Another way is with sidechain compression (or ducking) where the vocal signal is used to turn the music down automatically. Unfortunately, Resolve's sidechain capabilities leave a lot to be desired. I have a feature request on the Resolve forum for VST Sidechaining because there are some great plugins for multiband ducking that currently cannot be used in Resolve. This is one of the reasons why I render all audio out of Resolve and use Reaper for mixing.
Yes, I am that guy who just simply reduced the volume of the music clip. And I felt darned proud that I learned how to do even that in Resolve. 😂🤣 Ironically, I thought it was a good method because it saved me from being one of those video makers who has their background music annoyingly loud whether they have dialog or not. But starting now, thanks to Jay, I'm using the methods you have demonstrated here. Twelve months ago I didn't know what Fairlight was for- now Jay has me using it for improved audio! Huge thanks❗
Jason, I've used both the volume (sometimes with automated faders, sometimes with keyframes) and EQ techniques for a while now, but this stereo width tip will definitely be part of my mixing toolkit from now on. Many thanks!
Dialogue is a very small part of my video work which concentrates on nature experience. I tend to use EQ on every track to bring focus to the frequencies that work best for the situation. Quite often I use compression too, perhaps to soften louder moments (a very close bird call for example). And once or twice I have used side-chain to create space for dialogue (which I learnt from you). I am still very much a beginner with audio but it is becoming a much more important part of my work. Thanks for all your videos, cheers from New Zealand.
I've always been not very good at sensing audio. But you make me "This sh*t started to make sense." And even I can hear the differences from my dirt cheap crappy earphone. Thanks for the quality content...
I normally reduce sound behind dialogue like everyone else. I LOVE the spacial separation method best. I had my headphones on when watching your tutorial. I am going to use this method from now on. Thanks Jason
I’m about to start learning on how to edit audio for my project in davinci (had some basic XP in Audition). Could you give we some tips on a proper order of audio processing? There’re steps on my list, maybe you can adjust the order based on your experience. Steps: 1. noise reduction 2. De-reverb 3. Equalizer 4. Compression (3:1) 5. Normalization (-6 or -3 dB) 6. De-esser 7. Crossfades (where necessary)
I had just been lowering audio to -25db. In many cases I dispensed with music altogether because of the feeling it still clashed, unless it was very ambient stuff. I am excited to try these tips!
Hope these tips help! Music selection is big too. I always pick something w/ no singing in the song, too much competition with dialogue. Getting a balanced mix is important. 😁
You've said the exact reason why I haven't added music yet. Every time I try, I just lower the volume of the music channel, but it still competes too much. Will 100% be adding some spacial spread etc and getting music into my next video. Thanks!
I just was experimenting with adding Elder Scrolls Oblivion music to some hiking videos, definitely used these tips. I also added a "voice channel" effect to it and reduced the audio in the vocal range there as well, while boosting it in my voice tracks.
Thank you for this video. I've been trying to fix my audio for a while so this came at a very good time. I have tinnitus which sometimes interferes with my hearing and making it hard for me to figure out what's wrong with my audio. With some of the examples your videos it's hard for me to hear a difference between the edited and unedited audio. But with this the differences were so striking I had no problems hearing the difference. Thank you. I will be using some of these, especially your first tip, in my future videos.
You're welcome! I've got tinnitus too - too much riding 2-stroke motocross bikes as a kid with no ear protection 🤦♂️ Glad you could hear the differences. Good headphones help a lot too.
Jason..... awesome tip video. I am going to use this on a video that I am working on RIGHT NOW!!!!! Thanks. And yes.... I just did the reduce volume thing before!!
Thanks! The ducking’works great. If it doesn’t sound good for you, try adjusting the attack, hold and release. Those are the settings that will make it sound good as far as how it ducks the music and how the music returns to normal volume. Looking pressure/ratio. Will adjust how quiet the music gets when it ducks. Many times I use the auto ducking in combination with some of these tips. 😁👍
By far the best Davinci tutorial maker - please also help us out with other topics in DaVinci like Fusion or color grading bcs your videos seem to be on a different level of quality in those areas too
Great tip. When I first started in 2003 I did the EQ thingy cause it was logical but since I was self taught I doubted the method. Then 8 tried lowering the volume but was never sure. I am grateful to your channel as it confirms many things on what I did correct and incorrect. The spatial width is definitely something I am going to try. Thanks
Excellent, I think about issues with past projects and can now avoid them. What I would like to discover is an easy way to imbed an Audio Channel (graphic view of the wave form) into a project. I'd like to show a Snick-o-meter. (IE. did the ball hit the bat ) YOUR OUT👍
The line in the clip is a way for you to adjust the gain of the audio - it's the same as adjusting the volume slider in the inspector. Normalization sets the gain/volume of a clip based on the peaks or whatever method you choose to normalize by. Basically it's 2 different methods to set your audio levels.
Great tips that I wouldn't have thought of. Do you know a way to dynamically make the music volume decrease and increase throughout the video without cutting it into different clips?
Thanks! Yes, sounds like you want to do auto ducking for the music. You can use the new Ducker track effect if you have Resolve 19 and if you have a version before 19, you can check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dw88MGM9w0o.html
Try the tips in this video. I show some examples on how to manually duck it. How to ADD Background MUSIC in DaVinci Resolve 18 | 🔥 CRASH COURSE 🔥 | Techniques, Tips & Tricks! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0YbSS47ydEA.html
How dare you to suggest that I am just lowering the volume? Of course not! I use compressor and I make the music track listen to the audio track, as you taught me about 2 years ago. Good movie, I saved it.
Great video! May I ask what headphones you are using in this video? The ones in your description are Sony ones, and the ones in the video look different. Thank you!
Thanks! My Sony ones wore out after over 20 years. Now I use Beyerdynamic DT 770 pros. I also Use the Sennheiser HD 280 pros. Both are very good and don’t break the bank.
Great tipps - thanks. BUT :) Turning down the volume is easy over time with Keyframes. So for the Intro I want to have the music in it's full glory - and than it's very convenient just to drop down the volume - is there a possibility to animate the effect of the stereoseperation or the eq as well? Otherwise music for full throttle on a different track and music for dialogue on another track and fading between those tow could be a solution? Thanks - love your tutorials and kindness and your style in presenting your content. - keep on!
Thanks! Yes, keyframes are great and even better is to have Resolve auto duck the music for you. Both come in very handy. You can animate the separation effect. You'd use the automation tools to do it. I'll have some videos about automation out soon.
Yes! You can make an audio preset for your track in fairlight. I've got a video on it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ll_9tz8Q7cQ.html
Admittedly, I'm usually just setting the volume. Part of the reason for this is so I can bring it back up during longer gaps in the dialog; is there way to do something similar with the EQ and stereo effects ("fade" their impact in and out where needed)?
Wow woulda never found that! Been a struggle balancing music and talk for my YT Vids. Trying to determine how good the new Deliver Page Audio Normalization for RU-vid is working? I would have to do a "no adjustment to sound video" to determine I guess.
Glad video was helpful! I think the way you would work with the new normalization in the delivery page, is to make sure you set your project up for a given deliverable as far as the overall loudness is concerned. For example, if you’re delivering for RU-vid set it up for -14 LUFS and make sure the LUFS levels meet RU-vid standards. Then, if you wanted to change it for a different deliverable standard, that’s when I would use that normalization in the Deliver page. Otherwise, I would always make sure I edit my audio and get it where I want it to be before I deliver the project, which would basically mean I don’t need the normalization from the Deliver page. I think it’s only useful if you’re going from one deliverable requirement to another, and all of your audio is basically edited, and in a good spot to begin with. Normalizing audio really doesn’t help with things like compression and EQ, and overall enhancing the quality of your audio. It’s just bringing all your audio up to one given level, based on whatever preset you pick. For example, if you have a loud clap in your video, that loud clap part will be brought up to a certain level, but the rest your video still gonna be quiet. I hope this helps a little bit.
@@JasonYadlovski Ok that all makes sense. So I was doing my best already to get the sound nice and that struggle begins for me in OBS with Mic Filters and all and now these 3 videos I'm seeing from you on sound will get me to the next level. Thank You! I do love Davinci, started out from the beginning with Studio and the Speed Editor! That combo is the biggest bang for your buck on any type of software that exists and I'm thinking about all the Autodesk stuff and everything. I can't believe how low the cost is. And no subscription. It really sucked when things began moving to subscriptions. Thanks again!!!
Thank you for such a helpful video. My question is: I've always been of the understanding that you want to export your RU-vid videos in mono as a lot of people listen on one headphone. If I export in mono, will I lose the effect of what I've done if I follow your steps? Cheers!
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! There's no reason to export your videos for RU-vid in Mono. I'd always export in stereo. Unless you pan something right or left, you will be able to hear it in one headphone. For dialogue, it should be centered for the pan, typically. Unless you are trying to create something different in a scene, kind of how I did the dialogue in the recent StarWars sound design video I did.
Awesome tip but... on some audio tracks I don't have the spatial (Stereo Width) option. Does anyone know why? I have used what you said and it works great but again on some tracks that option is not available.
Awesome, glad you found the video about ducking. Absolutely you can use combinations of all these techniques. I do this often and it can work out really well. If you only need one technique, that works, but it’s nice to have more tools in the toolbelt for when you need them 😜
Thanks! Ah, the zoom - here s a breakdown: Ctrl (cmd on Mac) + Middle Mouse Wheel = Pan right/left on the timeline Alt (option on Mac) + Middle Mouse Wheel = Zoom in/out horizontally on Timeline Shift + Middle Mouse Wheel = Zoom In/Out Vertically on Timeline Ctrl + Alt (Cmd + Option on Mac) = Zoom just the waveforms vertically - I don't like this one cause I feel like it throws me off. 😜 Hope this helps!
@@JasonYadlovski One last question for today (well maybe) - Can you please point me to your best video for adding a subscribe/click button to the beginning of my timeline. Or end for that matter. I have seen a couple of yours before but didn't bookmark them. Just thinking of a sub button off to the side that clicks.
Most of the subscribe buttons that I use are either motion graphics from Motion, Array, or a text effect from Motion VFX. Both assets just drop in the timeline and are good to go. I can’t remember off the top of my head if I have a video showing how to create one from scratch. 🤔
Do changes made to a track (say Track 1, for example) apply to EVERY music clip on the track? Or can they be isolated to a single clip (I might want reverb on one clip but not all of them.)
It can be done either on the whole track or just a clip. Depends how you want to do it. For example, with reverb, if you add it in the mixer in Fairlight, it will apply to the entire track. If you want it only on 1 clip, open the effects library in either the edit page or Fairlight, find the reverb effect, drag and drop it onto the clip you want it applied to. So you can do either one or the other, or you can even do both if you'd like. Hope this helps!
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks, Jason, that helps considerably. I cannot imagine an adjustment for an entire track other than noise reduction or isolation or something like that. So odd they set it up that way. But you showed me the fixes, so thanks again.
why dont I have stereo width? using 19 Beta version. I paid for the studio but after is started my project. I cant change the file to the studio version as thats an older version
