Some history about the VW Up
The Volkswagen Up, introduced in 2011, is a city car designed to offer affordability and efficiency. It's part of Volkswagen's 'New Small Family' series and was developed to provide a practical solution for urban mobility.
Although not available in the United States, the tiny car has gained popularity in various South American countries like Brazil, where adaptations such as a larger fuel tank and a slightly increased size were made to better suit local market demands.
In South America, the VW Up is celebrated for its economical benefits and compact size, making it ideal for the urban environments common in the region. It has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious 'World Car of the Year' in 2012, highlighting its status as a reliable and practical vehicle choice.
It's worth noting that the Volkswagen Up is essentially the same vehicle as the SEAT Mii and the Škoda Citigo. These models are rebadged versions of the Up, manufactured in the same factory with slight variations in the front and rear facades. This inter-brand sharing is part of a strategy to maximize production efficiency and brand reach across different market segments.

I am Dutch and lived for almost 10 years in Sweden. Worked in Östersund in wintertime myself. When I saw your preparation videos; I already thought you are more then crazy. In such a little car with a heater standing outside? You should just have bought a older large swedish Volvo or something. Cars have cabin and engine heaters (indeed on 230volt), without that many car won't start. Also cars often drive on Dubs, tyres with spikes. With that tiny car and little tyre clearance you will be floating on snow in no time... You are really lucky that nothing serious went wrong (I assume you made it back safe if you are uploading this). Yearly even multiple swedish people die because of being trapped by the cold. It is quite normal to ask people for help; if you can stay somewhere safe and warm indoors... Going in a Up up north... Galen Holländare!!

I used to live in extremely cold places for a couple years as well. Seeing him picking this tiny front wheel drive car feels really crazy. If anyone wants to replicate this journey, they must at get an all wheel drive car with tools to prevent getting stuck in the snow at least. And I really don’t recommend sleeping in the car. There’s no way a car can get better insulation and heating than a specifically designed house.

I live in the very south of Brazil, close to the border with Uruguay. I'm planning a trip to Ushuaia, Chile, a city known as the 'end of the world in the south.' I also have a VW Up! (MPI version), and this video completely encouraged me to fulfill this dream. I was recently thinking about changing my car, but seeing that your VW Up held up in such extreme conditions, I believe mine can also handle the mission! In total, it will be about 10,000 km (51h driving), and I'll pass through 4 countries (Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile) to go and come back. I'll document everything in a video as well. Thank you for the inspiring content; you can be sure it was key in giving me the courage to embark on this adventure!

I did this in my 29 year old car. From UY to Ushuaia. There is nothing to worry. I reccommend good tires though. There are pretty deep ruts on the RN3. South of Comodoro Rivadavia, where the snow started in July, you will have some slippery road conditions. From Rio Gallegos to the border everything was completely iced. On Tierra del fuego the roads were in excellent conditions, but with ice and really strong wind. It pushed trucks from the road. Some roads were closed for some hours. From Ushuaia to "The end of the world" at the National Parc they will check your tires. Most cars were not allowed to enter. I highly reccommend a round trip. I was going south at the east cost (visiting places like Villa Epecuén...) and then up through the Andes in zig zag AR/CL/AR/CL all the way up to the Atacama desert. And then back to the east cost. Took me 90 days. One of the greatest tours you can do on your continent.

@@traveltheuniverse3229 Thank you very much for the tips, I'm very grateful! Rest assured I'll note down every detail. Regarding the tires, I'm planning to buy AT tires for this trip, even though the Up isn't built for many off-road adventures, I believe it's necessary for the snow and harsh winter conditions. I'm also considering buying tire chains if ice becomes a problem. We're planning to go with around 3 or 4 cars, and the whole trip will last around 15 days. About 3 days to get there, a few days for sightseeing in the region, and the rest for the return journey. The trip to Atacama will have to wait for another time! Again, thanks for the tips, they’ll help a lot !

@@ZoefontheMove Yes! Thinking of that I’m considering on putting some At tires, they’ll give a little more ground clearance and good grip. I’m planning on doing this trip next year, sadly my whole state here in Brasil was hit by a massive flood, our interstate roads are almost all destroyed. But when the trip actually happens, you can be sure that I'll mention you in the description as part of my inspiration!

Hi. Nice video. Here is a few tips from a Norwegian. When you put on 3-4 pairs of socks your shoes become very tight, and your feet becomes cold. Instead you can use 1 pair of thick wool socks directly on your feet. Do not use cotten socks because they become cold when they get wet. Second, the green connection to the car you saw in the parkinglot, is a motorblock heater, and possibly a electric cabin heater in the car.
@ZoefontheMove
@ZoefontheMove Месяц назад
Hello! Thanks for your insight! I had no idea about the cotton socks making my feet cold! Definitely going to buy myself some wool socks for next winters travelling. About the cables to the cars; Buy how do those people start their cars each day at -30? Do their batteries still work like normal?
@vegarvv
@vegarvv Месяц назад
@@ZoefontheMove your welcome. Wool next to all of your body, is the best for cold weather. Normally all cars in the nordic countries, are delieverd with a bigger battery and alternator to cope with the cold winters. Some cars even have a higher temp thermostat for the engine. The engine block heaters do give some heating in the enginebay, so that helps the battery in the cold. It heats up both the engine coolant and engineoil. This makes it start much easier. You did one big smart thing when you placed the thing in the front of your car. If you can make it's even better if you can make it even more closed in the front.
@patrikengstrom6228
@patrikengstrom6228 17 дней назад
I live in the far north of sweden. You can connect a battery charger to the engine block heater if you want to. But normally the heated engine starts without any issues. This year was the first time Ive experienced problems. And thats because it was below -40c and my battery was old. Next time, your welcome over for a hot coffee 😁 Also, there isnt anything wrong with the stove, your gas got to cold. There are special winter has mixtures.

Some time ago I did something similar. 30 years old mini car 45HP, no ABS but a lot of ground clearance and extra lights. Engine oil matched the cold, transmission with standard oil. I went through Russia to the Kola peninsula into the polarnight. At first I bought studded tires in RU, which made drivinig pretty easy. I also had a sleeping bag for -45°C with me and no external heater. Worked all pretty fine. No technical problems at all, the car was running on LPG. Perfectly running down to -40°C. 39 days in the cold. Next time use a multifuel burner with gasoline.

24:30 As Finnish guy, the cable is not for charging batteries, its for engine block heater and cabin electric heater. I can tell you as tow truck driver as well, that the cold (-20 or more) weather starts to get even on our cars. The cold days are always busy in my work. Batteries dead, too cold fuel to srart or car is simply not build for the cold. Usually switching the battery fixes the problems, but sometimes the car won't start until we tow it to garage to warm up, and as for fuel, diesel users need to keep eyes out for not using "summer diesel", which can stand like -10 to 20C before strting to "freeze", while winter one can stand somewhere around -40 to 50C, depending where you get it. Also a tip (which you seemed to do at one point) is to drive without shoes if your feet gets cold, as the shoes work as insulators as well, not letting heat get in. Tbh I have never drove a car that doesn't enough heating to feet (if you take shoes off), i can even dry them up pretty fast putting them to passenger side floor so the air dries them up. I know that Wv UP has pretty bad insulation on the sides, so maybe it just escapes too fast on that car. I don't personally recommend using add-on LED bulbs on halogen slots, as the light does not reflect the same way with LED and can start to blinden oncoming traffic (not on all cars of course), especially on dark. What I do recommend instead is getting something like lightbars, which are only for high beams. They are fairly cheap and fairly easy to install too and don't blind oncoming traffic if adjusted and used correctly. I haven't gone to camping in winter yet, but I stil know that those weathers are harsh even on heated tent to sleep trough without experience (sometimes even with experience too), so it's not surprising you are having "hard time". I know this trip is over, but just keep in mind that atleast in Finland we help if it's needed, even if we seem to be "distant" at first. Knock on door and we give what we can. I myself plan to go to north in week or two, to the same type of trip: Go north, see stuff, avoid hotels and most restaurants and cook your own food. Even if its not winter, I might have hard time as I've never gone to real camping trip before. But the stuff you and others put on youtube keeps me educated and motivated to do it even more, don't stop adventuring!

i don’t know is somebody else already pointed this out, but another reason for the diesel heater not working properly could be frosting. diesel doesn’t cope with cold temperatures like gasoline and ends up forming cristals inside, so to avoid this you can add a little gasoline to the diesel to make it more cold proof. Great video!

I had no idea it could be as hard/daunting as driving on 'simple' roads in winter... incredible. That said, your video shows that the choice and preparation of the car remains the key. I'm not sure that choosing a small city car (built to save money, whatever the badge on the front grille might indicate) was the best idea (having said that, you do what you can with what you've got, don't you?) but it could have been worse: you could have chosen an equally small/cheap car with a diesel engine (these engines don't particularly like such extreme cold). Note: the recharging points where you can plug in your internal combustion engine are not just there to keep the battery afloat, but also to warm up the engine coolant, so that restarting is less hard on the mechanics. Take heart!

A great project, congratulations. I think the modifications to the car were really well done, but I have one question: Why not a slightly larger car??? That wouldn't have really cost any more, the effort would have been about the same, but the comfort would have been significantly higher. A friend of mine has converted a Citroen Berlingo (also with a diesel auxiliary heater and solar panels) and "lives" (when traveling) quite comfortably in the car. And his diesel heater is permanently installed in the car and he doesn't have to set it up first. Otherwise, there are often very good reasons why Swedes don't overtake in certain weather conditions...

Ammazing, so tiny car done so well. Next time get this little guy studded tyres :D but still doing amazing adventure. And in those country we dont only carge cars in night, we have engine heaters too. So in the morning we can have fully chardge battery and warm engine coolant or engine oil

Little tip for next time at the end of the video you try and use a butane stove. It eventually fails. This is not due to decompression rather the temperature. Butane does not work below 2*C. If you want to cook at those artic temperatures, you should a gasoline or diesel stove. Hope this helps on your next adventure!

V2 = either gas air heater under the trunk wired into the fuel tank of the car so no setup is neccessary, or gas water heater in the engine bay to heat the engine and cabin through the original vents :). Also, secondary battery under the trunk to power the heater without the power bank and inverter.

Maan... the biggest issue is using the winter tyres for the Western European conditions. On the north you had to use the nordic compound. You are lucky that returned

Fuel cap. Always give the lock a good squirt of lock oil before winter, and ALWAYS after using defrosters as they ruin the oil in the lock. The heater is NOT an outdoor unit. Chinese resellers may claim it, but it's NOT built to outdoor standards. Propane is NOT a good cooking fuel in cold weather. Propane is actually a liquid at room temperature, and when it gets cold it flows very poorly. I would suggest Denatured Alcohol, also known as 'Camping fuel', T-max and many other names. Usually red coloured liquid.

In the arctic etc they have special diesel as they cant handle the cold it gums up that will be why your diesel heater stopped working. Really enjoying it so far

This video popped up randomly! I enjoyed it very much. I liked the part where you had to milk the milk container!!! I’m in Calgary, Alberta Canada and we had a few weeks this winter where it was -40 with the windchill. 🥶 I know how cold you must have been!

It's hard to explain to people how -40 feels, but it was amazing to experience it! 😅

January 2nd I was on my way up to Finnish Lapland and hit a record low of -37c that day. Very interesting to see what kind of weather the south was having at the time. Later on during the week I hit a personal record low of -43 in Enontekiö, Finland.

WoW! 👍

24:30: They don't charge the car, the heat the engine. I have that in my Volvo V90 Cross Country and it helped a lot during this winter with -37°C in Finland.
