30,000 ft HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) skydive with James Shepard, Graham Stone and Stephen Riley. Stephen became one of approximately 100 people in the world (At the time of shooting) who had completed a tandem HALO jump, made more impressive by the fact that it was his FIRST EVER skydive. A very cool customer he was too!
Exit temperature: -35 deg C. Initial freefall speed 269mph.
Filmed on ContourHD headcams (www.contour.com) and thank you to Contour for sponsoring us and the charity with a camera.
In aid of Dreamflight (www.dreamflight.org). If you would like to donate to the charity I have a fundraising page at www.justgiving...
All donations made there go straight to the charity every week and will make a huge difference for the wonderful kids. Thank you!

120mph is terminal velocity, but I think when you're at that attitude there is far less air pressure so you fall at a much faster speed. I can't begin to imagine what that's like.

Its called a "drogue", its used for tandem jumps to slow freefall speed, so when it comes time to deploying the main chute it doesn't injure either the instructor or passenger due to such a hard opening.

The drogue is used on tandem jumps to regulate downward speed. This is mainly so that you open at a safe speed, but it has the useful side-effect of allowing a cameraman (etc) to more easily keep up with your fall rate.

Terminal Velocity is based on surface area and air resistance so yes further up where the air is thinner your terminal velocity is higher

to jumpjim: what type of aircraft do you guys use for HALO jumps, I know its a propeller plane, most turboprops I know of can barely reach 26,000ft
@jumpjim
@jumpjim 9 лет назад
It was a heavily re-engined King Air. Ground level to 30K in 22 mins. Even so it didn't want to stay up there so we had to exit fairly quickly
@derekwall200
@derekwall200 9 лет назад
jumpjim how long can you stay up at that altitude?
@N41haul
@N41haul 8 лет назад
+derek wall : At 30,000 feet you can stay up as long as the aircraft does. However once you exit the aircraft freefall duration is about 2 minutes for a tandem ride and about 12 seconds longer for a solo jump. Opening altitude is higher for a Tandem (4,500 ft minimum), Solo uses a 2,500 ft. minimum. Opening Altitudes are standard for all types of skydives per recommendations of the United States Parachute Association.

kay ger there's one other turboprop plane that piper makes and its the Piper PA-42 Cheyenne and it has a maximum service ceiling of 35,000ft and has P&W PT6A turboprop engines. thing about turboprops is that they can fly at that level and use less fuel.

TDM HALO is cool, I did high altitude TDMs at Hollister, 20,000-21,0000' at sunset , did 1 or 2 a week, and 27,000' out of a king air that only took 25 minutes to altitude so we only breathed oxygen on the plane and dropped our masks and bailed out at 27,000', I loved the 135 second free fall the most and the view was pretty good.
@sanfranciscobay
@sanfranciscobay 12 лет назад
How many people were aboard the plane? Was it just the 4 people that went out the door? Any video of the pilot diving the plane and keeping up with the jumpers?
@jumpjim
@jumpjim 12 лет назад
@raduandreyi For a tandem you are looking at approximately $2500. For experienced parachutists it runs at about $500.
@jumpjim
@jumpjim 12 лет назад
Yup, pretty much. We would normally aim to be under a canopy at around 2500' but when you are doing 1000' every 5 seconds that's not long. We had the oxygen hoses, bottles, and oxygen manifolds around our chest areas which is where you emergency drill handles are so we decided to build in a little slack ;o)

At the Parachute Center in Lodi, CA, a very popular Drop Zone for the San Francisco/Sacramento areas, it's $15 to 13,000' and Tandems are $100. From their website "...jump prices are $15 to 13,000 feet. To rent gear it is $35 for the jump and gear rental. For jumpers who have their own gear we do offer discounts on bulk tickets - 50 tickets for $13 a piece. The total cost is $650 and a savings of $100. These are special tickets and can only be used by the purchaser..."

Does it seem like minus 35 degrees Centigrade or minus 22 degrees Farenheit, plus a wind chill, as you are falling? Do you get cold as you are falling? $500 burned up in 2 mins of free fall and a few minutes under a canopy. Is it worth it if you are a grunt working for grunt wages?

Do u prepare the packing and try to avoid hard openings? 269mph is over terminal velocity I mean. I´ve heard of freeflyers pulling while being in a head down position hurting themselves from hard openings. Either neck injuries or injuries created by leg straps etc.

@jamesshepard7695
@jamesshepard7695 3 года назад
Opening was at 5K. We had Oxygen masks and goggle on plus oxygen manifolds, tanks and hoses around our emergency handles. We elected to open higher as we wouldn’t be able to see the cutaway and reserve handles if we had an issue. And yes, 2 minutes free fall.

You slow down as the air thickens up around 16K but you're probably still doing 150mph so you need a positive effort to slow down prior to deploying. You definitely wouldn't want a premature canopy opening on the way down though so everything was tidily packed for the jump.
