@ 0:47 , you talk about “if they give you this side,” without ever going back to mentioning “if they give you this angle.” Why?
@carultch
@carultch 2 года назад
In this lesson, it is assumed that you are given enough angles to know that it is a 30-60-90 right triangle. You do have to be given at least 3 parameters to uniquely identify any specific triangle. There are certain combinations where 3 parameters is all that you need, which are angle-side-angle, angle-angle-side, side-angle-side, and hypotenuse-leg when you know it is a right triangle. There are other combinations which are still ambiguous, which are angle-angle-angle, and angle-side-side. AAA is obvious because there is no side to specify scale. But why is there no ASS theorem of triangle congruence? It is just a coincidence that it has the same name as a bad word (unless you are British and it just means donkey to you). As an example, consider a 30 degree angle, a 8 cm side, and suppose the next side is 4 cm. You can make a triangle from these specs, but you can also make a second triangle. You can make a triangle whose third side is 3.928 cm, and a second triangle whose third side is 9.928 cm. Draw it to scale to see what I mean.

@carultch
@carultch 2 года назад
Start with x, x*sqrt(3), and 2*x as the three sides of this triangle. Given that the longest side, 2*x = 9, solve for x, and find the others: Shortest side: x = 9/2 Intermediate side: x*sqrt(3) = 9/2*sqrt(3) And the longest side was given.

What do I do if they give a 17 for the 60 degree one to solve the other two??
@carultch
@carultch 2 года назад
I assume by "the 60 degree one", you mean the side length opposite the 60 degrees. In that case, set up the sides as x, x*sqrt(3), and 2*x. We are given that the x*sqrt(3) side is equal to 17 units, so make the following equation: 17 = x*sqrt(3) Solve for x: x = 17/sqrt(3) Rationalize the denominator (as mathematicians prefer) by multiplying by 1 in a fancy way: 1 = sqrt(3)/sqrt(3) x = 17/sqrt(3) * sqrt(3)/sqrt(3) x = 17*sqrt(3)/3 We cannot simplify it any further, but this will tell you that the three sides are: 17*sqrt(3)/3, 17, and 34*sqrt(3)/3

question, what if the long leg has a square root of 2 in it?
@carultch
@carultch 2 года назад
Then you end up with a sqrt(2) in all three terms, because it cannot reduce any further than that. For instance, given that the longer side is 4*sqrt(2). That is what 2*x equals. Solve for x to get the short side, and we get: x = 2*sqrt(2) Apply x*sqrt(3) to get the side opposite the 60 degree angle: x*sqrt(3) = 2*sqrt(2)*sqrt(3) Group the terms under the radical, if you choose: x*sqrt(3) = 2*sqrt(6) And that is our answers: 2*sqrt(2), 2*sqrt(6), and 4*sqrt(2)
@julissasalazar8443
@julissasalazar8443 4 года назад
where does square root of 3 come from?
@MariosMathTutoring
@MariosMathTutoring 4 года назад
Julissa, take an equilateral triangle...which is thus equiangular...which means all the angles are 60 degrees. Label all the sides 2x...Then drop an altitude which bisects one of the angles as well as the base. Then use the Pythagorean theorem and you will find the altitude. This should illustrate for you where the square root of 3 comes from.
