3 Uses for Purple Dead Nettle 

When I was a young child, I used to collect little bouquets of this alien-like herb. It was abundant in the field next to my elementary school playground and in the spring I’d spend all of recess avoiding my peers to collect it by the handful and admire its purple flowers and whimsical shape.

Purple Dead Nettle is one of the first herbs to emerge in the spring, and is a great first food for our pollinators. It is a member of the mint family, and while native to Eurasia, you can find this friend throughout the Americas and Australia as well. World Domination!

I don’t tend to work with Purple Dead Nettle as a medicine, but I love to add it to spring salads and sautés for a little nutritive boost. The flavor is green and slightly minty and the texture is fuzzy, so I use it sparingly. A few sprigs in some mixed greens goes a long way!

Purple Dead Nettle has a couple of look a-likes like Henbit, which is also edible. It’s still always good practice to be 100% sure of your identification before picking any plant.
