3 US Marshals killed, 5 officers hurt in E CLT shooting 

Sounds like a police friendly fire incident. The police need to start questioning the other police. The US marshals tend to wear civilian clothes with a law-enforcement vest. Sounds like the local cops were not accustomed to working with US marshals and mistook them for the perpetrator during the heat of battle and murdered all three of them.

It was last stated, a woman and 17 yr old girl.

It sounds like the suspect came out and got shot, then in the mayhem nobody knew who was authority to a certainty so the authorities had confusion, wound up killing their own, plus I guess 17 yr old boy and adult women in there maybe also shooting, maybe not. The woman and 17 yr old don't sound like professional snipers either.

US marshals work with the local law-enforcement. It appears the local law-enforcement shot and killed the three US marshals. US marshals tend to wear civilian looking clothes and the local police probably mistook them for the suspect and murdered all three US marshals.
