When the cream-colored fin was first seen breaking the ocean waves in 2012, the research scientist could not credit it. Could that really be an adult white killer whale, contrasting vividly with the blue water off the coast of Russia? No-one had ever spotted a mature specimen with that idiosyncratic coloring before. It was a wonderful moment to witness, but three years on from the sighting and the eager academic had not set eyes on the fantastical creature since.

@toocutenoirb.4278
@toocutenoirb.4278 3 года назад
Fun Fact: flopped fins is a natural occurrence in the wild it's in the genetics other pods of Orcas in wild have been known to have flopped fins. It's not uncommon but captive Orcas tend to have them due to looks, genetics, and it's "norm PR wise".
@douglasgriffiths3534
@douglasgriffiths3534 3 года назад
Male (bull) orcas have the large dorsals. The floppy fins may be genetic, but in the case of captives, I think it's due to depression. (Jan Griffiths).
@VincentLobster
@VincentLobster 2 года назад
@@douglasgriffiths3534 It actually has nothing to do with emotion. Those dorsal fins are purely connective tissue. The reason they collapse in captivity is because they don't have the constantly changing ocean currents to support them, so I'm pretty sure they collapse because of the static water+gravity

the white one is a male, the others are probably female or younger males. the size difference between male and female orcas is significant. (adult females range from around 1400-2700Kg, adult males range around 3600-5400kg) so even the smallest male is larger than the largest female, the males also tend to have a much taller dorsal fin than females.

FWIW I am a boat captIn in Maine and a few years ago I spotted a pure white harbor porpoise. The first time I saw it only the fin was visible but 2 weeks later I saw it again and this time it jumped clear out of the water so,its entire body was visible. A lobsterman friend saw this white porpoise in roughly the same area a few days later so I know I didn't imagine it! With sixty five years on the salt water this is the first time I've even heard of an albino harbor porpoise let alone seen one.

I think the length of there dorsal fins has to do with age, sex and health. Males typically have longer dorsal fins. "No pun intended" lol "I" also believe that in cases like that it has to do with its condition. Being white or albino they typically don't make it through the first year or two. Its pretty but not practical in nature and makes them a target and is why you don't see many adult white Orcas. Makes me think that they would have to fight twice as hard to survive and its why its so healthy today. I honestly hope we never know that answer. Some things don't need to be studied or examined. There incredibly, incredibly intelligent and because of that usually avoid humans. If only it was that easy for me

Possibly, that may be the case for albino orcas. I don’t know. However have you ever see the “spirit bears” who live in an area of BC Canada? They are actually brown bears who live around the same area. Because they all live in the same area, the recessive gene gets passed down. Sometimes this gene will be expressed and sometimes it won’t. If you look it up, you will see a white bear with brown cubs, a brown mother with brown cubs except 1 white cub, all combinations. Sometimes they will be all be brown. They are all beautiful healthy animals. It probably started as a mutation but since they all live in one area, it gets passed down through a⃣ recessive gene, so you end up with a mixture. Just like human beings and I expect for orcas too.

If the food storage in the Oceans were to somehow disappear, it would make sense for the to evolve into land dwelling animals to hunt on land. Or maybe just evolve to become omnivores or something. And in fact our oceans have larger predators such as the great white shark and the blue whale (yes it's a predator it eats shrimp and krill) in our oceans right now and these animals have exsisted in our oceans for thousands of years and we've had large ocean predators since the Cambrian period Speaking of the blue whale can you think that an average sized animal like the orca- a species of dolphin might I add- could kill the biggest animal to ever live? The blue whale? No, I don't think so So your entire comment is of a idiot who can't comprehend how life works past and present Next time before commenting something like that, do research

John Orr actually, for a fact. Sea world did use to steal young orcas from their family but apparently they haven’t done that in over 40 years. Either way, orcas shouldn’t be trained. Considering orcas are always on the go, a pool isn’t gonna be the best habitat for them. Either way, they shouldn’t be kept for our own amusement. Just like many animals out there.

Orca’s are beautiful, but a white Orca is breathtakingly gorgeous! I can only imagine what it would be like to see an Orca, but a white Orca would make my heart race and take my breath away!
