Great demo with interesting information. Sadly the lack of close-ups makes it harder to see or visualize some parts of the demonstrations

Noted! I agree. The one angle was all I was able to get. I'll have videos coming out soon where I demonstrate a couple different ebonizing techniques. Stay tuned.

a trick to speed up the making of iron acetate is to take the steel wool out of the solution after a day or so and let it be exposed to air for a few hours and then put it. back

Thanks to you, my husband and I just used the India Super Black Ink from Speedball on a very special wooden cane (a Christmas gift). My husband sanded it and then brushed on two coats of ink, one right after the other and it looks perfect! We were able to handle it within 5 minutes of finishing it. Will probably add a polyurethane coating after Christmas--but being able to use the India ink really saved Christmas day for us. Thanks so much!

Fantastic! You are welcome. Yes, it's a beautiful finish, especially on harder smooth woods. Happy Turning!

you left out one very common method that's hundreds of years old, Kent. Ammonia fuming!

Try raising the grain before applying the iron acetate. Also a mordant like alum may help the process. We used mordants with different types of natural dyes when I worked for Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Kent I enjoyed your lesson on how to ebonize wood, here is the way I do it for whatever it is worth. All I do is dilute some India ink (black} I apply it with a rag and let it dry. Sometimes depending on the wood I might have to give it a second coat. Hope this makes sense to you. Joe in Calif.
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 4 года назад
That sounds good. What brand are you using and does is have UV blockers included? Without those, the ink can fade over time.
@glor8545
@glor8545 4 года назад
@@TurnAWoodBowl I don,t think it has uv blockers I don't remember the brand name I will get it for you. The box I made is about 10 years old and it has not faded yet. Joe in Calif.

have not tried this but on the steel wool/vinegar a thought occurred to me, maybe a refrigerator magnet under the jar?

Is there or do You know a way to stop the ebonize process halfway so it not will get to dark ? (Iron acetate process)
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 6 месяцев назад
Magnus, it can be neutralized with water, but the wood, like all wood, will darken over time and UV exposure. Happy Turning!

Thanks. Is the Speedball black ink food safe? Is it waterproof? Can it be used safely on wood spoons? It sounds like you said there is shellack in it? Can you use linseed oil over it?

Thanks for the great video, I’m a long time fan who has benefitted tremendously from your website. I’m debating between iron and India ink. The ink seems easier and, being less acidic, I’m less concerned about effects on my finish. And reason to go with iron over the ink? More videos please!!!
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 4 года назад
Great question. The iron acetate allows some of the wood grain surface and texture to show through. The ink covers everything, but will allow grain grooves to be seen. Thanks!
@superoxen

Turn A Wood Bowl have you tried diluting the ink to achieve a similar effect? I guess at this point I should just buy a bottle

In answer to the question raised in the video. Yes. Yes there are many colors of india ink available. A plethora. A 🌈. :) Your local art store has them. Michaels. Hobby Lobby. Or,just go online and look up india inks and you will be presented with a world of color. :)

Hi Kent, can you tell me if using iron acetate is a food safe process for a futur salad bowl let’s say?
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 2 года назад
Great question Yves. Honestly, I do not know. A chemist might be better suited to answer. I guess the question is, will the iron acetate leave residue or continue to be toxic after application and drying. I'm not sure.

I’ve had difficulty with wood getting micro cracks or larger with burning wood. Ant suggestions?
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 3 года назад
Those cracks don't usually distract too much for me, I actually like them. If the wood is drier, it shouldn't crack much. You might want to go slower when burning, maybe gradual stages. That might result in less cracks. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

do you know if mango wood has good levels of tannin? And is the Iron Acetate a food grade product?
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 2 года назад
I'm not sure about mango, but the iron acetate will test it. You want to seal the surface with something like Danish Oil before using it with food. Happy Turning!

Hi Kent interesting as usual, I missed a statement you made could you clarify it for me. I am in OZ I managed to get Speed ball Indian Ink ... you had sealed "Shellac '" to stop bleeding ...did you seal both side of the timber? or only inside? ....Is that means I can cover it with shellac before Ebonising "INK"? Regards. Jack
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 3 года назад
Good question. You can seal everything or just the surface you apply the ink to. The shellac, after it dries, will prevent the ink from soaking through the end grain cells. Happy Turning!
