I was just thinking how I can protect my hostas this year as they start of beautiful but get ravaged by slugs - and you tube must have read my mind because you popped up. I am now going into my kitchen and boiling garlic . Thankyou
What is in the container for a mulch? I thought you said lambs wool? The bottle spray is just garlic boiled? I’ve never had a pet hedgehog before but if I can keep it from running off I’m ready. The snails are horrific and clearly the slugs like certain hostas. They are invading my garden
Hi Joe, I don't have slugs and Snails in my garden but still my Hostas get devoured by something. Is there a Beatle or something else that is causing the problem ? Thanks
Further tips: 1. place beer in a shallow container partially dug in. Snails love beer. 2. Buy in a garden shop copper tape and wrap it around your pots. Snails and slugs will not climb over it. It is not cheap but will work an entire season.
Brilliant I have some beautiful hostas and the slugs have had a good go at them so will be using your great tips keep up the good work. I have some in pots and some in the garden.
Enjoying your videos Joe. I purchased a tree fern earlier this year - so was interested your winter protection method. I have heard of the garlic prevention of slugs and will try that too.
Your channel came up while doing a search for slugs on maidenhair ferns. I'm in AU so I hope I can get some of these pellets? They've wiped out all the baby leaves sprouting. :((
Hi thank you for the handy tips, but I’m afraid hedgehogs only eat a very small proportion of slugs when they are very very hungry. Slugs carry parasites that make hedgehogs very ill. They are certainly great to have living in our gardens but best to leave them as undisturbed as possible. Just leave out water and perhaps a shallow dish of chicken kitten biscuits and overgrown areas of the garden to encourage our wildlife and they will repay you.
Sadly Jo the sheep’s wool product has been changed & doesn't smell as strong as it used to & Im afraid it hasn’t worked for me this year. I’ve been using it for several years now but this year it definitely doesn’t smell as bad. Maybe S & S’s have noses? 😏
A tip from TV programme is to put mesh over the drainage hole then add the crockery to stop slugs entering from drainage hole. Also put sharp grip around hosta. Finally a garlic spray once a week and after if rains.
Thank you pina for watching my video. Hope you enjoyed it. Slug pellets can seriously harm hedgehogs if the hedgehog happens to eat a Slug or snail that had been poisoned. Hope that helps. Kind regards Joe's garden
I live in Canada and we dont have any Hedgehogs sorry to say they are so cute. I use crushed up egg shells the slugs get all cut up trying to go over them.
Hedgehogs you say! Wow... I hope you make a video about them. All kind of questions I got. Is they safe to be around? Do they bite like wild Tasmanian? How about rabies, disease, etc.? Do they chew up any garden plants. Subscribed and enjoying..!
Hi. As far I am aware they are not dangerous but should be protected as they are endangered species. They do like to eat slugs and snails as well as dog food.Thank you for your question and subscribing. Hope that helps.
Hedgehogs, a small prickly animal here in uk, they absolutely love slugs 😋. I spread homemade salty vaseline on my pots once a month to stop slugs & snails 100%
