Can You Sterilize Your Soil? The answer is yes. In this video I will talk about 3 Ways To Sterilize Your Soil. Balcony Gardeners don't have a lot of space & often have to start seed sowing indoors. By sterilising your soil you can reduce pests & save money from purchasingnew soil.
I show you how to sterilise your soil with boiling water, how to oven sterilize your soil and how to microwave your soil. These techniques will help you make sure that your soil for indoor seed starting is pest free.

Well I used to throw away used soil and early this year i thought about boiling water to the reused soil which I did a few months back. Now I'm trying it again but this time I decided to come and check RU-vid to see if anyone has used boiling water to clean the soil. And here I found your video. So right now I just poured a pot of boiling water and it's resting in my sink to cool. Before I transplant any plant in it I will add some fertilizer and grind eggshell. This plant will be in the house over the winter. Soil is too expensive for me to buy every year.

@@CloudGardenerUK it will be here by the end of the week so I will soon find out. I am so worried about the thrips outbreak and I am desperate to end it. If it goes well I will give every new plant that enters my home a hydrogen peroxide and neem oil treatment as standard. I'm also going to make some self watering moss poles to help my monsteras become one with their poles, but the risk of fungus gnats was worrying me. Your tip of the mosquito bits in the water will hopefully combat that problem before I even encounter it. And your videos have convinced me that it is time to set up my tropical fish tank once again after a decade, so excited about underwater plant life 🥰🌱. Am I paranoid or is there something going on with potting soil that I've not had issues with in the past? My green thumb has turned brown and I've not changed my habits. This world is crazy and with farmers and fertilizers under attack, are these policies transferring through to potting soils to prevent humanity from growing self- supporting gardens? I find it odd. Adding hydrogen peroxide to boiling water won't do anything because the heat will break it down into water and oxygen. You want to use hydrogen peroxide when the plant/seed is actually present as hydrogen peroxide breaks down extremely quickly.

I personally like the microwave method, as long as your pot fits in the microwave , just have your pre saturated not soaked soil in the pot microwave for 5-8 minutes depending on strength of microwave remove and repeat, wait a bit or place a few ice cubes in the soil to help cool down (don't want to cook your plants)

Question for you. I bought some potting mix I want to sterilize. I do not want gnats or other critters. In the past all new mix I have bought has been contaminated. So returning and buying another isnt ideal. What do you do to readd micronutrients to your soil after sterilization? I worry I will kill all benificial nutrients.
@kdmok
@kdmok 2 месяца назад
DORMANT larvae are in those bags of soil, and to re-activate you only need moisture. This is why soil sterilization doesnt work for fungus gnats, but it will kill ALL the good and bad bacteria in your soil, which isn't good either. Store bought soil need to be dry as a bone for at least 14-21 days or longer, to ensure f. Gnats larvae and their Next Gen are non-viable before adding a drop of water.

I'm looking for a gnat solution. I'm not sure I'm sold on your boiling water method, adding such a small volume of water to a large amount of compost at room temperature, would surely instantly reduce the water temperature, not to mention thermal transfer to the bowl it's in. The first 2 methods are overkill and energy intensive if it can be done equally effectively with half a kettle of boiling water and a mixing bowl. Does that make sense? Any thoughts

My approach is going to be twice annual Zerotol (hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyacetic acid) drenches. Time will tell if this works. The plant I’m hoping to keep alive is Chojubai “red”. @@E.TGropeHome yes it works But! Killing all the microbes is Bad, the microbes eat crap an shit out what your plant likes/wants/needs. That's y after the boiling water you gotta put some microbes back into the soil as I said b4 an then give the soil around 3 weeks minimum b4 you use it. You don't have to believe go do research. Good luck growmie
