3 Ways To Check Propane Tank Level

Summer is upon us and back yard BBQ's are happening every where!
But before you start cooking, do you know how much propane you have left in your propane tank? Too bad the tank isn't invisible else it'll be easy to determine.
Don't worry, I have your back! I'm going to show you in 3 different methods. The methods either use temperature, weight or pressure to determine the amount of propane you have left in the tank.

As LPG is a liquefied gas, the pressure inside the cylinder will remain the same from full until the last of the liquid LPG is vaporised. Then the pressure will fall quickly as the last of the LPG vapour is used, as well.

Pretty good video. You weighed and got like 10 and the Guage showed about 1/2 so out of 20 is pretty accurate. I like the weight method. I had 4 old tanks and did each one so had enough for BBQ using each tank up. The one, thought was old and empty, was FULL! Sadly, I think people simple turn tanks in to be on the safe side with pounds of gas remaining and I have do e that plenty of times. All that money down the drain. I have Blue Rhino and they fill with15lbs of propane.

A 20 pound tank holds about 5 gallons of propane and each gallon weights about 4 pounds. That would be 20 pounds weight of propane plus the 17 pounds of the tank weight equal 37 pounds in total.

Why keep one bottle of gas? I have three. When I use up two bottles. I return them to refilled.

Isn't the pressure gauge sort of useless? At equilibrium, liquid propane evaporating into gaseous state will be in equilibrium with gaseous propane condensing into liquid. Vapour pressure changes with temperature too.

Every time that I purchase a new propane grill swear next one will be set up to run on natural gas. Would have to drill a 1" duameter hole thru my 8 or 10" thick concrete basement wall. Already have an approved 120 volt solenoud for batural gas that I would have a valve feeding the indoor mounted solenoud valve controlled by a 3 hour wind up timer. ( Maybe longer time ). End of .day would go down and shut the grill valve off for safety.

Hi Next MoonYT. I checked my tank with hot water. It's less than half full. How low down the tank we go? No one has explained if I can use it or when we have to change it immediately. Pls help.
@carloscamargo624
@carloscamargo624 3 года назад
You use it till it's empty. That's why you should always have at least a second full tank on hand, ready to swap in.

Does the size of the tank matter for the gauge ? I need these but idk if it will work on larg tanks
@nextmoonyt
@nextmoonyt 4 года назад
Most of these gauges are advertised for up to 40 lbs tanks. I've seen a few rated higher around 100 lbs on Amazon but I haven't used it for that capacity myself.

@@nextmoonyt I make my living via propane...those gauges are useless...and as for weight, that's marked on your tank...will say "TW 18, TW 16.6" or whatever the weight is.... the water thing is indeed an approximation...and never go by vapor showing on the outside...happens in cold climates...free tips :P

If that was HOT WATER FROM THE STOVE How were you able to use both hands. Your left hand on the supposedly just off the heat with boiling hot water. Dont bother to watch the rest of the video after you see him holding the pan !!!!!

A more accurate way is to weight the tank, subtract that from the stamped “TW” number (this is the tare weight, empty tank and valve only), divide the difference by 4.24. This will give you the gallons remaining. A 20lb tank holds 4.7 gallons, a gallon of propane weights 4.24lbs. I find it interesting that you point out the temperature level being well below half tank and your weight calculation says you have 10lbs remaining.
@howardmccarthy5811
@howardmccarthy5811 3 года назад
He didn’t specifically say the temperature method said it was quarter full versus the weight method saying half full. I went back and watched it again, he really was simply saying to feel for the temp change and the bottom of the sticker seemed to give him something to point at. If you want to be picky your explanation says to subtract the weighed tank weight from the stamped weight, that would give you a negative number. You actually meant to say to subtract the stamped weight from the total weighed tank weight. 😀

According to the tank in your video it weighs 15 lb Why the discrepancy ?
@SuperHDiver

Propane exchange companies only put in 15lbs or 80% of the tank’s 20lb capacity to cut costs.
