what I like about this video, apart from the nice water and smooth scullling... is when you are rowing down through the buoyed section as the buoys mark the point where you catch the water and lever through that point. nice feathering too!

Brilliant video. Thank you. I'm relatively new to your Channel (one month, just after I bought my Rower) It's inspiring and this video helped me pace myself and row further than I have done before over a 30 minute period. It's the next best thing to being on the water and fantastic scenery. I look forward to enjoying and learning from your previous videos. You're a great motivator and your enthusiasm is infectious. Great row along. First time through, normal speed,;18 spm. Second time through 1.25 playback speed; 24 spm. Don't know if you intended it that way, but picking a steady stroke rate and holding it that long works just fine for different playback speeds. Cool! Thanks!

@@CameronBuchan Big step! Well done. Much less flexing wrists = good. Now get more clearance off the surface - exaggerate this, feeling like you are trying to run down the shins after passing over the kneecaps. That sets up the run of the boat, and the control in the sculler.

What would be really cool is if you do this in a coxed four or something - same perspective with the stroke or 3 holding the camera, but getting cox banter to ""keep it together / keep it strong / strong body, head up, controlled up the drive, ... " to kind of get a good workout with someone shouting at you.

lovely. Stroke frequency is a thing though. youtube’s speed settings should be more fine grained.

But then the video wouldn't be 30 minutes! I am of the opinion that there is no need to rate above 24 for long steady work. Hence the steady 19/20 strokes per min in this video

Stunning stretch of water there at Strathclyde - I’m guessing it’s not always that calm and still! I can only dream of getting that distance per stroke - any advice to a Masters E rower (late to the sport), in trying to hold a long finish yet still tap out cleanly rather than rolling it out in a 4x - I have tried taking the power off a fraction right on the finish plus keeping the hands and elbows drawing up level with the blades? 😎
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 2 года назад
Definitely not like that all the time but makes the times when it is even more special. I'm just starting to feel like I'm getting that sort of right myself. To me when I feel it is right is when I get the pressure release, like you mentioned, not quite easing off but not full power. The biggest part I feel is my finish position. When I am able to time my hips anc arms moving to the back end so when my blades pop out I feel like I'm really at the finish. Rather than sometimes can feel a little bit like I'm cutting it short. Hopefully that makes some sense!!
@Nomads_Rowing
@Nomads_Rowing 2 года назад
I’m aiming to get rid of that ‘rush’ on the finish and go a little more ‘chilled’ - after all, it’s the start of the recovery 😎

Hey I joined rowing in September and I’ve progressed very quickly but one thing I struggle with is my steering in the single, I don’t realise it but according to my coaches I must put one blade in the water a split second before the other which leads me to facing one direction or another. Any tips for working on the timing? I also grip my blade handle very hard, any tips again on how to relax a bit more in a single?😊
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 5 месяцев назад
Great work on getting on the water! The more you can get out there the more relaxed you’ll be able to feel and the more used to feeling the timing you’ll get!

OK so finally started sculling on the Thames ( learning in a quad at the moment ) and I notice the singles ( and yourself in this vid ) often "pause" at the finish ( which never happens in sweep oar of course ) and wonder is this common to help balance the boat or just used during steady state work such as this ? Thanks.
@dermotbalaam5358
@dermotbalaam5358 2 года назад
Many also pause at the finish in sweep too at lower rates. It’s almost fashionable.
@Josh_Roberts
@Josh_Roberts 2 года назад
Pausing at the finish lets you boat run through the water. If you were to throw you arms forwards and rush to the catch all you achieve is rubbing off boat speed
@BobbieGWhiz
@BobbieGWhiz Год назад
These three rows averaged about 9:15 seconds. If these are 2k runs, then according to rowinglevel website, those would be the pace of a beginning male age 60-65. Do you think these runs were actually 2k, or more, or less? I’m a beginning older male rower and find these fairly challenging. So either I’m in pretty bad shape, or the numbers are off. I’m doing a run 3 times daily. Thanks much.
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan Год назад
I haven't used that website before, I assume it relates to erging only vs water speeds. They are vastly different, water speeds heavily dependent on conditions. Wind, water temp and then of course the actual effort of the pieces themselves. 9:15 is around 2:19 splits. Not super fast but a good pace for a chilled out row on some glass water! For reference, the same effort on an erg we are looking st around 1:55-1:50 split, for me.

Cam what is the best workout to do in order to improve aerobic ability on 5k ergs. ls it to do more 5ks or to do longer ut2s? Ps I asked u this a couple of EPs ago but made a typo so u misunderstood

Depends on quite a lot of factors. Training age, current aerobic levels, current training and a few others. Both will help but either might be more helpful depending on you as an athlete.
