TBF I don't think Testament themselves would care much; their mannerisms and theme song make it very clear that they view themselves as both a man and woman interchangeably pretty much at any given time so they wouldn't care as long as you aren't rude about it.
I love that your main complaint with Johnny's outfit is that he didnt have enough belts and buckles. You understand the aesthetics of this franchise 100%
There’s a fun part about the game’s fashion history that I like. Some of the older characters in the franchise debuted back when the games were super pixelated, but the creator wanted them to have distinctive fashion all the same. So he designed them to have certain pieces of clothing or accessories-like Johnny’s belt-as big as possible, so he could detail them in the pixelated art style properly. By the time the games got more high-detail, these oversized bits of fashion were already iconic to the characters, so what once was artistic license became the characters legitimately wearing dramatically oversized accessories here and there.
Yeah I love how they managed to still incorporate the original nun motif, but made it so much more like casualwear. Her outfit in the old game was basically just "sexy nun."
the really cool thing too is that the designers went out of their way to make her outfit hide to more naturally masculine parts of her body in the same way that real life transwomen do. absurd attention to detail and the design team really outdid themselves with this one
One thing that I really appreciate about Nagoriyuki's look is that his leather jacket/leather skirt combo is meant to emulate a samurai's kata-hada. His backstory is that he's a Nigerian who became a samurai, and emulating a traditional Japanese look using more modern, foreign clothing styles is a cool way of blending that into his design.
You definitely described it better than i was able to articulate. I feel like a lot for characters had that typical samurai design, but i did appreciate how his specifically felt more modern and somewhat streetstyle. That's what i was getting at with the comments around the jacket.
@@rickkim2931 Guilty Gear vampires don't have the typical weaknesses of classical vampires, but Nago has a bloodlust that he keeps in check through zen and meditation, contrary to Slayer who has an immortal wife to quench it.
something you might like about Bridget's handcuff specifically. She's a bounty hunter and uses the big handcuff to capture people (as far as characters go she's pretty small so its too big for her but about the right size for many gg characters) but as a remedy for this during gameplay shes always dancing and swaying side to side like she's hula hooping in order to keep the handcuff from falling.
You gotta appreciate how Strive took a lot of the hyper-eccentric designs of Xrd and made them more palettable while also staying true to the character's evolution. It makes a lot of the outfits feel more viable for high or alternative fashion in the real world in a way that compliments and is complimented by the artstyle.
I might add some stuff: -Order Sol's outfit is based on Ky's older outfits, so you might want to look at them side by side. -Elphelt has a very different more pink outfit in Sign, which is very interesting also look at side by side with the Revelator design. -There is concept art of the characters from Strive in the gallery of the characters on the wiki that focuses on the clothing of the characters which you might enjoy looking at. -I really like Zappa's 2 later designs with his hat that you can find in his gallery.

I was worried you wouldn't talk about Ky's outfit since a lot of the community finds him boring and I was so glad when you mentioned him at the end with his son Sin. Ky's over the shoulder jacket is a nod to his previous Holy Order uniform but with the more casual outfit underneath to show how his character has mellowed out over the years. Also Ky has hope written on his belt buckle as a testament to his ideals and Sol has free written on his just to make fun of Ky.
I don't understand people's dislike of the Strive decision. If anything, I think it's the freshest Ky has looked and it correlates well with the evolution of his mindset, like you mentioned and it also looks amazing in motion in-game. If anything, I think the Xrd design is now the worst one to me, the ponytail doesn't fit him at all and I think the fact that it's essentially the Holy Order design (which is already perfect) with added frills and whatever makes it really weak. If instead they kept the cape from his Intro/instant Kill or went to a design similar to Overture or less baggy, he would've looked better in my eyes.
Wait, people's opinion on Ky is one thing, but his Strive redesign is absolutely his freshest look yet. Allthough I've seen some comments think he looks too K-Pop now and less regal, which I disagree. The jacket hanging over his shoulders like a cape is so smart. It says so much about him being a king but is presented more elagently than let's say his Overture design which went a bit overboard. Tldr: 10/10 outfit.
i started the series with xrd but my god his strive design is the one thing that made me regret buying it over the newer game. designs like i-no and ky look so clean (but it sort of balances out because i dont like the looks of sol and chipp)

Anji's design of going crop jacket without a shirt is actually a decision of the character in lore. Supposedly, he doesn't wear a shirt because it encourages him to not get hit and be hurt, complimenting his dancing fighting style of dodging through an opponent's attack.
What I love about Gio is that she is the security guard for the president if I remember correctly. So her outfit has this professional after work vibe like she isn't buttoned up anymore her sleeves are rolled up and I love the trousers really sleek but comfy as well. Just overall great look even her hair is great
yeah, Jam's sleeves are pretty great in-motion in the game, since she has a good number of animations that include her moving her arms in big sweeping circles, which her sleeves make look SUPER dramatic.
Don't care much for fashion but as a fan of the game this was very informative and entertaining. I definitely got to notice and appreciate certain details I wasn't aware of before.
Slayers outfit is actually black but when cell shading (the style of digital coloring) they used a greenish grey to highlight the black so the design wasn't a wall of black in his character design, thus making it look murky and the details of the pleats in his dress pants being lost in the official art work.
It's so interesting seeing how much thought goes into coordinating colors and pieces of outfits in things like jojo and guilty gear that I wouldn't have noticed without these videos. It helps me appreciate character design much more. Really looking forward to what you make in the future, you have a really fun energy.
I'd bet you have a completely different audience of passionate fans chiming in on each of these videos; that must take a lot of patience. I felt like I was learning more about statement and coordination just from watching!

I love the little details to a lot of the fits: Ky has a skintight bracer for his sword arm, Zato's boots have cute little red bows, Goldlewis's gloves have horseshoes on them; small but important embellishments to further accentuate the character through fashion. Great video, can't wait to see more if you do the yet-to-be-released DLC characters later on :)
A little bit on May's hat: she's part of the Jellyfish Pirates, so her hat in conjunction with her long hair is made to mimic a jellyfish's round body and tentacles.
I know you already had a ton of suggestions but a King of Fighters fashion design analysis would be cool, specially if you compare the different outfits from the same character(many characters change outfit, some year by year, others every 3 or 4 years)
A little detail that I love about Ky Kiske's outfit is how his shirt has a sleeve on the right arm but not on the left arm, this is because when Ky uses his "Dragon Install" his left arm is covered by a blue electric/magic energy that burns his clothes, it's this small attention to detail that I love abut the outfits in this franchise
Really great hearing you talk about all these designs. I'm a big Guilty Gear fan so it was great getting the perspective of someone judging the designs without knowing all the backstories and playstyles, and seeing how much of their character was able to come across visually.
It's funny you mention Caitlyn from LoL, because when Testament's new design was revealed, I saw so many people who were pointing out the similarity between the two, lol.
Venom is openly gay, bridget is trans, and testament is NB. Love that for them (but lets be real, all the characters are queer) but GG's queer rep is miles ahead of a lot of games we get from japan, which is a bittersweet feeling.
I think Baiken's outfit is interesting though it's really hard to see from her Strive key-art, it focused on other things (... Like the sword). The black jacket tied over the shoulders, the tattered sleeve, the trim and patterns on the robe, and the eyepiece!
Aw man I was hoping you'd cover A.B.A's or Testaments older design! They're some of my personal favourites because of how grunge/dark they are, and A.B.A's entire look is super cute!

I'm just glad you touched on my favorites, but that also comes along with knowing their personalities. What I love about Guilty Gear is their outfits speak for their characters, one look at them and you can immediately understand their tones, personalities, and behaviors. I think the way they're posed also feeds into that but man they're just fantastic characters, and I think the franchise is worth investing into. Also gonna cap it off with saying superb content, I'm not the type of guy to get into the nitty gritty of analyzing fashion but your videos prove very fun to watch.
Another really interesting video. I had definitely noticed the same omnipresence of belts and buckles, but hadn't really connected it to YuGiOh- but now that I think about it, the two series share a surprising amount of design similarities. Really glad to see you so up on Millia's look, as she is one of my favorites from the games and I think she is great in diverging heavily from the look of a lot of the other female characters, which unfortunately default to some variation of a "sexy no-pants" kind of thing. Also very onboard with your love for I-No's hat, which really is pretty iconic to her whole look and vibe.

Testament is actually nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns in this game, and I love that they have a more feminine outfit in this game while still having the deep, almost masc leaning voice, it really gives me a lot of euphoria as a trans woman with a deeper voice myself and I just love their vibes!

As a huge guilty gear fan I'm loving all of the content I'm seeing with people with no connection to the series sharing their input on the character designs, music, and in this one, fashion! I think you touched on a lot of the characters and specific pieces that I love the most - I was so happy when you pointed out the red pieces around Sol's waist, its such an incredible touch to me. I also found it funny when you compared May and Bridget - the two characters entered the series as cutesy characters with very evocative outfits(May of a pirate, Bridget of a nun), and they both entered Strive with major outfit changes that modernized their looks in similar ways. The two were shown together a lot in the early games as the ray-of-sunshine girl characters, and I love how their redesigns match each other as they mature into young women with an open view of the world and the freedom to present themselves as unique individuals. Maybe baggy sweatshirts and soft comfort clothes isn't the most bold look, but I think it's a cute expression of individuality and freedom in a series entry that's full of characters with similarly exposing(MOSTLY figurative :3) redesigns. That's always how I read into their outfits, at least.

The thing about Guilty Gear's design philosophy is that it's all based on metal and rock music. The characters, move names, and fashion is all based off of that. The creator of the series is also responsible for the metal soundtrack
I have no idea how did I get here haha but I guess it was a mix between me searching Guilty Gear and drawing tutorials lol but honestly that was a nice surprise, your inputs on how the design of the characters were made actually gave me some insight in my character concept art classes, thank you very much
I think it’s cool to compare Diasuke Ishiwatari (guilty gears creator) and Hirohiko Araki (jojos creator) since Araki ended up leaning so heavy into the fashion that he essentially became a fashion designer, while Daisuke is much more of a character designer, aiming more to mirror story or gameplay in design
It’s also cool that Daisuke creates almost every aspects of his games especially the first where he did the music, coding, designs, art, and even some voice acting, now he still makes the music and designs but much less involved overall
OMG if you go too deep into the fighting games there are a lot of extravagances there. But yeah, the video was super interesting. If I had a body like Ky's, I would definitely try his outfit. The jacket over his shoulder is dramatic and fashionable to me. Personally, I would like to see a Final Fantasy video, one with the protagonists and one with the antagonists. The Edea/Artemis's dress is incredible. And also, what about the new Nikki trailer? It is a game about dressing a girl and the last dress in the trailer is wonderful. Take a look at Nikki's series. (Really glad you took a look at Raven) Also I really like Testament's older designs did you have a preference when you looked or did you just pick the newest iteration?
My research could always be better, but I definitely try to get a decent understanding 🙏🏽 And I honestly just went with most recent iterations and the most consistent image concepts across all characters
Really enjoyed hearing your insights on this, especially on the colors since I dont tend to think about those so much. Arc systemworks(the developers) have made some merch like mays and bridgets hoodie but I wish they'd make more, I would totally wear something like nagoryukis jacket. Also really loved your outfit for this video, the only thing that could make it more guilty gear would be having random little words/phrases engraved/printed on some part.

I absolutely love Milla's Strive outfit (the one you showed). It's clean, it commands confidence and respect, and it looks damn cozy to be in too. I love Bridget's outfit because (aside from the giant cuff) it just looks and feels practical. It's something you can wear any day, for most occasions.

Really love the earnest and detailed critique/analysis of the fashion of fantasy characters. It's an aspect that people generally just say "wow, they look cool!" too.
No way you did a Guilty Gear looks video! It's was always a niche franchise in such a niche genre and I'm really glad more people are getting into it after STRIVE came out. The soundtracks are all phenomenal (if you are into rock music that is) and the lore is absolutely WILD with fantasy and scifi themes matched together in such a cool way I can't describe in words.

I'm actually really enjoying these outfit analysis videos. You bring such a good energy to it and teach me a lot. It's been a while since I've watched it, but I remember Yu Yu Hakusho having tons of different outfits for the main cast but they all likely are still super 90s in aesthetic
It's interesting to hear someone who understands designs, but is oblivious to the fact that those are made for a fighting game, with a point of telling what the character's supposed to do from a first glance, instead focusing on more major and minor details, like the olive tone on Slayer or disbalance on Venom
I've played games for years - so well aware that characters often have obvious details indicating their nature. I find it fun take a more objective approach to the analysis 😉
Finally, spending hundreds of hours on this series, between playing it and watching tournament footage, will pay off. I don't know how extensive your research was, but one thing I can recommend is watching some gameplay, because that'll help notice more detail in the outfits. And it's always good to see all of those elements in motion. Also, it would be great if you went over some of the older designs too. Because, for example, Leo looked even more like a lion in his older outfit. Unless you only wanted to talk about the looks you liked, which is fine. But there is quite a bit of history/evolution in there, so that'd be cool to see. Especially since Strive really modernized a lot of looks, whereas previously they looked more fantasy inspired. Like, what's your opinion on Axl's jorts? Or his look from X2? Or I-no's older outfit? Chipp's? Sin's and Ky's? May and Millia looked very different too. I'm just curious. Oh, and one tidbit - Answer's mask doesn't match his shirt. It's a PART of his shirt. Couldn't believe it either. And I do agree - leg harnesses are underutilized. You literally get MORE pockets and it looks cool, like, come on! Add those half-skirts to it, and oh boy, you've got yourself a banger. One design I always liked was Faust. It's very simple, but very fitting. Everybody was really surprised when they revealed him in Strive, becasue not only his design changed, his characterization did too. He's still the same character, obviously, but now, instead of being very cartoony, he's very creepy. Interesting. (Originally he was even more different, a psychopath, basically.) Also, Potemkin. Yes, he's kind of a big boring soldier man (yeah, he's not a robot, he's just THAT big), but his previous design was more interesting. Maybe not as cool, but definitely more interesting. And Baiken - previously she was literally just a wandering samurai type of design, but in the newer games she got some changes that blend western and eastern styles pretty nicely. Funnily enough, that change was inspired by a cosplay that someone did, where they did the same thing, giving an eastern look more of a western flare, with the jacket and the boots. Oh, and btw, your outfit is pretty nice too. That top is great. Now, I'm gonna be an absolute nerd here, so sorry in advance. You can just ignore it, if you want. Without going to deeply into the lore - Guilty Gear takes place in like, 2187. In a world where digital technology has been outlawed (for the most part) in favor of magic. Also, there are man-made organisms (monsters, for the most part) imbued with said magic, who at some point got tired of being humanity's slaves and waged war. The eponymous Gears. There are humanoid gears too, and one can be turned into a gear as well. Sol, Sin, Dizzy, and Testament are all gears, or part gears. Just so we have context. Sin is Ky's and Dizzy's son, but Sol was taking care of him, for the most part. That's why Sin's and Ky's outfits are so similar. Originally, Ky was a knight and his outfit was practically identical to Order Sol's (who's, you know, just Sol, but when he was in the Order of the Holy Knights). Now (and in Xrd, the one where his hair is longer) Ky is a king. Just like Leo, who I already talked about. Axl is British, so the belt buckle is a stylized Union Jack. It's even more prominent in his older outfits. Also, he's a time traveler. Venom's pants are not two-tone per se, those are white pants with one pant leg, over black tights. Also a really intersting idea. Johnny is also a pirate. In fact, he's the leader of the group May belongs to. Originally Testament's outfit was very similar, but without the steampunk vibe. There was still a long skirt, but there also was a crop top. And they looked less feminine in general. That created an interesting contrast, I think. Chipp is indeed, a ninja. He's a former drug addict/dealer who got saved by a man who was also kind of a ninja. Now, Chipp has his own country, and Answer works for him. Zato is blind, that's why he has his eyes covered. But that's also why he has Eddie, that shadow creature. Originally Zato had even more of a plain, tight black body suit, and Eddie was more of a monster. Also, funny you said that it's reminiscent of JoJo, because Dio's voice actor also voiced Zato in the Japanese version. And in English version it's the same voice actor as Jotaro's. Happy Chaos stole his jacket from a security guard. The same type of jacket that Giovanna originally wore, but she doesn't in gameplay. Also, his harnesses are just gun holsters. No idea why he doesn't wear shoes, though. In older games, Sol had more of a sleeveless top instead of the jacket. Looked very similar all things considered, but I gotta say - giving him the jacket really elevates the design. Makes him look more mature. Though there was a design where he wasn't as buff - that was really cool I thought, because it kinda made you realize that he's incredibly strong due to his magic too, not only because he Punches Hard. And that little accessory he has? This loincloth type of thing? It's pretty cool, yeah. In older games it was longer and kinda pointed instead of this little square, but the idea is the same. It's also similar to that half-skirt idea like some JoJo characters have. Okay, there's more to say, but I'll leave it at that for now. But I'll be happy to talk some more if a part 2 ever happens.
this was an absolutely phenomenal analysis and genuinely one of my favourite comments (even though it’s closer to an entire essay lmao) i’ve ever seen on youtube. i’m an incredibly big fan of guilty gear too (but definitely haven’t invested as much time into the games as you, as i’m (regrettably) only a recent fan) so hearing you link aspects of the lore and characters’ unique personalities and additional inspirations - that have influenced their designs- which I also noticed and looked into a ton, made me smile so much :) also i’m so glad someone finally mentioned Faust’s design and how intriguing his sudden shift from xx & xrd to strive was! he’s one of my favourite characters of all time, my main in every installation of the franchise so far, and the literal thing that got me into guilty gear in the first place so hearing anyone talk about him in detail and especially the links in his design to his goofy personality and gameplay makes me very happy lol. i also find that the use of more flowy and loose scrubs in his recent design is very evocative of his original design as dr. baldhead (atop his colour palette being primarily one colour again) which, lore-wise, is very fitting, since he is basically trying his best not to regress into that again (aka fighting his inner demons). one final thing to mention (since i’m reading way too much into this) is how incredible it is to me that the character designers managed to retain a very similar silhouette for him with the syringe thing (not sure what to call it) hanging from his waist instead of the usual part of his coat that would have been in front of/in between his legs in xrd, kind of in xx and definitely as baldhead, with a completely new twist. that’s all but again, i was astounded by the level of detail you included and unpacked in just a youtube comment alone for SO MANY characters, so thank you, it was a fun read! :)

It's interesting hearing about the designs from this perspective, as i'd say i'm a bit far from the fashion world but anyone can still enjoy it from a distance I would like to mention how some parts of the design are linked to what type of character they are in the story (which is why you see that cuff as a belt for bridget, but not for other characters), that shouldn't affect an opinion from an outsider's perspective but yeah, sometimes there are reasons That being said, if possible i would like to hear if your opinion on sin changes with the extra context that he's 5 years old

Love hearing the fashion of these characters broken down and appreciated! Do you watch gameplay for these reviews or just go off the promotional art in the wiki? Personally I find seeing the movement and animations in game to give a much better sense of the outfit, especially in Strive

You should review BlazBlue characters!! It's also very over-the top and creative with how the outfits fit each character narrative and personality wise
