I like to colour select the sky, then invert the selection and feather the softness all in the colour correction

Nice and helpful Stewart, thanks. The equivalent of the colour mask in a program like Premiere Pro might be the HSL tab where you can isolate and select specific colours to manipulate. It's also worth noting that for those trying these tricks, a drone with a good amount of dynamic range and colour depth would help!

Thank you so much Stewart, just learned a ton of useful stuffs! Coming from photography and just recently starting to use FCP, I was frustrated about selection limitations due to these features not being obviously available. I'll now be able to make a big leap forward in my editing!
@DroneFilmGuide

Sure thing! The only issue with taking photography concepts across is the fact the images are moving so if you're really getting into things you have to move the masks to track the footage. It really brings into focus the need to film well on the day!

Thanks for developing these tutorials. They are the key reason I subscribed when I got my MA2. I must check whether the firmware updates have provided 10bit video - I fear not. Also, as a Filmora user, I'll need to work out whether I can apply a mask to an adjustment layer. It is interesting how these video processing programs are providing functions similar to my still image processors (in my case Luminar Neo). Keep up the good work.
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 6 месяцев назад
Sure thing. The only complexity with video is the image is moving so that can give the game away on certain shots. You can definitely do gradient masks in Filmora. The second technique of duplicating the clip on top and grading that separately would work.

Many thanks Stuart. Really useful. As a fairly new Drone photographer over exposed sky/under exposed ground has been a real problem for. Been using the gradients in Davinci Resolve but not colour or luminance masking. Wish I'd subscribed to your channel sooner!!

Also a great place to add your LUT packs. For those of your who don't have them you should get them. Also take S&A master class it will take you films to a massive next level. It's paid for itself 10X's over for me as an amateur. I can old image what it will do for a pro. Best money you will ever spend.

Another tool to fix the dynamic range problem is the graduated ND filter. It might also be worth a mention
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 6 месяцев назад
Great point! We had those for the Mavic 2 Pro - went out to do a shoot with them, came back and couldn't tell which shots had them on and which didn't. Not quite sure what went wrong but that was years ago so definitely time to revisit. Have you tried them with a drone?
@BenShope
@BenShope 6 месяцев назад
@@DroneFilmGuide That's awesome that you've tried them out on a drone. I feel like they're a little-known tool. No, I've only used them with my handheld camera. I've been sticking with easy light conditions lately but I could see them being useful for folks that are forced to push their drone's dynamic range
@stevedibartolomeo
@stevedibartolomeo 6 месяцев назад
Graduated filter has the issue that if your boundary between sky and land is not "flat" then you won't be able to fix all of the land without infringing on the sky. I know a lot of landscape photographers that use them for beautiful sunrise and sunset photos, through.
@BenShope
@BenShope 6 месяцев назад
@@stevedibartolomeo fair point, it's a big issue if the worst exposure of the image is at the center of the shot

Nice ! Any advise on a current base requirement of computing hardware would be great , Laptop or PC inc Apple Mac maybe . Minimum for say Final Cut Pro to watch footage during the editing process would be tops . Thank you for all your work , living the dream you are !
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! Well, we are using mid-2019 MacBook Pros - standard models. They've always been great for editing 4K footage even when you chuck all the effects on. You certainly don't need the latest and greatest machine. If you do run into problems (which we don't) then you can create proxy media in FCPX which is a lower resolution version of the file used only for editing purposes. When you export, it pulls in the original files again.

@@DroneFilmGuide Thank you , i suspected a Mac given they are a different game of efficiency for all thing editing but i wondered these days. Wedding photography years ago i seen the Mac in the rite hands perform so well when explained to me why and how as i was shown . Tank you tank you a easy the point purchase for me.

Hello S&A great video, i use Filmora and not sure if it has those masks or not.
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 6 месяцев назад
Filmora definitely has the gradient mask. I'm sure you can also draw masks in Filmora so you can do custom shapes if required. As for the colour mask (technique 3), I suspect not. But basic gradients - 100%.

When capturing a scene, knowing that you are going to improve on it in the edit, do you prefer one colour profile over another? As for tools to expose the scene, maybe one day DJI could relegate the histogram to the bin and give us a waveform instead?

Dlog will have a better Dynamic range so go for that if you have it
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 5 месяцев назад
This level of post-production certainly benefits from a 10-bit colour profile. DLog or HLG are the way forward. We used to do this kind of grading on 8-bit footage from a Phantom 4 or Mavic Air but it's quite restrictive how far you can push things.
@frankinblackpool
@frankinblackpool 5 месяцев назад
@@DroneFilmGuide Yep. My first attempt at LOG was on my Panasonic GH4. It was not a pleasant experience and put me off LOG till I got a GH5, GH6 and now my weapon of choice, the G9m2.
@DroneFilmGuide
@DroneFilmGuide 5 месяцев назад
We went down that rabbit hole with the GH4 when we were filming weddings. Started shooting everything in Log and just gave ourselves a ton of extra post production as a result with very little, if any upside. My advice back then would have been shot a colour profile closest to your intended end result but that was with 8-bit. I guess it depends what your goals are at the end of the day but I certainly enjoy DLog and HLG on the DJI drones and would avoid the 8-bit Normal.
@frankinblackpool
@frankinblackpool 5 месяцев назад
@@DroneFilmGuide The GH4 was my first Big Boy camera and I soon learned that the Auto Focus was shocking especially in low light. Happy days. 🤣 I deliberately went down the road of MFT rather than Full Frame, and I've never regretted that decision. Well not exactly, as my astro work can't hold a candle to my mate's S5m2 results. As for editing HLG or LOG today, using my chosen weapon of choice being Davinci Resolve, it only takes a couple of mouse clicks to convert those LOG Colour Spaces into something that looks good on my monitor. I have no doubt that your editing software has the exact same capabilities as they are all roughly the same, just with different fancy user interfaces. I am still learning juicy tips from your site, especially about the limitations of the new DJI colour space DLOG-M. I've given up using it and trying to match shots with my other cameras. I think that I may be going a bit OTT for a hobbyist who only gets a handful of views for all my efforts. Thankfully I have my day job to fund this hobby of never ending gear upgrades. 🤣🤣
