So many great RPGs on it. Loving the near perfect remake that is Trials of Mana. But really the variety of turn based, action, and even tactical is just really solid on the Switch. A great RPG machine.
Even though it requires importing, I still recommend the Super Robot Wars series on the Switch. V, X, T, and 30 each have their own unique stories and the visuals and combat are amazing!
Good luck finding Astral Chain Its become rare, or atleast in my area has been for a while. I got lucky and came across a copy in a Retro game store. Octopath Traveler is starting to become hard to find as well. Good game list though! They all deserve to be here.
@@ja1799 they wrote the book. It’s a saying meaning they created the JRPG formula coming out with the first ever RPG to the NES in 1986. That’s one year and some change before Final Fantasy 1.
There are a lot of great RPGs on this list and I'll add some more recommendations here. If you like the games on this list, then you'll also probably enjoy the following: Shin Megami III: Nocturne HD Remaster, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, Ys Origin, Grandia HD Collection, Sega Genesis Classics (which contains Phantasy Star II, III, & IV, Shining Force I & II, Sword of Vermilion, and Fatal Labyrinth), the Sega Ages edition of Phantasy Star, Collection of Mana, the Live-A-Live remake, Tales of Vesperia, Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi, Langrisser I & II, Romancing SaGa II & III, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, & XII, Vambrace: Cold Soul, Crosscode, and Cosmic Star Heroine. If you are also interested in Western RPGs, then check out Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate I & II, Darkest Dungeon, Neverwinter Nights, Skyrim, The Witcher III, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Shadowrun Trilogy. As an honorable mention I will mention a game that might be a stretch to call an RPG, but should appeal to many RPG fans. 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a game that is a hybrid of a visual novel and a strategy game with RPG elements and if that sounds like something that would appeal to you, then definitely check it out.
Yeah, some games are definitely missing, like Ori, Hollow Knight, Child of Light (even thought they aren't exactly rpgs) but there is also Hades missing there, Digimon Survive, that is as amazing as it is 13 Sentinels, and like you said, there is missing Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy X, Tales of Vesperia, The Wither 3, for sure, and for these who likes animes, Sword Art Online Hollow Realization and Alicization, are great jrpgs. Ps. I tried playing Divinity Origin 2, looks great, really, the story, world and everything, but i just feel like this game could play better on PC and with somebody who had a lot of time to focus on this gameplay details, because it sucks the life out of you, lol, so i puted on my backlog for when i'm like 70 years with nothing to do, lmao. About Vesperia, i loved the story and characters but not much of the gameplay, remember me Skyrim a lot, where the missions are like "go find this person on the woods" and they don't tell us which wood or where in the woods, since they're a lot and very big and this just made me spend a lot of time searching for things instead of actually playing thought the story. And to finish up everything FFX could had need a update about the fixed camera, my only complain there, and on FFXII, the battle system made me so mad, lol, i only played the beginning, but i hated that red line and the fact where i could only attack one person or monster after 5 seconds, but they could all approach me and attack me at the same time. Btw, i could love to try out monster hunter now that we can have NPCs helping us out instead of online people, but i still think that there isn't much story there to make it worth it, like with Astral Chain. Recently i got Age of Calamity and Three Hopes, it will still arrive, my first musou, i really hope there is a story to back it up. I'm excited for Harvestela and Tactics Ogre Reborn, but i'm in doubt about how their stories are going to play out, since Diofield was quite disappointing, maybe i should try the Rune Factory that people talk about it so much.
The greatest video about Switch JRPGs that released on 10/6 !!!! Games Missed: - Everything from NIS America - SMT III HD Remaster - Trails of Cold Steel III/IV - Final Fantasy X/XII HD Remasters - CrossCode
My switch is currently on its way! It will be my first ever console. 💕 I've been healing my deprived inner child lately and this purchase is one of the biggest. Can't wait to try these games!!!!
Finally got to beating Bayonetta 2 (been in the backlog). I’ll be picking up Neir tomorrow and hoping to get through most of it before I pick up Persona5R and Bayonetta 3.😅
What a smorgasbord of heavy hitting RPG’s back to back. Wonderful list homie and gotta put a nod out there to Trails from Zero, Y’s VIII & Astral Chain of course cuz they need some more love.
Great video man, I almost have all the jrpg’s on this list lol. Also I prefer trails of cold steel since it was my first entry to the series but zero is really good.
My favorite JRPG and my favorite Videogame in general is a pretty humble relativly unknown low budged Titel: "Fuga Melodies of Steel". I am obssesed with that game and I look foreward to the sequel.
I just discovered the Trails (Legend of Heroes) series and "Trails From Zero" is *amazing* when it comes to combat mechanics and writing. If you are a physical game player check it out before it's too late.
Been a gamer all my life, last Nintendo was a 64, been on Xbox and pc for years, picked up a oled a year ago, sold my series x and my laptop , thought gaming was getting stale and I was losing interest, that was not the case! I can’t stop playing this console and it’s huge library of awesome games , like if you don’t have a oled, go get one now lol
Thr Switch is reminding me of how Nintendo was back in the SNES when they had insane amount of high quality RPGs! All these games mentioned in the video are amazing 👍🏼
@@shadowsquid1351 Pretty much. All it's really missing is Star Ocean 6, Granblue Fantasy Relink, and a competent port of Kingdom Hearts. I'd also like to see Falcom port over whatever games it hasn't already.
fire emblem three houses is the best game on this list IMHO, such a masterpiece of a game. great list tho alot of awesome choices! can't wait for fire emblem engage!
I also love all the classic RPG's that have been released, if we can ever get the pixel remasters we could literally have FF 1-10 and 12 all on one system. Plus so many other classic releases, I picked up Star Ocean First Departure R for like 8.50 today on sale and with gold coins was less than 4 bucks, excited to finally check out that series origin.
I have a collecting problem I think because I have nearly every one already 🤣 I didn't pick up Xeno 3 yet tho to be fair, but it's what inspired me to go back to 2, get through it, do Torna, play the first one (90% done now) and I'm getting it even if it goes on a small sale. I can wait due to my aforementioned backlog, haven't played all of them yet lol
I have a love hate relationship with OJ and player essence. I love all the games he recommends, I hate it leaves my wallet lighter and my backlog bigger.
@@RayWoods same, I'm a relatively new subscriber though. I guess telling you to go watch the SwitchWatch imports video won't help either eh? 🤣 Those guys earned playasia so much of my money. I'm sure going forward OJ will cost me many paychecks worth of games 🤣 I definitely think OJ's going to grow a pretty big audience, he's one of my fave channels as of late.
@Jack I could understand someone calling Astral Chain an Action RPG to some degree. Not sure I agree necessarily, but yeah. Bayonetta absolutely is not haha.
I’m still going to play Legend Of Zelda: Age Of Calamity + But I’ll be looking forward to Visit at Universal Studios Hollywood for seeing Super Nintendo World + I can’t wait to meet Mario.
Good video, if you don´t know where to start with RPGs on Nintendo Switch these are good suggestions. I love RPGs and Nintendo Switch. You´ve got to stop somewhere with a top 30 list, Dead or School, Lost Sphear, Dusk Diver and World of Final Fantasy Maxima are great RPG games too. Very nice season for gaming.
Is Dead or School actually good? I've had it on my playasia "short list" for a while but never pulled the trigger. I think a seller on Amazon has it as well. Maxima is another one on my playasia list as well.
@@JJ-et7il I think it´s good, it´s a side scrolling action RPG like the action stages of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin and DEX. The post apocalyptic story centered around Tokyo is also interesting. Definitely worth your time if you like side scrolling action RPGs.
That’s a really nice compilation here and it contains some of my personal favorites, including recent nier automata. I think it will be really helpful for new switch owners that like rpgs 👍🏻
You hit my top 3: Octopath traveller 1, Triangle strategy and Live A Live. Just finished the first 2, now almost finished with Live a live. hard to tell which is best between triangle strategy and live a live. Triangle strategy has great big story and gameplay. But live a live story is great too, each character has very well written story with unique gameplay. there are elements of unpredictability too. there were "wow" moments when I finished all the 8 stories. These 3 are a must for those who are into turn-based strategy and JRPG😁
Two enormous ones that you missed: KOTOR and KOTOR 2. Easily one of the best series in all of rpg history and now they’re portable. Absolutely incredible. One of the first games ever to have player decisions impact story and probably the first ones ever on console. These games have combat very similar to Xenoblade (mmo style auto attacking with the player manually activating special skills then the character then executes). You can get both for $30 and you will get your money’s worth and more. You think, and rightfully so, that Xenoblade Chronicles has the best story of any RPG series. I would put KOTOR right up there with it.
Awesome vid. Maybe i own almost all these games on Switch ( Persona 5 coming next ), except for the monster hunter saga and Atelier Ryza saga, i want to take a look at this last one. I want to add to this list YS Origin. A very easy and direct AJRPG for people not so involved in JRPG. Good Story, good gameplay, good graphics for a game released in 2006. And tells the very begining of the YS Saga. I also recomend the Dragon Quest Erdrick Trilogy. The very 3 first dragon quest games from Nintendo NES, collected in a pack with modernized visuals. And dont forget to play Zelda Breath of the Wild, Skyward Sword and Link's awakening.
Ys VIII... What a triumph. In my book, it's one of the *greatest* video games (not just RPGs) I've ever played. Love it to pieces. Glad you included it! A true must-play game.
Ones I would also add are Voice of Cards (The Isle Dragon Roars, The Forsaken Maiden, and The Beasts of Burden) (Cheap and short JRPGs with very basic gameplay but with decent stories and God-tier sountracks) Ni No KunI Wrath of the White Witch (or Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom but I much prefer Wrath of the White Witch) Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning (If you want a high fantasy RPG with honestly the best combat gameplay I've ever seen. The only downside is that it is an "HD Remaster" that they put very little work into and looks exactly like it did on the 360) Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (A "dungeon crawler" similar to Diablo but with Marvel characters) Battle Chef Brigade (Not really an RPG as there is no leveling system but I will recommend this game any chance I get) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (A modern Castlevania game. The game's development was led by former Castlevania series producer Koji Igarashi and is considered a spiritual successor to the series)
This is is the first time I've seen anyone say that three hopes did something better than three houses..... and after playing both...... yeah no hard disagree
Weird I passed on three houses because of all the relationship building stuff (everyone tells me to play it as I loved triangle strategy) somehow I didn't know anything about three hopes existence.
Dragonquest builders 1 & 2 are amazing, The only game I have replayed more then these two has been FF7. I think I am on my 5th playthrough of dragonquest builders 2 and 4th of number 1
I would like to add Dust an Elysian Tail to the list it's a pretty decent indie metroidvania action rpg it has a nice hand drawn art style kinda similar to Ori and the Blind Forest.
Thanks for that, I'll have to check it out. I'm always all ears for indie lesser known games and while I lean heavily on RPG more than metroidvania, this game sounds good by your description. I'm always down to find new indie titles I haven't heard of.
@@JJ-et7il One cool part about the game is most of the game was done BY one guy a self taught programmer although he had help with the story and hired a company called HyperDuck SoundWorks to make the music.
@@melficeskye292 I love that kind of thing. Stardew Valley is an incredible game made by 1 guy. That being said, there's no shame in outsourcing certain aspects to professionals. If I were making a game I definitely would need help since it requires at bare minimum an intermediary knowledge of several different things. I think even teams of 5-10 people creating something good, it's pretty amazing to me.
Respect for having Trails from Zero on this, very good way to get into the series and honestly it is the only game on this list that rivals Persona 5 R for me. Falcom are so underappreciated with their talents and i hope someone shines beacon on them in the future because Nintendo nor Sony do despite their stellar game series.
@@Touma_S Not too crazy its because Sony legit abandoned Japan and they were all on with that platform unfortunately. I kinda hope they partner with Xbox tbh but NIS since getting publishing rights is bringing all the games West which is hype.
@@TheEregosyep Nisa doing good still translation errors and the whole lawsuit to fan translator team though . I'd say it's more new audiences wanting to try the series but not wanting to put time into all the games
Fire emblem 3 hopes is like a warriors game 😅 I don't think trials of mana should be there although the graphics have been enhanced SE removed the 3 player mode from the original. Cat quest 1&2 should be mentioned, Alliance alive, langrissa, lost sphere and I am satsuna should be considered
You deserve a like just for acknowledging the existence of NEO The World Ends With You Criminally underrated JRPG, one of the best action games of the generation and like 6 people played it
The title of this video should have been "Big JRPGS", not just RPGS in general, since incredibly good games like Dark Souls and Divinity Original Sin II are not included and the list only includes Japanese styled RPGS.
Xenoblade is really the best thing that happened to the videogame world. By the way. The whole Atelier saga is on the Swirch from Rorona of the PS3, all if them. These are awesome as well. And also I liked Megadimension Neptunia V II.
Great list! I love most of the games you mentioned. I know that Pokemon doesn't need a recommendation but I really do think that Pokemon: Legends Arceus is an extremely fun RPG as well.
@@DIRTYSOUTHSHINOBI I actually don't really like Arceus much. But since making that comment Pokemon Scarlet came out, and I would definitely recommend that over pretty much any Pokemon game on the system.
