I can't really relate to this myself as I have never compared myself to others as far as comic book collecting. Everyone is on a different journey and following a different path so comparing yourself to someone else in this respect is just ridiculous to me. Things like what year you entered the hobby, how old you were, what were your motivating factors for getting into the hobby, your personal finances at the time all make our respective journeys unique and special. To those individuals that are complaining about others making CGC unboxing videos I suggest they look in the mirror and conduct some deep and honest reflection about their own life choices as this is an immature and toxic way of thinking. We should all celebrate each other accomplishing and be happy for each other for achieving our collecting goals. Besides one of the best parts of collecting is that at some point you may not be interested in a particular book any longer and you can sell it or trade for the books you do want. Thank you for the video.

You have put together so many great thoughts here. Of course, lots of them could be applied outside of comic collecting as well, so I appreciate you sharing them. And, I totally agree that we should happy for each other when we hit our collecting goals. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great video, it's so true and I'm sure we're all guilty of it. Knowing others also make this mistake you don't have to suffer in silence and blame yourself. It's a tough game out there, and it's more common than you think.

Thanks and great points. It definitely helps to know that we all struggle with this, so that we don't get stuck in guilt and regret.
@jsuperflyc

We can distill this even further. Collecting keys make people unhappy. Run collectors and readers want to fill out their runs, regardless of what's hot in the market. Every book is important to them, but they understand they have to pay more for issues that are in demand from other collectors. On the other side, key scroungers don't care what the book is, all they know is that the bigger the price tag, the more they want it. The "best" collection to a key scrounger is the one with the most expensive stuff in it. Of course you're unhappy, you bought piles of comics you don't care about to get rich, and to show off to random nerds online. There are countless examples of books that key collectors said was "junk filler" until they popped, and suddenly everyone wanted a copy to show off. Someone out there always has "better" stuff than you do, so since key guys are always comparing, you'll never be happy.
@wahoocomics
@wahoocomics 4 месяца назад
I think there's truth to what you're saying, but I believe it's a bit more complex. Run collecting can produce its own forms of unhappiness. For example, people can feel unsatisfied/anxious until their run is complete no matter how many issues of the run they already have, especially if they have obsessive compulsive tendencies; organization and storage can become more burdensome; and people can still get caught up in the comparison game. On the flip side, if key collectors avoid the pitfalls that you rightly point out, they can find a lot of happiness. As someone who loves history, for example, picking up a book that has historical significance in the industry brings me a lot of satisfaction. But, certainly, if I'm just buying random keys that don't mean anything to me simply because they are keys, then I'll likely be unhappy. Thanks for watching, and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

@@wahoocomics Ah, the key collector who only buys the "important ones." It's still just a dragon's hoard, intended to impress by the dollar amount. Did you read the Silver Surfer 4? It's a beautiful book. Key collectors don't collect comics, they collect money, and it's unfortunate that the appreciation for the work is lost.
@wahoocomics
@wahoocomics 4 месяца назад
@@jsuperflyc Yes, I read Silver Surfer 4 and the story of how Loki duped SS into fighting Thor until SS realized he had been tricked once he saw Thor's virtue. There are lots of reasons people collect keys. Certainly money is a factor for many. That doesn't mean they don't appreciate the work. In fact, if they were simply looking to collect money, then most would invest their money elsewhere since the S&P 500 is typically a much better financial investment. Because they appreciate comics, however, they enjoy putting their money into them, even though the ROI may be lower. Also, the vast majority of key collectors never show their comics to anyone, so they're not always trying to impress others. For what it's worth, I enjoy collecting both runs and keys. Perhaps some self-reflection on why this video upset you enough to post a couple of snarky comments would provide some helpful insight into your own unhappiness.

The worst thing for me is when you get swept up in the hype of the next big thing and end up buying something you literally have no interest in. Even if that book was cover you still wasted $5 & that's starts to add up fast. I'm trying to take a step back and just get the things I have interest in. A good example is Edge of the spiderverse. They are just throwing things against the wall to see what sticks and we all have to buy them in case something takes off.

The blame lies square on the shoulders of social media. We have thousands of content creators that fiegn themselves as curators but they're really humble bragging. Telling subscribers they need to add ABC to their collection when they know 70% of it is unobtainable. What is the point of letting people know how many, rarity, and grade? Content creators build communities and are partly responsible for the behaviors thier audience exhibit.
@wahoocomics

I personally think social media acts like steroids to what is already going on in our minds/hearts, but I do think the consumer still bears some responsibility. People have been blowing their money on different things to keep up with Joneses even before comics were around, haha. But social media certainly adds fuel to the fire. Thanks for watching and adding to the conversation!

Church, yo! Wisdom spoken. It's so funny you posted on this topic, because just the other day I posted on another RU-vid comic collecting influencer's channel, where he was offering advice to new collectors. I reflected on my own experience, and I wrote almost verbatim exactly what you said... "Don't get caught up in FOMO and keepin' up with the Joneses." It's too late. You'll never catch up, and unless you're a zillionaire, you'll always "be behind" if you view it from that perspective. Find something you LOVE, pursue it with gusto, enjoy the books...and if you're into slabbed books (I am, I love the look of a truly high-grade comic)...buy some readers (or reprints) you can read with one hand, enjoy, dishevel, use and abuse. Make those suckers feel loved! I have soo many regrets similar to your silver surfer #4 (but I gotta say I'd love to have that book! Lemme know if you want to sell!) View comics as a hobby that someday, unlike golf or bar-hopping, you may be able to recoup some of your expense. Comics are ultimately, for most of us, an expense for something we love. If you see any return at all...BONUS! Thanks Wahoo Comics for the awesome content! You're an awesome communicator.

So many great points here and thanks for the kind words! Yes, if we remember most other hobbies produce 0% financial return, then we'll realize how well we are doing if we get anything in return (assuming we were enjoying the experience along the way). I'll lyk if I look to move on from the Silver Surfer 4...though the more people praise it, the more I want to hold on...dang it, lol. Thanks for watching and the well thought out comment!

The big problems with comics reading/collecting: (1) Not buying what you like. Too many "fans" buy what they believe are "hot" or "collectible." As opposed to what they actually enjoy reading/looking at. (2) Using and supporting CGC. F*ck the CGC and what it's managed to do to highly-influenced "collectors!" That company and its stranglehold these days is evil and insidious. (3) Fans using words like "keys." That is THE biggest red flag to alert me to a "fake fan." Those people are just interested in the "collectability" of comics. I have ZERO time for them. (4) The Far Left ideology that has absolutely infected comics since 2015. Too many conservative writers are blacklisted. Too many Far Left ideologues are celebrated. Too many comics absolutely suck because of this crap.

Great video. Yeah I’ve certain found myself going down that rabbit hole at times. Not hating just feeling like oh that’s really nice I gotta get that one and this one and that one lol. I’ve done it and regretted it. I’ve been better at not doing it though because I realize I’m not a millionaire and will never be able to have every book lol. You’re right though this should be fun not stressful. CGC unboxing are always fun to do and watch I feel the same way you do about those videos. One thing though that I’ve noticed since really getting more into the hobby there’s too many variants and store exclusives and “limited editions” nowadays. Everyone has a store exclusive it seems like. I’ve had to unsubscribe from email lists and not look at IG posts because there’s so many store exclusives I’ve gone overboard with these as well lol. Anyway great job with the video as always. I always enjoy your thoughts and discussions. Have a great week. Be well. -Dave 🤙

I want to post one example of how I stayed in touch with the roots of my collection... What got me into collecting comics (quasi-seriously, after years of just reading them as early as age 5-6) was the 1977 Marvel (Toho) Godzilla series. I was 12. That's when I figured out the implications of those issue numbers... "oh you mean I can collect the set!" So as a 50-year old with some disposable income, I set on a quest to get the entire 24-issue set in CGC 9.8 White Pages. Mission accomplished. #4 set in the CGC registry. But guess what I did next! I still had my original VG-VF set from when I was a 12-14 year old...I had those still raw in archival supplies, but then I set on collecting a THIRD set of truly horrendous, abominable, dirty disgusting readers I would NEVER bag and board up. And I love those! In 2014, I even got Herb Trimpe to sign a few of those, only 9 months before he passed away. He laughed and truly appreciated I just wanted to meet him, I wasn't trying to increase the value of anything. And he VOLUNTEERED to take a pic with me while 50 other people waited in line! Sure I realize those Godzillas are not the greatest stories or art, but I still love them. Stay in touch with why you started collecting comics!
@wahoocomics

What an awesome story! Thanks so much for sharing. It's so cool to hear collector origin stories and what niches they have really gone after. As for me, I got my first comics when I was about six and my mom bought me a 3 pack at K-Mart, which turned out to be Secret Wars 7-9. I must have read those comics a hundred times. Then when I was 12 my best friend got into comics and we started buying them off the newsstand every week. For years I was just a reader, but then a few years ago, I got into that disposable income era and started buying older books and especially love 1st cover appearances of my favorite villains. My all time grail I'm looking for is FF 5, 1st appearance and cover of Dr Doom.

Excellent analysis. I resonate deeply with the insights you've shared in this video, as I encounter similar experiences regularly. Striving to resist the Comparison Game and FOMO is a conscious effort for me, and more often than not, I succeed in maintaining that perspective. My approach involves offering deals on comics to others, ensuring that I don't incur losses while still benefiting from some profit. I firmly believe that any profit is preferable to none at all. Moreover, whenever possible, I enjoy giving comics away to fellow enthusiasts, allowing me to contribute to the other comic collectors in the game.

Thanks and good thoughts. No feeling of external pressure here. Just my impatience combined with being a completionist. I got back into collecting 2 years ago after 29 years away, and I have been in a rush to "catch up". For many titles, mission accomplished. Now instead of hitting up every dollar bin I can find, I'm looking at wall books and glass-case books. My main LCS had a warehouse sale last Saturday, and I picked up a raw copy of ASM 361 for $75. I have shelves for comics all over my bedroom walls, and the funny thing is it's just for me. I don't have a RU-vid channel, and I don't invite people over to look at them. I just like having them. It's expensive, but it beats the hell out of the hobby I had before this... drinking massive amounts of alcohol. I've been sober for 3 years and 3 days now, and I'm spending all of that money on comics. lol

Great video! New subscriber 😊 1st, this study on comparison sounds very interesting. I’d definitely like read this study. Is there a way you can share it? 2nd, the idea of being happy for others is a term called “compersion”, that is a genuine feeling of joy when others feel joy. It’s a difficult emotion to cultivate for sure. I appreciate you bringing these ideas up because I sometimes feel I compulsively am trying to be perfect with collecting. “I grapple with telling myself “I need to have this right now.” Or “This has to be something that consumes my mind 24/7 forever.” I just finished playing a video game and decided I wanted to read next. I went to some recent pulls that had been accumulating, and had a blast! Have a comic collecting itch now. And it’s okay if I can’t “keep up”. I know throughout my lifetime I will return once and again to this hobby because it brings so much joy to my life. Maybe after a few months I move on to another hobby. And that’s okay. I think I get it more now. Thank you 🙏🏼

I don't have time to "get involved in the comic community," other than the occasional post to a channel like this. Ive been collecting comics for 45 years and its a strange thing . No intrinsic value and something that will eventually degrade no matter how well we keep them. I only really collected Marvel & predominently spiderman but havent bought a new comic since the Brand New Day storyline . Now in my mid fifties my children have no interest in carrying on the collection so ive decided to sell up. I still love comics and I will keep the ones I bought as investments but its time to let these pieces of paper go to someone else who i hope will get as much pleasure as I did collecting them . If there is anything I want to read in the future I will buy the graphic novel ...and then probably give it away .

I think I will find myself on a similar path. I've already slowed down buying comics and am mostly focused on getting older keys that have investment potential. In about 10 years, I will also probably start selling off the bulk of my collection. Also, graphic novels are a great way to read new comics (and many can be checked out for free at libraries!). And, though it's not for everyone, I've started reading digitally through Marvel Unlimited to save both time and space. I actually think comics are a little bit hard to get the money back that you put into them so that keeps down some of my FOMO. The things I've used and moved on from because of space or need that move fast are Toyota trucks and Warhammer miniatures. Buyers will beat down your door.
@wahoocomics
@wahoocomics 4 месяца назад
Yeah, keeping in mind how much time/effort is required to getting your money back in comics is definitely a great way to keep the FOMO at bay. Also, I didn't know that Toyota trucks or Warhammer miniatures were in so much demand, so thanks for sharing that info!

You are correct. Comics aren't what I mainly collect so to me it's fun little purchases in-between toy purchases. But for toys I did go through this when I first started collecting and glad I got past it.

My biggest regret is buying slabs. I thought they were cool, now I think they're dumb. Thats just my opinion. Might change again one day, but Im currently looking at downgrading them to low grade raw

I see these things in Marvel Comics fan boy collectors. The ones who have to have all the keys. My advice collect golden age comics, or CGC graded books and never ever by modern comics 1990 to present unless they're in the dollar bins.

Vote for the other guy to get 8 then go tell him you gave him the 8 and ask for 4. Or rob the guy that asked you the question and get all ten right away. I stopped collecting in the early Aught's. Now I read digitally on the pirate market and buy the ones I like to support those creators. Surprise, surprise, none of those are Marvel and DC anymore.

Great advice! Very useful for collectors as it's something most of us have experienced. It's important to recognize what causes this behavior and try to control it. In the end one is responsible for their actions, so removing the trigger or temptation, not watching those feeds may be for the best.
@wahoocomics
@wahoocomics 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! And, great points. If comic buying becomes uncontrollable aka an addiction for any of us, then we would certainly be wise to stay away from videos that would trigger our temptation (in the same way than an alcoholic has to avoid a bar). Thanks for watching and commenting!

Interesting psychological experiment. But I wonder if the result is not as negative as you think. Apparently, the happiest countries in the world are those with the least amount of economic disparity (everyone has roughly the same, so there's no need for comparison, and therefore less negativity). So perhaps the sacrifice of $2 is worthwhile to keep others from having $8? But that might sound too much like socialism for an American! Anyway, with collecting, it's a big part of any hobby to have things that others covet. Perfectly natural. And also to covet the desirable items that you can't afford. But yes, there's no point in letting envy spoil your collecting, that's for sure.
@wahoocomics
@wahoocomics 5 месяцев назад
Great point about how wanting/desiring/coveting are a natural, and even healthy, part of any hobby. Like you said at the end, though, we just have to be careful we don't cross a line where it becomes unhealthy. Also, that's an interesting stat about countries with the least amount of economic disparity being the happiest. Maybe socialist countries produce hiveminds where don't have enough independent thoughts to become unhappy ;), lol. I'm just kidding. In all seriousness, though, it would be cool to see what else those countries have in common. I'm guessing they are more developed countries? If so, maybe the solution is to give $5 and $5 (or inflate the currency to $8 and $8, haha)? Thanks for watching, and I always appreciate your comments!
