3 TOPICS to sell as stock photos + videos | Stock photography in Washington, DC (vlog)

In this vlog, I take you along with me as I walk through Washington, D.C. and find subjects to take photos and videos of for stock photography platforms such as Shutterstock, Adobe Stock and Pond5. Almost all of these photos and videos are editorial content, which I would expect to be most useful for news outlets or people looking for documentary style content.
I apologize for the bad audio + video quality. I did not plan this video in advance and thus did not bring a microphone or light for my iPhone while I was shooting with my camera.
My gear:
My camera - Canon 5D Mark IV: amzn.to/2LTFOwT
Canon 16-35mm lens (awesome wide angle): amzn.to/2Jsstx4
Canon 70-200 zoom lens (great for events): amzn.to/2Jms9A5
Sigma 150-600mm telephoto lens (my go-to for wildlife): amzn.to/3Su8yPM
Canon 85mm 1.2 (my FAVORITE portrait lens): amzn.to/2kEuV5I
Canon 85mm 1.8 (a cheaper alternative): amzn.to/2LQMAnk
Canon 50mm 1.4 (second favorite portrait lens): amzn.to/2sAuKvN
The drone I use: amzn.to/49nZanF

I apologize for the bad audio/video quality - I used my phone to vlog while I was out, and I didn’t originally plan to make a video so I didn’t bring a mic or lighting. Hope you guys enjoyed it anyway! 😊

I'd love to see some videos on your editing workflow for stock platforms. Coming from shooting log or with a flat image profile, I'm never sure how far to push things when color grading.
@NicoleGlass

I could definitely do that, although I feel like my editing workflow is pretty boring. I don't do too much editing to stock videos, mostly just basic color corrections, stabilization and I'll sometimes slow 60fps clips down, depending on the content.

Good to have you back making videos. This is great - I would enjoy seeing more content like this. Most urban areas, and particularly major capital cities, offer a huge amount of potential stock content for anyone who is able to approach the challenge with some imagination and creativity. How about building on the idea with some videos where you explore certain neighbourhoods and areas and set yourself a challenge relating to shooting a certain amount or type/variety of content?

Hi Nicole, liked the informative video. FYI, due to the potential for people using a tripod to mount a weapon on it in D.C., the Park Service requires that you get a permit to use a tripod.

Maybe it depends where you’re photographing, but I’ve photographed all over the DC area near and inside the monuments with a tripod and have never been told anything by Park Service (or Capitol Police). They’ve definitely watched me, but they’ve never even approached me to tell me about any restrictions. I’ve seen plenty of other photographers using tripods too.

Hi Nicole. Do you ever get harassed when shooting imagery around political events or locations? I'm in Canada and am tempted to head into Toronto or Ottawa to shoot various shenanigans. BTW, your idea about shooting signs was darn good. When do you upload? How long should a video clip be in your experience? (I've only uploaded stock video. I watched a video of yours a while back when I think you said you were giving up on stock photos as there was no money in it.) Thanks for the video.
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 6 месяцев назад
Regarding your first question: only once in my life. There were 2 protests happening in DC, a MAGA Rally and a BLM protest. Someone threatened to destroy my camera if I took pictures. But other than that, nothing has ever happened - I'm usually pretty sensitive to what's going on and I try not to stand out too much. That means I'll sometimes use a small inconspicuous lens or even just my phone if I don't want to draw attention (like when I saw someone burn a car once.... that was intense). Video clips should be 5-60 seconds generally. I often upload 10-ish second clips.

It might make sense for you to switch to micro four thirds, for a lighter system that requires a tripod much less often. A used OM-D E-M1 Mark III, 12-40 and 40-140 F2.8 lenses. Arguably better for video than your DSLR. I would buy used, but of course you can buy new. The Lumix G9 Mark II is pretty spectacular too.

A warning to stock photographers that AI is using your photos and videos to train their algorithms. As the models improve at a rapid pace, traditional stock photography and video created by humans will be seriously impacted in a negative way by AI created imagery. Sorry to be negative with so many positive comments here, but this is just reality.
@NicoleGlass
@NicoleGlass 6 месяцев назад
I’m guessing that a lot of commercial-type imagery would be affected - sunsets, everyday objects, etc. Perhaps in the world of AI, the images/videos that will remain sellable would be editorial-style news content that show actual historical events that happened.
