens Individual Sabre Champion. Always a joy to watch. And a true fencer.
Szilagyi is like a yardstick for a fencer. Whenever someone says that a fencer is really good, I always think, 'yah but has he beaten Szilagyi?'.
Szilagyi truly understands the game, and his dedication to maintain his physicality accordingly results in a fencer that you cannot beat with brute strength or luck, and if you managed to do so once, you probably won't be able to the next time you meet him. There are no free wins when it comes to fencing Szilagyi.
As far as I am aware, besides (post 2015 Montreux) Hartung (winning 4 of 5 match-ups), there are no good match-ups against Szilagyi (the next closest would be Oh with a 60-40 win rate) and even then these matches are often close.
Finally, Szilagyi genuinely looks like he enjoys fencing. True, he complains a lot during his bouts, but I don't think he's ever looked like he was truly miserable when fencing. Watching 2012-2015 Szilagyi was a true joy. It was like he didn't care about the results and built his fencing on actions both he and the audience enjoyed. True, this way of fencing didn't always guarantee the gold (New York 2013 Final being the most memorable example), but I think this way of fencing was good for the game in general, and now that Szilagyi has won his third Olympic Gold and therefore has nothing to prove, I hope he goes back to fencing for enjoyment like he did back then.
