Catherine Sews has a great tip for starting a seam to hide the tail. Start the seam a couple of stitches, raise the foot, pull the tail back through against the needles, and stitch a couple of inches and let the serger knife cut it off. It’s really good for an exposed seam at a hem or something where you don’t want so much bulk.

Instead of an embroidery needle, I use a double-eyed needle, since both ends are rounded. I often use a floss threader to get all four threads through the eye of the needle.

I use the gathering foot to gather ruffles and attach to hem of skirt all in one motion. I sew dresses each year for Dress a Girl Around the World and it makes it so easy. Your ideas were all good, especially for beginners on a serger. It’s quite intimidating at first.

you're so right! A serger can seem intimiating at first, but then it becomes so accessible and useful! How wonderful to make pieces for the dress a girl program!

I have only had my serger for about 6 months now, and knew it could do a lot more than serging, but was a bit scared to try! That was a great first introduction to exploring a bit further. It really helped boost my confidence!

Thanks for the tips. I’m learning to love my serger. I recently got comfortable threading it. Once I learned it’s a done deal.Have you tried or seen the way some will start the sewing then tuck the end of threads back under to allow the serger to go back over the tails. That seems to be another workable option.

We've done that before with the Legatos! They sold out very quickly!! But that requires coordinating with fabric companies to supply the bundles. For this release, several brought in stretch denim and some have already sold out! But they know the demand is there now, so it will be back! ☺️ ~J

So many great tips! Thank you! About serging the cut edges of your fabric before you wash it, it has another purpose. I throw the fabric in the wash as soon as I serge it. That way, if fabric edges are serged, I know it has been pre-washed. If the edges aren't serged, it hasn't been pre-washed. No surprises now with garments shrinking.

I too have this same machine and absolutely love it. I cannot bring myself to sew without my trusty surger. I also have the eight thread Baby Lock but find myself preferring the smaller one. I also have other feet that preform additional functions. I am so hooked on my surger that when mine went in for its annual cleaning I ended up buying another emergency back up machine from Wal Mart. It will do in a pinch but I much prefer my dual feed model. Thank you so much for your video. Even though I have been using a surger for many, many years I did learn a couple of new tricks.

When you were doing the cuffs, you’re not allowing for the fact that we have to secure the ends of those threads
@LoveNotions
@LoveNotions 5 месяцев назад
It does work in the round, you just sew over where you started before chaining off. Cut the chain, and you can give the needle threads a tug to secure it, or burn with a lighter (or however you prefer to finish, but it should be plenty secure just chaining off after going over the start and trimming.) ~J
