Man, I can’t thank you enough for this video! Never tackled stairs before, or even laying carpet in general. By far the best video I’ve come across on the topic. Answered all of my questions and saved me a ton of time.

Thank you so much for this video! We just had some new carpet installed by contractors in our house, and a few of the stairs had some loose spots over the tack strips on the sides. I tried your little trick of tapping the edges down into the groove, and that did it. Looks amazing now!

Hi mate, I did a stairs landing today and I fitted the stairs just like the way you did in this video and I can't believe the difference in how they looked a thousand times better they looked than "waterfall"! It's the first time I've done stairs that way and to be truthful I think I'm going all my stairs that way from now on. It took me twice as long but it was all worth it because even the customer said they looked great, I've never seen my stairs look so tight and clean. I never used to put smooth edge on the sides of the stairs and when I hoovered up the sides would be loose but now I put Smooth edge the carpet stayed put. Thanks for the video👍

@@FloorsbySouthernboys yes! they turned out very well, added the 1/8" like you suggested and they tucked in nicely! I wasn't exactly sure how to lay the pad, ended up wrapping it around the nosing and down the riser, which made it quite difficult stapling under the nosing lol, probably would do the pad a little different next time :)

Always taught top to bottom that way u trap the riser in on landing and work down.you bolster carpet in as you go down being carefully not to go through it.then lean your weight on hammer and smooth up onto grips to take any slack up.also no underlay on riser the edge of gripper can rub on backing of carpet if customer rubs heel as they come down stairs on riser then gripper edge cuts into backing of carpet.the idea is if you use gripper you use underlay too soo carpet similar height to grips no bump then just hooks on gripper perfectly.like the gripper on the sides although normally only on twists.no need for carpet stretcher to be fair.I also like to roll sides of carpet leave a gap on underlay and carpet drops in.ive found u cut width too net will fray.always cut slightly bigger so cut edge rolled and protected. Good video just different methods.

I enjoy your videos, never too old to learn some new things, but I always used tack strips on the tread, risers, and sides of the tread. Showing my age, but carpet tackers were never used on any part of an installation when I first learned the installation business. They are great tools, and I have used them but "tackless" will hold much better than a carpet tacker. The carpet will at times pull right through the staples. Not to mention an Axminster carpet would be destroyed in no time if only installed with a carpet tacker. Keep focusing on the quality of your work. I am trying to be constructive in my comments, keep up the good work and videos.

Interesting where I’m from we only use electric staple gun . No tack strip unless concrete steps once in a blue moon . Then we use the tack strip method. But never seen anyone use tack strip on the sides . I always contour (Chicago style ) or whatever you call yours lol also . Just a tip we all use white rubber mallets instead of hammer. Not as loud hitting the stair tool . Thanks for sharing .

Amazing to see how we all do things . Here in Ireland it’s 90% waterfall with double grips ( strip on riser & thread ) . Also nobody grips the sides unless it’s a kite or winder (turn) step . Some people will request bullnose style , me personally hate it . We never use a knee kick on a step either. Still great video 👍

I do carpet repair and most steps don’t have tack strips on the sides. When a customer calls with wrinkles on the steps I have to explain to them that yes I can get most of the winking out but you will see a few dimples on each side from my carpet staples. One day I hope to do a wrinkle repair and find those side tack strips. I Wish it was common practice to do it your way.

Question… Do you cut off the carpet after stapling down on the tread each time before you begin to do the next rise and tread? It looks like the other two methods using tac strip can be done in a continuous piece of carpet. Thank you for your answer.
@FloorsbySouthernboys
@FloorsbySouthernboys 4 года назад
Jenny Lyn Sparrow no ma’am, it can be done in a continuous piece as long as your stairs run straight, if your steps get wider or narrower then that’s when you have to cut a separate piece, as long as they are straight you can run a continuous piece

And yet the carpet was nice and tight all these years without any issue from poor installation. They used about 7 staples across the width of the 36" steps, but you used a TON more staples. You are obviously a great installer but this is very strange compared to how we do it in the UK 🇬🇧 I think I'd personally go for the single tack strip on the tread if fitting stairs this style, but it's rare we hug the contours of the steps like that we always do it "waterfall" style by default. Only about 3 times in the last 11 years I've been asked to fit "hollywood" style...personally I think the American way looks cool but the steps aren't often built that way to be able to do it properly

I actually "kick" the width rather than little push you give. That's the old way. A smart installer does width with a "kneeless" installation tool. Waterfall style stems from stair cases that don't have a nose but the riser is slanted where it meets the tread below it. How you place your tackless when doing waterfall with noses will depend on the angle of the carpet as it comes down, and the thickness of the carpet. Installed too high an you will only catch the first row of pins. Waterfall is a good alternative when the noses are small and the carpet is thin.

Never put smoothedge on the riser when you're doing bullnose stairs. 8th step from the landing had smoothedge on riser cause the lump is obvious.

Different strokes for different folks Im a carpet fitter over thirty years and was trained by a old school fitter,I have never had a call back on a flight of stairs, I never used gripper on side of steps, never needed to I just measured twice and cut once Sinai was as tight to the wall as one can be, Tacking? staples? I would have been fired!! And never did I use a hammer to tuck between thread and riser I used a blunted bolster chisel and used force of my hand of course never hitting at an angle but directly at where I would know the joint would be from thread to riser. The only times tacks staples would be used is in the bull nose or if they were open steps. I guess these method’s would do for a novice not enough yardage £££ in a stairs and landing to play around with gripping the side and using a stretcher where a stretcher was never designed to be used. But like I said different strokes …..

I doubt you can answer in time, as my wife wants this done today, but how do you cut for diagonal steps at the top of a staircase?
@FloorsbySouthernboys
@FloorsbySouthernboys 4 года назад
Jaymee Smith measure diagonally from corner to corner and then measure from the point at the back of the step over to the floor in the front of the step And that will give you the size you need and you can go from there

Joaquin Martinez Depending on where the squeak is you would probably be better off just fold in the carpet back fixing the floor and then laying the carpet back down without cutting it if you’re able to do that kind of depends on where the floor is squeaky

It's such a plush carpet I can't tell! In all my years I've never screwed gripper to stairs I've always used my staple gun. I like the tip about the angle of your staple gun under the bull-nose. I totally agree with you to gripper the riser and tread you'll never have a more tighter safer step, when I fit stairs I go top down I've tried bottom to top and I didn't like it! plus how do you match striped stairs when you start from the bottom?
@FloorsbySouthernboys
@FloorsbySouthernboys 6 лет назад
sausage man if I was doing some striped steps I would do the top flap first where it comes out of the hallway measure over from And Row cut the rest of my steps to where they would match up with the top not an issue that’s how I do steps That have a pattern match
