When doing the Valsalva Maneuver my heart rate jumped from about mid 80s to low 90s and then very quickly went down to 60 and then 57. It went back up to mid 70s after about a minute. I can believe it went that low, I also felt very calm. Thank you so much!
A Doctor, when you walk in their office should always let you sit and rest for five minutes. If they’re asking you questions tell them to come back and give you time to calm down. I have the white coat syndrome. Every time I go to the doctors my blood pressure is high at home it’s fine.
I went into my doctor, and the day I went in I was already stressed out, and then they asked me about my life, and I had just lost my sister, so I was crying and upset, and then they took my blood pressure, and my blood pressure was up, so they put me on blood pressure medicine after they tortured me with questions. These doctors are very uneducated about blood pressure. When I was in my thirties I had just gotten into fight with my husband and I went into the doctor and my blood pressure was really high and the doctor said don't worry, you do not have high blood pressure, you're just very stressed out, are you okay??. I told him I just got in a fight with my husband. Then my blood pressure was completely normal after that, but this new doctor I got recently, immediately put me on a low dose of blood pressure. These doctors not knowing what they're doing is really putting stress on their patients.
I always tell me if they’re going to keep talking to me they’re not gonna take my blood pressure when they’re done talking let me know give me five minutes and then you can take my blood pressure. Sorry you have to go through that.
I just had my blood pressure taken yesterday and I pulled up my sleeve, it was 160 something over 90 something. The doctor came in and took it again and when I went to pull up my sleeve he said to leave it down because it creates a tourniquet effect and raises blood pressure, when he took it it was already down to 130 something over 80 something.
@@DrMitchRice I just tried it out. My diastolic value was 100, after pressing the aorta for 1 minute, it dropped to 84. Now, I'm gonna check the science behind it. _so cool_
Awesome doctor Mitch that's really good to know because this BP problem is a pain in the neck knowing some tricks to handle besides pills is very helpful thanks for the info keep up the good work
Same with my weight. It’s always three or four pounds heavier at the docs. 😂 Recently my BP was 140/75 and the nurse was not concerned. That was high for me. But I was getting ready for a medical procedure and she said it was fine. Mine is usually 115/68.
I am a big fan of breathing...lol...There have been 2 times in my life when being able to control my breathing saved my life... and yes, I was surprised how low I could bring my blood pressure doing it without really trying...
@DrMitchRice I want to know if it's true that you can actually reverse or get out of drinking high blood pressure medication as a maintenance? also, would you recommend that to someone who will be taking hormone replacement pills after a total hysterectomy? Thank you.
Thanks for the tips, doc! Tried it and my pulse went down right away! Haven't checked my blood pressure yet. How many times in a day this should be done, to reduce the pulse and blood pressure, if they can be reduced permanently.
@@madhurao9456 wrote, _"If it's not a permanent fix, what is the point in doing these?"_ It's an intervention. One might presume that someone interested in these techniques is also interested in their overall health. Modifying diet, increasing movement, and managing stress are all things that we can do along the path toward better health, but their desired outcome doesn't happen overnight. So, while one is 'on the path', these can be used to clip occasional rises in blood pressure. In particular, managing stress is a big part of the overall strategy. Doing these interventions throughout the day acts as a 'reset', which breaks the pattern of constantly elevated blood pressure. Think of it as a sort of training via repetition, to help your nervous system to relax _vs. being constantly stressed throughout each day)._
@@madhurao9456the point is, if you don't actually have high blood pressure, do this if it always reads high at the dr's office. Mine does this. It was fine on 24 hr monitoring, but always high in Dr's office.
Are these tips also safe to use if you had a heartattack before, and on top of that i suffer from COPDAlpha 1, 34% lung capacity left atm, i also suffer from anxiety attacks, so those can trigger hyperventilation, my saturation is usually 95%, when it goes higher, i know i can start hyperventilating triggering tachycardia. And than i can end up in a vicious cycle.
Holy Shit, the first trick lowered my blood pressure instantly from High to Normal range.....why nobody tells to do these simple things instead of making your body a walking pharmacy.🥵
I have htn, and can testify to certain behaviors that have lowered my pressure drastically. Sitting still, breathing in and out evenly for 3 minutes, clearing my mind, and going from 150/90 to 120/72 after practicing that.
This is exactly what I've found also. I can bring mine down from 140/90 to 122/78 in about 4 minutes by using this technique. Focusing on the breath and nothing else is the key for me. I can get overly agitated by thinking about politics, etc., which can immediately raise my blood pressure.
Like a pilots checklist before takeoff... No Doctors office BP checks home readings best No rush no white coat syndrome Use cuff machine not wrist ones Go to bathroom if needed Don't be cold No coffee before No pets around kids nearby Sit quietly 5 min Breath in 5 secs hold 5 Exhale 8 5x Think happy thoughts Keep cuff at heart level Sit up straight feet flat on the floor Discard 1st reading and wait 3 min repeat Do again and compare And as my former GP said "Stop taking your BP too often once a week enough or you'll drive it nuts" Lower stress, exercise, eat right, don't smoke all good too
I agree with 99% .. Apply all of these steps, but take your BP at 5 mins, 10 mins & 15 mins. Twice a day, for two weeks, morning & night. Then find your average and that will be your truest BP.
If you extend the exhale in the box breathing technique, it's even more effective, because when you exhale, your body secretes a chemical that slows your heart rate. So I breathe in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, then exhale for 12 seconds. This is what I do when I have panic attacks.
Taking my blood pressure automatically raised my worry level so I did some research. I read that emptying your bladder, and sitting relaxed, back in the chair with your feet flat on the ground makes a difference when taking your blood pressure, so I tried it. I was actually stunned by the difference it made. So that with the breathing gives me a more realistic reading.
I check my BP regularly like this. Sit totally upright, not slouched, in front of a table, measure your BP on your left arm, hold this arm in front of you using a pillow if necessary so that the cuff measure point is at the same height as your heart, give yourself min 5 minutes and ideally 10 minutes to fully relax, carry out some breathing exercises if you like, and only then take your BP measurement. Take measurements at the same time of day (or at multiple times) for a week, then determine the average from these. This will likely give you your most accurate BP level. Hope this helps. Note: not a doctor but have levels between pre-hypertension and stage 1 hypertension and otherwise live a healthy lifestyle.
As someone who has been on various (increasing) meds for hypertension for a little over 10 years - never has anyone suggested any of these easy tips to me. I've sat in my GPs chair many times with the Dr saying "it's a little high, just relax and breath" but that's it. Great stuff Dr. 👍🏅
If they keep giving more meds to control the bp go see a kidney specialist, I was on 6 meds , sent to kidney specialist, he gave me a med that attacked the cause, in my case the adrenal glands were causing the problem, know down to 3 meds and well controlled
@@JamesAnderson-mr2sg That's exactly where I am now mate. Have had the saline suppression test and a CT an am having an AVS Monday with the look to potentially either remove one of my glands or if both are overproducing then meds to control it.
Wanted to comment on cheryleverard488 comment. I have noticed that none of the nurses wait 5 minutes probably bc they are moving people through like cattle through a gate! But this is absolutely true. You must wait at least 5 minutes to check pressure. Thanks Cheryleverard for saying this.
Perhaps it would be a good thing to tell your viewers that temporary drops in blood pressure are NOT one’s true normal blood pressure. What you are telling viewers is how to “trick” your body into dropping its blood pressure. Yes all 3 of the “tricks” you demonstrate will drop one’s pressure “temporarily “ BUT check it again in an hour and it will be back into its “true”pressure. Lifestyle changes are the only true methods to achieve lower permanent blood pressure. Lose weight. Less salt.Exercise. Better eating habits. These are some of the sure fired ways to drop blood pressures.
I definitely have to start eating more potassium, I work out too, and used to have at least a couple bananas during my workout, especially playing the amount of basketball I do @@cfoster6804 , just small tweaks help, and have to be regularly active.
My doctors nurse resembled jLo and when she took my vitals my blood pressure was 160/110 and my HR 105. This was average even with medication. One appointment she was on vacation. My vitals were 127/70 65. The temp nurse was 60 years old and over weight. My doctor now takes my vitals. No meds everything good.
@@isobelpullen5870I faced same issue today in clinic . First it was 163/108 . They were shocked it is very high. After doing some physical exam before going home I sat in chair I followed some mudra ( apana vayuu mudra) n breathing technique for 3-4 minutes and doctor called me inside to recheck my bp it was 128/78
@DrMitchRice It's important but they keep dropping the "normal" levels. Long ago it was 140/90, them 130/80, now 120/80. Some countries even have higher levels that are deemed normal today. I suspect they keep lowering it to cast a wider net and get more people on pills. Next 0/0 (dead!) will be what they tell us to shoot for. Most people aren't going to have the same numbers they had at 17 when they're 40 or 50. There are a lot of people who are fine that they are putting on pills just because they don't have the exact number the medical cabal tells us they should have.
I love this. I have white coat hypertension which is always alarming when I have it taken. But then if a nurse or doctor jokes about enough, it drops to normal range.. or at least drops enough for them to be reassured. And also if they take it properly with a stethoscope rather than a machine, it's normal.. so I do wonder if those machine cuffs don't help. IDK. But now I'll try this also before getting it taken. And I'll invoke the unicorns, very helpful to know about them 😂😇
I agree! Those cuffs send me into a panic. I once had one ( Later found out it was malfunctioning but the nurse filling in that day didn't know) squeezing so hard that I was screaming.....and you don't want to know THOSE resulting numbers. I had my doctor take it again with his own 'gizmo" and the numbers were way lower. Hard to shake that memory...
@@DrMitchRice If you do this in the waiting room just before they call you in to take your BP, could the normal reading be a false positive? Also, should one tell the Doctor that these "tricks" were used before the BP was taken? Just curious.
Try the Shepard Reflex: vigorous back scratching lowers blood pressure. This hasn't been formally documented but we tried it in the operating room at work.
It's my understanding that the carotid sinus "thermostat" for normal blood pressure will "reset" to a higher blood pressure mark if the BP has been elevated for an extended period of time. Two questions: 1. If the BP resets at a higher mark, is this a bad/dangerous conditon? 2. If it's a bad/dangerous condition, HOW do you reset the carotid sinus back to normal? Great video btw! 👍
Dr Rice, thank you so much for teaching these techniques to lower blood pressure. My blood pressure was 134 and 77 and was feeling chest discomfort and tight. Then i did your exercises, it went down to 128 and 76 instantly. Then i repeated your exercises again and my bp went down again to 113 and 74 instantly and now my chest feel more relax. May i know do you have exercises for high pulse rate and also yoyo blood pressure, my blood pressure is sometimes very high or low or normal. How can i have normal blood pressure and pulse rate? Thanks again. So happy today i bump into your youtube channel.
My advice if yr pressure is very high go see a doctor very soon. Dont play around doing so can cause a stroke. Tips as these are fine to reduce pressure some. The same goes for taking vitamins or herbs. Either may or may not help some or do nothing.
I’ve heard carotid massage can be dangerous! I would never recommend the 1st two moves. Relaxing breathing is fine. Are you a medical doctor???? I’m an NP with 30 years experience
Wow! Tried all three started at 138/90. 1st did breathing square 133/85, then valsalva 128/80, then carotid massage 114/76. Impressive, but how long do such exercises maintain these lower pressures? In the evening I drink 2 (no more no less) glasses of red wine. It drops my pressure to 110/70 enjoyable relaxing and long lasting. Why is this never discussed. I told my doctor about and he laughed.
Heck, I believe you because I get the same results from drinking a glass of New Amsterdam Gin and orange juice mixed cocktail. I only drink it at night and it lowers my BP when nothing else will. I've gone from 185/100 to as low as 94/60 before in approximately one hour drinking it. There are no other all natural supplements that work for me when my BP spikes out of control. Guess I'm just different.
My BP is always higher at the Dr ‘s office than when I check it at home. I’m going to try these techniques next time. They did work when I tried them at home, so that’s promising.
In all this utube video that I am watching this dr is one of kind . Less lengthy talk , get to the point and talks about subject that video title says . And great technics
