The start to my guitar career was with your videos on (I think) a different channel. You explained the power chord shape in reference to Iron Man and Enter Sandman. And a whole bunch more videos. I haven't seen you on RU-vid since, but I recognized you right away. Thanks for all the help 👍

Though pretty much what I expected, these ARE some really good tips. :) * Raise mids. * Lower gain. * Either tilt the cabinet or put it at ear level (and not pointed towards the sound guy or audience).

I still remember and tell people how that guy, pioneer in the youtube game taught me guitar and how he would start with this laid back "What's up good people ?" line. Thanks. so. much from me and everyone you inspired to keep picking up their guitar. Thibault, from France,

Brother, I cannot believe, so before usualy I was keeping my mids 0-10 on 4 to and to much gain so I have followed your advise and bang, before I cannot ear my leads and was thinking its my volume, just exactly what you are saying, so my friend that he is bass player from another band he show up on my gig and he told me, "bro I don't know to much about electric guitar, but I think your problem is not volume seems to me EQ" so on the next day I started search on youtube lol and then i found your video. Thanks brother you change the way that I sound on the stage now everyone and my self can enjoy the lead guitar.

I do all of these methods. Great advice! And it works like a charm and has for years. There's a saying "God lives in the mid-range". Guitarists locally have asked me forever "how do you get your tone, and you use the same ol dual rectifier you always have?" .. "well, regular amp maintenance and pre-amp tube rolling depending on what you're looking for in terms of overall aggressiveness, back the gain WAY off, roll off the bottom end and the ice picky highs, and bring in your mids, if you need to boost, you can use a tube screamer or really any kind of overdrive pedal in front of the amp during solos. The boost idea is also good for jent guitar work, cause in these extreme metal situations you actually want less gain cause alot of times youre using these 7, 8 and 9 string guitars, more mids, less bass, and treble, maybe bring in some presence and then boost it a little.

Great tips, exspesualy on the gain, I've found from playing in bars over the years that what sounds good on stage, will be overly distorted to the audience. Sound naturally breaks up travels through the room. Best thing to happen to my playing was to get used to playing cleaner

"Exspesualy"... Seriously? Are you still in a bar, drunk? And yes, sound disperses. That's why to an audience that's farther away from the speakers, it should sound _less_ distorted. That's why through a mic, an amp sounds _more_ distorted, since it picks it up _directly_ from up close, meaning it didn't have much chance to disperse yet. Logic, yo. Science!

I wear ear plugs when I attend shows and cover them with a stocking hat like you are wearing so no one can see that I'm wearing them. lol. I played in a band and we all had combo amps with stands. It really does help you hear yourself playing. I had a Spark mini boost pedal for lead. It was neat because you could step on and hold the button down while you played lead and then just lift your foot when done. Didn't have to click the button off and on. Simple things can become tricky when you are playing live and on the spot!

Great tips. I would add the reason for turning guitar gain down is because gain saturation boosts the noise floor across all frequencies and creates non linear harmonics in the highs. This interfers with the high "space" especially and makes the entire mix muddy.

Also when finding your own sonic space in a live band situation instead of both guitarists playing Les Pauls or similar humbucker style guitars, have one guitarist play a humbucker guitar and the other one play a single coil guitar like a Strat or Telecaster.

Because of Metallica albums, I used to do this mid cut mistake on stage and that exactly what happened. Tonemeisters rebuked me to cut down my bass eq's and open up my mids and presence. which was very disturbing sound I hate to hear on my monitors. Later I switched to Slayer's settings which are The EQ is Sad face. That sound amazing, I did not intervene to Bass Player's frequencies, I became more articulate, I could express my pick up touch especially in downpicking sections.and chords became more rich sounding.

What about using pedas ike Heix, Pods or Ge 300 . You have the abiity to seect, your tubes, Your distortion then your amp and cab. They a have EQ. WHat do you focus on EQ'ing most? Do you leave all neffects in the middle then shape the amp only? So many EQs eads to a mess.
@rockongoodpeople
@rockongoodpeople 11 месяцев назад
HI and yes, the modelers have EQs built in and there are so many combinations and available effects and amp sims and cab Its - can be overwhelming for sure. My suggestion is get the sound that sounds best to your ears and then bring that to the rehearsal or live playing scenario and see how it cuts through - turning the gain down a tad may help and perhaps tweaking the overall EQ boosting the mids - remember that the guitar is more of a mid range instrument - that is the sonic space in a live mix where the guitar lives fo the most part. SO with the modelers they are more settings and parameters to mess with but once you dial it in you will have it nailed as those modelers are super consistent venue to venue night to night. So give bit of light in respect of settings for live gig I shall be beholden to you Thanks
@rockongoodpeople
@rockongoodpeople 2 года назад
Hi again - well your question depends on what sounds you are gong for - if you are running a distortion pedal or like you mentioned your guitar patch from a processor which has gain already then you probably want to run that through the clean channel of your amp. Why add more gain on top of the gain you have in the processor. Unless that gives you a desired sound that you like. There isn't any rules per se, just conventional wisdoms. Personally if you like a certain patch or pedal distortion or overdrive pedal then run that into the clean side of the amp if possible. If you rather like the sound of the gain in the amp or the amp distortion then use that and not the patch from your processor - choose which sounds you like best and dial them in, if you have the sounds you really like in your processor and they sound great and you have them all EQued and u r happy with them then run them through your amp and have a very transparent settings on your amp so u get the sounds mainly from the processor. It all depends on what u are looking for sound wise - so experiment. The mixer in the PA is more for overall band mix and getting the levels right between all the instruments and drums and vocals so you can have a well mixed and balanced sound and volume between all the players. You can make small adjustments in the overall EZQ if someone is spiking again just to balance out. Hope this makes sense and helps. Keep rocking and have a great day! -David Taub, Next Level Guitar Inc. & EGI

Hi and thank u for watching - its all a matter of balance in my opinion - balancing your tone with what sounds best with the band, getting your sound to cut through the mix, and getting your tone that inspires you the most and allows you to be creative and empowered. Adding some delay adds a bit of sustain - check out my other video on using delay for a killer lead tone. You dont have to back all the gain out - just try taking a little off perhaps. You can also run an overdrive pedal in front of your amp - that really can help with kicking the amp and driving it a little harder, tightens it up and removes the flub in some instances. So try those things - if u add a drive pedal in front of amp try it with the gain on the pedal low, but the level high - that is what u want. @rockongoodpeople
@rockongoodpeople 2 года назад
Hi and thank u for watching - really appreciated. A lot depends on your amp, pickups, and speakers for sure - but generally too much bass tends to muddy the guitar in the mix or starts to collide with the bass frequencies. But again, you have to season to taste based on the gear you are using and the mix with the other instruments in the band. Generally I have found that cutting back on the bass on the amp helps to bring the guitar out a bit - if you have a graphic eq on the amp or in a pedal format you can always add a touch of a certain bass freq back in - kind of what I do with my mesa boogie mark V live rig. With most of the mesa amps I played thru the bass to me sounds so much better when its really low. But again, season to ur personal preferences. Mid boost! That doesn't necessarily mean crank your mids. It could mean back off your treb n bass. Everybody consciously plays under one another so you can hear every nuance of every instrument and vocal run that sound out through your mains. A jazz mindset they play under each other. For soloing the band placed under you. If your sing the band plays slightly under you. Sounds counterintuitive it works every time with musicians who pay attention. Do not play with blinders on! - Peace

How do i setup clean rhythm patches, soft lead patches and crunchy rhythm patches as well as hi gain lead patches to be used seamlessly in a live setting on a multi effects processor i.e zoom g3xn. Also when it goes through the mixer do i need to adjust gain in the mixer too to get the proper sound out of pa systems? Bcoz most often my guitar gets absolutely buried when the whole band starts playing like keyboards with heavy synths, bass, vocals, drums.

Hi - thanks for watching and for ur support - really appreciated. While there is nothing wrong with two guitar players using the same gear in a band - however, I suggest trying to get somewhat different sounds so the frequencies dont line up so exact and it just sounds like one big guitar. One of you may consider buying a different amp. Or if u use the same amp try playing different voicings of the same chord so you both are not playing the exact same things. You want differentiation. Or buy a different overdrive or distortion pedal that will sound different. Give some of those a try and enjoy the journey. Enjoy and stay tuned - lots more content coming soon. Hi and thank u for watching and for ur kind words. As far as artists gear - it varies - some artists use the same or similar gear live as they use in the studio and others try different gear and amps and plugins in the studio to record. Remember when recording many artist double or triple up on their parts and pan them left and right to make the guitars sound huge - so it will sound different than live. Plus the producer often makes suggestions on sounds and tones and lining it up with the feel or vibe of the song. Main thing is to get tones that u love and ones that inspire you. All my stomp boxes lose any boost too. Might be a failing output transformer or low juice causes the transformer failure but I seem to have this problem on most of my tube amps. I resorted to using a volume pedal for nearly unlimited control but the rolled back sound loses grit. At least the leads cut through the mix. Last gig I didn't bring it and the sound guy kneecapped my best solo. Never again. I will be heard. Oh yes. I will.

Know your sound guy, spend time talking and listening. Show them respect. Learn from each other. All rooms and venues are different. You can have a $15k guitar and hand wired boutique amp and sound like you are playing a piece of cardboard through a crystal radio if you just plug in and do your own thing. They control what you ultimately sound like. Work with them to get the tone you want the audience to hear. Also know your gear and make sure it is reliable. No bigger waste of time than stopping a sound check cause something breaks and you are not prepared. Also make sure it is appropriate for the venue, don’t bring a half stack to a really small venue, you’ll spend all your time trying to get it sound how you like, and it never will. Just a couple things I’ve learned from playing live and making lots of mistakes along the way.
