Number of things to understand about 'asian' pop music (J-pop, K-pop and geographical variations). Asian people do not have the cultural baggage that goes with different western-tradition pop genres, i.e. Jazz/HipHop/Rock/Metal/Soul/EDM etc. are all equally valid and available for stylistic mimicking. You'l often find half a dozen genres in a single track. It's this gleeful lack of self-conscious cultural baggage that makes the music appealing to jaded western ears. The basis chord progressions however are based on the standard 'show jazz' progressions of the post-war era, Count Bassie, Gershwin, etc. When I was in Japan twenty years ago ALL Japanese pop music was literally ONE classic chord progression in endless stylistic variations. Since then, the writers have developed and mined the Jazz era back catalogue and Jazz music theory for a dizzying array of complex progressions. To understand K/J-pop IT REALLY HELPS TO UNDERSTAND 'CLASSIC' JAZZ MUSIC THEORY. Particularly V of I, V of II and V of V passing modulations, tritone substitutions, planing, note leading through inversions, drop-2 etc. You are going to have a vary hard time just pecking away at different jazzy chords to get a decent progression. It's not Techno! (which I love)

Great vid! I'm always scared of changing the chord progressions so I'll try to push myself to do in it more often! Any tips on transitioning smoothy between different progressions? And what are your thoughts on key changes in Kpop?

Hey AZODi, I had a general question. What genres of music is most represented in KPOP? I think a problem I'd have at times is when it comes to sound designing for KPOP tunes, I'd use a lot of lo-fi outdated sounds/samples because of the music I listen to which makes it hard to replicate that modern KPOP feel. Would be real cool if we could get a quick rundown (if possible) about basic sound designing.
