Coffee and Cartridges 45:
In this video I discuss the unending relevance of the 30-06 Springfield rifle cartridge. I compare it to the 270 Winchester, 308 Winchester, and 300 Winchester Magnum.

Righteous. 30-06 is a great round. Historic even. I bought two ammo cans worth of black tips from a flea market back in 2008. $5 for 50 of them. 700 rounds total. Best $70 I ever spent. Came with the 30 cal cans for free. Can't look a gift horse in the mouth when they zip right through level 4 NIJ plates.

Thankyou for your excellent comments of the 30-06 and various other parent cartridges. I am a die hard fan of the 30-06 but do accept why fellow shooters go for the other various existing cartridges and new upcoming ones. I bought a .375HH lately for always having the need for a true magnum rifle in my heart. I do not mind recoil and not being ashamed to still use the 30-06 and will always be doing so.

I’m 68, retired, living on a farm in Central Virginia. When I was a young teenager 30-30’s and 30-06’s were the main cartridges used by deer hunters in this area. I started with the 30-30 then eventually bought a 30-06 and wow what a difference in capabilities. As I aged I bought a 270 and immediately felt like it was the perfect deer caliber for whitetail deer. Now, about 50 years later I’ve discovered the 7mm-08 and feel like this is my new love. When I think of the 30-06 I immediately recall the recoil. Of all the calibers I hunted with the 30-06 had the hardest recoil. That said, it’s a powerful caliber that puts deer on the ground. Always enjoy your thoughts and still learn something I never knew. Keep sipping the coffee and ruminating upon all things rifle.

Absolutely awesome video. Countless great points and valuable pieces of info. Of course I am biased with my 20“ 30-06 main hunting rifle 😂. The key point for me from your video is that the 30-06 is the home for heavy bullets out of a non-magnum. I run a 200 grain ELD-X at 2550 ft/s which works extremely well. IMHO the manufacturers should offer more heavy options, e.g. the 178 grain ELD-X is too light for my taste and will be only 100 ft/s faster

Im a fudd from South Georgia, and this is my favorite cartridge. In my opinion it is the goldilocks of cartridges. I have a wide variety of cartridges, but I always gravitate to it. Since I was was a small boy, I remember listening to the oldtimers talk about how good the 06' worked on game. I received my first 06' at the age of 13 and downed many many deer with one. Regardless of what foruns and the internet says, being an old no frills "grandpa" cartridge does not make it less effective. Most younger guys like the flashy boutique cartridges due to marketing or the exclusiveness of having something that people oooh and ahh over. Plus most manufactures make the newer trendier rifles in the new cartridges flavor of the week cartridges, whereas the 06' is normally chambered in the more traditionally styled rifles that arent super tactical prs inspired designs that lots of people want now.

The simple reason for its immortality is because you can go from taking 208gr eld bullets and driving them over 2800 fps and rivaling cartridges like the 300 win mag with much greater barrel life for long range shooting and hunting, to 150gr bullets at 3200fps for whitetail at intermediate ranges to 110 gr bullets at over 3400 fps for things like coyote or even 160gr solids for dangerous game at 2900 fps, all of this with some of the most temp stable powders on the planet like H4350 with barrel life in the 3500-4500 round range. There’s literally nothing else that can do that on top of being able to walk into any sporting goods store and finding ammo for it. It’s held on because it hit such a good ballistic sweet spot in terms of powder capacity to bore diameter.

I can't say what you see from the mid-west to the Atlantic Ocean but here in the Pacific NW the 280 Rem the 280 AI is very well liked but the 7 mm magnums and 300 magnums and 338 Magnums run the most popular here dues to distance shooting over massive canyons. Here in the Pacific NW the deer gun 30-06 and cartridges based on it have been dying in popularity for many years due to just can't cut it for hunting here and against the large magnums get the job done where you just don't shoot the deer gun 30-06 at Elk across these canyons. The deer gun 30-06 is the top worst cartridge here for wounding - crippling and loosing deer and Elk so that is why many hunters don't by the deer gun 30-06 and go with a large magnum.

@@Lure-Benson lol. I find it most not with caliber but ammo selection. Precision hunter for example. I’m sure it’s great out west but here in the east the best hunting bullet is a tough bullet that holds together and punches through. We either hunt in the woods or tree lines then shot deer run into the woods. Blood is nice for tracking and needed at times. That is also why so many this way hate the 270 and love the 3006. They just don’t know. Safe easy choice here. A 308 shooting federal fusion. One friend left the 270 and he did not know he needed a bonded or copper bullet to get the performance he wanted. The other had a bad flinch with his 3006 and shoots is 308 much better. But again most shots are 200 and less.

Re: Heavier bullet recoil. I installed a quality muzzle brake on my '06. Even the heaviest bullets are tamed down, and my arthritic shoulder is most thankful. In my defense. Initially, when I bought my rifle, I failed to note that it came from the factory with a threaded barrel. I was pleasantly surprised and thought; "waste not, want not." Witt Machine 5 chamber threaded = about a 60% reduction in felt recoil. That ain't nuthin.

I started out as a youngster on 30-06 and over the years have tried many of the new popular calibers but nothing in my experience can keep up with the 'ought six. It's the best hands down. The 30-06 'immortal' should be its new name, what a great label. What else is there that can create such knockdown power at incredible distances for only a dollar a round? Nothing even comes close. Sure you can get 50 dollar a box ammo but I have had tremendous success with federal fusion 165 grain boat tail and those are an average of 20 dollars a box. Couldn’t agree with you more on your points. I’ve owned over 85 rifles from .22 - .45 caliber. I loved them all. And I think the new calibers are just great. But as I’ve aged (65yrs) I’ve just gone back to the 06, 270 or 7 Rem but not to take away from 7 PRC, 6.5 PRC, 6.8 etc etc but for what I hunt in western Canada it does me well. As a note I read somewhere recently but Phil Shoemaker the Master Guide in Alaska used the 06 with 220gr bullets for his grizzly hunts. So I think there is something to be said about experience. Remington’s CDL and BDL now have a twist rate of 1 in 8 on the 7 Rem Mag. The CDL is now chambered in the 7 PRC. So I think we will see more manufacturers bringing out the 7mm and the 270 in faster twist rates. Although I’ve never had a problem with shooting my two 6x7 bull elk at 80yds and 390yds respectively with my 270 in 150gr Noslers.

🕵️‍♂️ Well, After Further Investigation, It Appears That the 7mm prc Isn't Comming Even Close To The "Proclaimed" Factory 3,000 ft/s Factory Velocities, With a 175 grain Bullet! In Fact, I Have Found at Least 3 Reputable Sources That Are Saying It Falls About 150 ft/s Short of That Velocity Being Published on the Back of Their Factory Ammunition! 😱

Nitpick, we copied the Mauser 1893. We developed the 1903 to best that rifle. The US army lost an international shooting competition and then a panic to develop the 30-06. The Springfield even uses a resized 1893 stripper clip. It wasn't until 1913 that 7mm gained the Spitzer bullet. The 30-03 even used the Krag bullet

It Wasn't Until The Late 1940's (After WWII) That Weaver Came Out With Their Model K-4 Rifle Scope (I Had One)! Up Until That Time, Most Hunters Were Using Open Sights and Most Hunted With the 30-06 and 270 Win.! Once the 50's Came, Out Came the 308 Win. and the Early 60's the 7mm Rem and 300 Win Magnums! Reloading Never Became Popular Until 1980's and Affordable Cronographs (Caldwell) Until the 1990's! Up Until That Time, These 5 Cartridges Were 90% of the Hunting Market Out West! Then Came the Early 2000's and Winchester's Short Magnums Began the Short/Fat Cartridges Craze! And, The Rest is History! 👨‍🏫

Once People Started to "Reload", People Started Exploring More Options, Including Wildcats (Myself Included)! Once Affordable Cronographs Became Available, Along With More Aerodynamic Bullets and More Varieties of Powders, It Was Much Harder For Companies to Fool "Informed Consumers" About Their Products! The 06 is the GOAT. With today’s bullets you can literally shoot groundhogs to grizzleys. I have both a .270 and 06 and there’s really no need for anything else hunting. For shooting long range the .308 is more accurate and the 6.5 is all the rage. The reason we have all these discussions and arguments is because manufacturers have to introduce “new” to keep us buying. Same as arguments about the 9mm semi. which is the best and won’t be replaced. Now we have TSS shot for shotguns and everyone is buying new guns but your old 12 gauge works great same as 06.

I don’t think there is anything I can disagree with you here as far as North America hunting is concerned. If I was going to be hunting the big African “dangerous” game, I don’t think the 30-06 would be my first choice even if it was legally allowed in those countries. And yes I know that “Karamojo” Bell killed hundreds of elephants with the 7x57. Even Jack O’Connor in his “Complete Book of Rifles and Shotguns” said that if he could have only one rifle to hunt the world over it would be a 375 H&H magnum. Of course he went on to say that of he was allowed a second rifle it would be a 270 Winchester. The 375 is really just as versatile as the 30-06 but not as practical. At least for most hunters. I’d have no problem with the 30-06 being my only rifle. Here’s a couple of little nitpicky things. The Spanish who sent Teddy Roosevelt’s dismounted cavalry troops rolling back down Kettle Hill (he never charged up San Juan Hill) were using 1893 and possibly 1895 model 7x57 Mauser rifles. Also the original 300 Savage 150 grain load equaled the 30-06 150 grain military load at the time at 2750 fps. Keep up the good work. Happy hunting boys and girls!😊

@@mysterioanonymous3206 Fact Check: Not true. The 9.3x62 Mauser is allowed in several of the African countries. It is grandfathered in because of its reputation for use on dangerous game established long before there were minimum cartridge and/or caliber regulations. Some countries have a minimum energy requirement. Some have no requirements at all. In most situations your PH is going to set the minimum regardless of what the law will allow.

7.9mm Mauer is a little bit better especially for the MG. (heavy round) 30-06 is just a bit flatter shooting out to 300m .. I'm more about the sound out of the end of the barrel that 30-06 is very acceptable out of a 26" (660mm) barrel and the carbine.. .50 BMG has a similar pis out of the barrel as 30-06, just more gas.

I have been a hunter all my life. I grew up shooting a 30-30, like most people. When I got out of college and got a good job, I wanted to get a nice gun that I could hunt pretty much anything in North America with. I work for the public and became friends with an old guy who hunted around the world. He had an impressive jungle room full of mounts from everywhere. One day I asked him if he bought 1 gun that you could hunt anything in North America with, what would that be? He told me to get a Browning Bar chambered in 30-06. He said it is not perfect for everything in North America, but it has the broadest application, in his opinion. I bought it about 25 years ago and it is still my favorite gun. It is a beautiful gun. The availability is important to me too. I love the 9mm for pistol use because of the comfort in shooting and availability too. It kicks hard AF, which the BAR might eat for you, but I wouldn't trade off the weight for a day of hiking a mountain and hunting deer. The bolt action 30-06 isn't a heavy gun. You get 5+1 in the magazine, and it doesn't blow out the back half of the deer like a 300 Winmag.

If you go with the AR 10 in 6 mm Rem - 250 Savage or 257 Roberts these don't have recoil I believe to affect you. I build and sell Highly specialized AR 10 uppers in those chamberings and more or if you want to build one yourself just ask me where to get all the parts and the gunsmith to do all the metal work. I even do an AR 10 in 6mm-284 win that is one of the rifles I hunt with that has a recoil of a 243 win. The 6mm-284 win is the short cartridge version of the 6mm-06. If ever wanted an AR 10 to duplicate the 30-06 that can be done if you are a reloader by using the 284 Win cartridges from Peterson brass by necking up to 30 caliber and that is not that hard being the 284 win is 7 mm 28 caliber so running 28 caliber cartridges into a 30-caliber expander is very simple. Pacific tool & Gauge sells the 30-284-win chamber reamer + the head space gauges. Pac Nor Barrels will make the barrel and Mark Manson gunsmithing or Dead shot barrels can do the final metal work for making the barrel an AR 10 barrel, but you would need an AR 10 LR barrel extension from Bat Machine in Bosie Idaho.

If you know how to shoot, the 30-06 does it all .... usually very well. A well-placed shot at 500+ yards doesn't require a magnum round. It requires a set of skills that a lot of people think they can avoid learning by increasing power.

I love and use the .270 but the more you run the numbers and if you’re a hand loader the 30-06 does everything the .270 does better and so much more on top of that.

If you are good enough 3000 yards is still not the limit for 30-06 atleast for homosepians

The M1903 was a near copy of the Mauser 98. As was the .30/06 was of rimless Mauser cartridges. So much so that the US govt had to pay royalties to Mauser for making copies

I watched this because I am a HUGE fan of 30-.06. Great discussion / video. Thank you. I think factory load availability should also be taken into consideration. There's a whole slew of newer cartridges that I've not seen a box of on a store shelf where I live since 2020. I don't think there has been a single day that I couldn't find something in 30-.06 whether it was some M2ball or 200gr core-lokts or anything in between. Every cartridge company in existence has multiple loads available for the 30-.06. Now that there's somewhat better availability, I find boxes of 30-.06 considerably cheaper than most other options. A lot of these newer cartridges, while quite popular, simply aren't available everywhere a person might live or travel. 30-.06 is literally EVERYWHERE. You can drive through a town so small it doesn't have a dot on a map, and the one general store in it is going to have a couple boxes of it, but they most likely won't have a single box of any WSM, WSSM, or any PRC or any WBY magnums, etc.

I'm not a person who doesn't want new cartridges, but I understand that for the most part new cartridges are a marketing tool for gun manufacturers. What guns would they sell if they didn't come out with new cartridges? So 6.5PRC and 6.8 Western is just a new 270. No real need for either the 6.5PRC or 6.8 Western other than having to sell more guns and ammo😂😂😂 so we can talk all day about new and improved cartridges, but it is nothing more than marketing. The moose, deer, elk and bear that I shot and killed with my 3006 wouldn't have been any deader if I used a 7MM PRC 😂😂😂

Yeah the gains are often marginal indeed. But unfortunately older cartridges are loaded down due to the many old rifles in circulation so the newer ones can be loaded to higher pressures. I do get that. Also, many newer ones are fatter with steeper shoulders so they pack more powder in a short action. Its nice I guess but not super necessary. The 270s problem is probably the twist rate. It doesn't stabilize heavier bullets. So thats why a 6.8 western exists (for guys who buy factory ammo)... So can load up to 180gr I think whereas a 270 will only stabilize 140gr or so. I mean why not? It's a nice hobby and if you just want utilitarian the 30-06s are still around.

@@mysterioanonymous3206 why would I want 180 bullets in my 270? 150 grains, that it does stabilize well, will kill anything you want to hunt. Hell 130 gr bullets in a 270 will kill most anything. Why would I need to "stabilize" bigger bullets 😂😂 If it is a hobby you are looking for, learn how to shot the guns you currently have better, forget the marketing hype!
