When I think of having a portal vr game, all I really care about is the portal-illusion. Any series can have a block-to-button puzzle game. I want to be able to stick my hand through a portal and be wowed at how seamless and magical it feels, like how it felt when I first played a portal game and looked through my first portal. Something that could rival that bone-chilling experience. While these look fun, they're definitely not what I'd be looking for personally.
Imagine how much better it will be with haptic gloves. Being able to actually feel things directly through the portals. Especially when the technology gets _good._ You could feel the air pressure, temperature, and drafts through the portals too. It would make Portal 2 probably one of the most immersive games of all time, atleast if you retroactively add in those features (Which doesnt sound too hard, anyone with hammer and modding experience could probably do it pretty easily)
For a perfect Portal port, you would need to have a VR suit that tracks your entire body so if you see yourself from behind it looks real. Viewing the original Portal character or levitating hands is not VR enough.
Me and a friend are working on a mod that fully ports portal 1 to gmod without bugs and with multiplayer support + a new portalgun that actually works in vr we also made the multiplayer mod for portal 2
I don't understand why Valve just doesn't release a VR patch for the game. There's clearly a huge demand for it. If a casual modder made a functioning VR mod for Outer Wilds that feels almost official for fun, I'm sure that a huge company like Valve with huge amounts of resources could easily do this.
5:55 two handing is a feature in alyx, I don’t image that’d be too hard for them. The 2D portals for Vr are actually probably a performance limitation. Everything is already rendered twice for VR but two render target cameras might tank your framerate.
It's not a performance limitation. Adesi, the creator has said it was an engine limitation. It won't be possible in Alyx until they get access to the sdk.
2D portals are a limitation of the engine. The way it's being done is by using point_cameras and having those show on the portals. It's probably the best we'll get in HLA.
You mention using "The Aperture" to fix the maps, but all you actually need is the "Portal Energy Pellets and Elevators" addon and the "Talking Portal Turrets" addons alongside the core and voice fixes alongside the portal gun addons and it's fully functional. Outside of the portal gun glitches that is.
There's actually a load of other fully functional Portal 2 maps recreated for Half-Life Alyx by TheBoxTrot. You can play through a couple test chambers, GLaDOS' awakening, the core transfer, and the fall. I think they're planning to recreate the whole game, so aside from the other cons listed, this will be the best way to play it.
3:50 "it's about as content complete as a modern triple a game" bro you burned them so bad that even hell is having a hard time handeling that fire. holy f*ck
I've reviewed Portal 2 with Vopx using the vr controllers and it really is a test of your VR legs, The Geometry 3d is what causes the main issues as the foreground assets and the geometry VR need to be calibrated as well as the height to reduce motion sickness, The character POV is closer to the ground that what my height is but adjusting this this, reduced the feeling of motion sickness in it. The main issue with doing this though is that the character 'hit box' does misalign and when lining up for bigger portal jumps using the orange gel, this can be off centre. The second issue is that the aiming Hud disappears when you do this but the aiming is done with your head. Thanks for the video on this, I'll have to check out the other mods to see how they compare.
Yeah, when people think of Portal VR they think of creating portals and sticking their head and body parts through them and being amazed at it, but that's really not the point of Portal the game, it's it's a puzzle game that involves lots of fast paced movement through the portals, which even seasoned VR vets would get sick from. There's a lot of games you just can't do on VR, at least now with the tech we have. I've heard higher refresh rate makes for less motion sickness but I play on 120hz and can still get sick when playing, so I dunno how true that is.
The Source VR Mod Team (same people behind HL2VR) said back in late 2022 that they may end up doing Portal 1 VR. Considering the fact that they've recently finished with their Half-Life related projects I'm still hopeful. If they do release it I'm getting it without hesitation, especially since I don't get motion sick.
Good work on this video man! I released a similar video on my channel about a janky method using reshade + depth3d (basically vorpX but free I guess). I personally thought it was a cool experience but it's nowhere near perfect. I'm fine using a mouse and keyboard but 6dof would be sooooooo freaking cool. I might just have to try the gmod method just to see how it works, even if it's a buggy mess.
A method I thought of but would require some handcrafting and is only available for the Switch would be activating the motion controls in the settings and use them with the right joycon and switching all the controls to the left joycon. That way you can make your own vr-headset thing out of cardboard. By the way you should insert your Switch along with the right joycon to the box and leave the left one outside to use it (change portal shooting buttons to ZL and L). This works with both Portal 1 and 2 for the Switch.
Some time ago I tried playing Portal in stereoscopic 3d by using steamlink on my phone, which was in a 5 dollar VR headpiece, and controlling it with a game controller (no motion controls) The one room in which you have to keep flying up to shoot your portal into the next highest platform was quite disorientating, but it kind of worked. I now have a phone with motion controls and game controllers with motion controls (I'm thinking Nintendo Wii controller with nunchuck). Maybe I can rig all of this together to get super motion sick instead of regular motion sick.
If your lazy there’s a fan game that has vr support on roblox. Overall it looks really good and is pretty well thought out. It’s still in beta and it’s called: Tunneler
Can you make an updated video portal 2 now has a mod made by gistix which is an actually properly made portal vr mod you can actually hold and move the portal device in your hand and portals dont look dumb and it actually is really good and it is actually inside the real game not a different game its also free if you have portal 2 already
Well, I don't get motion sick, but I'm wondering if it's somehow possible to get TF2's VR mode back into Portal. I believe it gives you far more freedom in how to aim than VorpX does, though I could be wrong
@@Dorainn TF2 was one of the first VR games for the Oculus Rift DK1. That's important to know since it doesn't support the direct video modes of modern VR headsets so you need third-party software such as Virtual Desktop to display it in your headset, but once that is set up you have a number of configurations for aiming. If I remember there are seven different presets with how the crosshair can be moved within your vision (or outside of it)
When I play vorp X I actually use my VR controllers all though they are literally just controllers in the way you'd use your Xbox controller but its at least slightly more natural then being stuck facing your desk to use the mouse.
Hey dorainn, I don’t know if you saw it, but yesterday a vr mod for portal 2 released, And it’s really awesome! Only drawback is that you are flipped right up instantly when going through a sideways portal but I heard many people complained about that so maybe that will be fixed in a newer version, but thought I’d let you know if you didn’t already know
Now you can play (most) of Portal 1 in VR using the Portal 2 VR mod and portal 1 remastered on the steam workshop sadly you can only play up until you escape the cake trap but thats still most of the game and it works perfectly
@@Dorainn it works for all of portal 2 and the community chambers (co-op is a bit buggy though) since portal 1 remastered is a community chamber In portal 2 it works. Sadly it doesn't natively support portal 1 but there is a portal 1 VR mod being worked on. So it only works with portal 2 (that includes such mods as portal stories: Mel)
@@Dorainn , been playing the Portal 2 mod and it is glorious. Only recommendation is to check the mod config to make sure 6DOF and (personally) snap turn is enabled.
8:15 - I was _sooo_ pissed when I found out that Bioshock 1 & 2 had been removed from vorpX when they were about the only reason I bought vorpX in the first place. Turns out I had seen some obsolete game list for the software - like in this video - prior to purchasing. Not your fault, just saying...
yeah me too! half life 2 vr is so good they'd do a great job on portal. you're right about it basically being a mod to half life 2 as well so the only real challenge would probably be seamless vr portals.
Now you're just tempting me cause I don't get motion sick from VR, including using analog/continuous looking and movement. The only thing that sounds awful is the aiming with your head. Also that price tag.
Also Vorpx sounds like I could handle the motion sickness since I had to deal with PSVR at one point and some games quite literally have a similar experience, probably not to Vorpx degree but it doesnt sound quite as bad as it could be.. However, I dont like how when you purchase it its literally I one time use program for 1 system.. I hear that if you have to reset your entire os or lose a harddrive or what not you cannot use the program you bought and for that reason I am not paying for Vorpx..
when i have VRmod-Experimental Virtual Reality it gives me errors and so does the portal gun when i start the vr mod it does not work i really want to play portal 1 in vr please help me with this and why its givng me errors i know i do not have my addons enabled i only have the ones i need enabled
then there is roblox its possibly the best way to play portal in vr, even though its not technically portal and just a portal-inspired game it still involves portals, just no portal or portal 2 maps... and it doesnt actually take place in the aperture laboratories facility, but i think it does take place in the same timeline.
I use my index controllers to play P2 with Vorpx - little to no motion sickness whatsoever. I do have a very high end PC and an RTX3700. but even with 48GB of RAM the game is slightly blurry and I get jagged lines everywhere. I've tried maximising every setting in the P2 in game menu.
i think it depends a lot on specs and what maps you play on. vrmod is supposed to run best in enclosed, low detail maps but for some reason the portal 1 maps only run at a stable 72fps (quest refresh rate) when you're like, looking at the floor.
vopx standing with wiimote + nunchuck in gun cover/holder. look/aim with your face(aka gunface) walk with thumbstick, jump to jump duck to duck(accelerometers). its not perfect, but you wont spew
Considering Valve MADE A VR HEADSET, it baffles me they don’t make at least some VR ports to their original titles. Like hell, they rereleased Portal just for some ray tracing. I don’t care if I puke, that’s half the point I want it. Most VR games feel like I’m moving at the speed of a crawling baby or restricting motion altogether just to mitigate motion sickness, and it gets so boring. I’m playing VR to do wacky and crazy shit that I couldn’t do in real life, and that inherently is going to induce motion sickness. You just need to get used to it like anything else.
someone should make a portal gun mod for H3VR. the physics are amazing and its heavily modable. nobody has done it yet so i dont know if its possible with the current maps, but as long as you can port the maps into unity i can see it working almost perfectly (at least for portal 1).
I've checked the modding discord and they talk about it a lot but people say it would be very difficult, but if anyone brings together a modding team then im sure they could do it.
@@CollyIsEpic wtf do you mean by "open your oculus menu too much it will lag" like the mod is based on steamvr, and crashes are to be expected asspectially when your using a VR mod for an game that came out like somewhere around 2013 (i dont care enought to look up the acual release date), tho i didnt even expirance any crashes, at all, and your whole "oculus menu" issue does not apply to any headsets that arent oculus so why are you even saying that, to me sounds like an issue on oculus's part, wait wtf am i doing replying to some random dude on the internet, that just said some stuff i bearly could even understand
In Vorpx with a quest 2 I've found all Vorpx game head tracking to be just a bit wonky, like being on a boat. All other PCVR quest 2 head tracking is solid, Vorpx doesn't seem to manage it for some reason. Did the VR scanning / using directVR, it's close to working, but just not quite - makes it considerably more vom inducing. Anyone else having this issue / found a fix?
Right now I'm having issues with the uploaded version of the addon. Everything's done, but uploaded versions of addons always give me issues that I need to fix; it really kills my motivation.
I'd be willing to work with a modding team to either A: make a portal vr mod, or B: recreate portal black-mesa style in vr Edit: I am now going to make a portal vr
@@dimitriousdrake yeah def wouldn't be your GPU. My guess is either link or virtual desktop (whichever you're using) would be causing the issue. Unless you're bottlenecked by your cpu or smth but I doubt that
@@Dorainn My CPU is a Ryzen 7, 2700X, 8 * 4GHz... I'm using a decent, but not the official, USB 3 to USB C cable with high bandwidth. I might bite the bullet and buy virtual desktop, I hear it has none of these problems. Thank you!
@@dimitriousdrake before you buy virtual desktop make sure you have good 5ghz otherwise you're better off staying on link lol. i've used a random usb 2.0 cable for the last year and have seen pretty decent performance. maybe try fiddling with the graphics settings on hla. i play on low most times and barely see a difference between it and high
I tried Portal 2 with vorpX once. It looked awesome but something seemed off. After tweaking and testing I gave up with the same feeling @Dorainn mentioned.
