Did you take part in our 30 in 30 challenge? Let us know how it went! 👇

I had already decided to ride every day in 2023 beforehand, so 30 in 30 seemed like a non issue. I think my shortest day was about 45min, but usually grabbed an hour or so. If you're getting set up for 30min, you might as well do a full workout

I did take part or I'm still taking part. During the winter I practice hot yoga instead of biking, right now it's the 28th of January and I've practice yoga 34 times with 3 days left, so I should be up to 36 classes by the end of the month. I also added walking, I walk between 3.5 to 4 miles everyday except for cold rainy day only missed 3 days so far this month.

In the winters I have standing Zwift sessions with guys I know who live all over the United States. This keeps people not only wanting to get fit in the months where riding outside is difficult or impossible but using various voice chat solutions we can talk with each other too to stay connected. I did some of the rides and found that Manon is a speed demon.

#GCN30in30 Have not missed a day yet. Was able to get on a sessions with Conor and Cillian and was excellent. Was nice to chat with them. Unfortunately due to my work schedule I was not able to complete my bucket list and ride with every presenter. Totally awesome challenge and just waiting for that rest day on Jan 31. 😁 Hope these type of rides can continue in the future. Thanks GCN for the motivation!!

I started playing sports in 1968 and have tried to stay active my whole life, but there were gaps due to injury and work overload. Now that I am retired and injury stable I am able to consistently get in 5+ hrs a week training on the bike for the past 12 months. I had suffered through a big injury gap before that. One thing I can pass on to everyone much younger than me is that you will always be the most healthy and happy when you are fit and it is the best way to relieve work stress (much better than a trip to the pub). Stay fit and be happy.

Just thought I'd mention that the audio levels on this video are completely out of whack -- very low voice levels and booming loud music. I find myself turning the volume up and down constantly. Please ask your video editors to normalize the audio levels, and maybe ask your friends at GMBN to do the same 🙏

I'm 72, 175cm, 61.5kg, and have been riding my Peloton 30-45 minutes, 6 days a week (morning/fasted). It's tough trying to keep up with those 20ish/30ish instructors, especially when they want to spin up above 110 rpm. Almost impossible jogging out of the saddle at anything above 60 rpm. But I'm trying, and have noticed gains over the past three months. I've dropped 22.5kg since the end of September 2022. However, there's no way in hell, that I can put out 200+ watts. I'm happy when I can get some short burst at 120-150 watts.

Always helps if your FTP has been 300 in the past. For the average Joe, do zone 2. You'll not be able to recover from such intensity in time to make the next day's training effective doing high intensity.
@galenkehler
@galenkehler Год назад
On the flip side, if you have the discipline to go hard every day, you'll force your body to get better at recovery. Biggest training lesson for me over the last few years is that I was allowing too much recovery. The next day may not be as effective in the short term but in the long term you get much stronger.
@marksIItimewarps
@marksIItimewarps Год назад
Not sure what Zone 2 standard used but in a 3-zone scale, Zone 2 is certainly intense. In a 5-zone scale, Zone 2 would still be low intensity or relatively easy. FTP means little here in my experience. From an average joe at 40 years of age, it took me a month to get used to 30 minutes high intensity effort. So you don't just dive into into intense 30 minute sessions. You ease your way into it, beginning with short 5 minute high intensity sessions and then increasing it week after week.

Inspired by #30in30 I decided to do 30k's for 30 days. Doing a mix of low effort pace partner rides, Tour de Zwift, a few races and alpe du zwift once a week. I didn't know about this, but started - between Christmas and New Year - getting back on the exercise bike. Started off wanting to do 25k a day, but this week passed 55k in one day. That might not sound like much to some, but I slept *very* well afterwards. On the bike as I type this, and I've done it every day, bar one and I added the k's I'd missed on that day across the next three. Should get over 800k for January, and I'm hoping to get closer to 850k. I find watching stuff like this when I'm on the bike myself *very* motivating, and if I had Zwift, I'd definitely have done the community rides! I'm still early (3/4 months into seriously) in getting my fitness back after having spent almost a decade getting more and more out of shape. I didn't manage 30/30 as I went out the gates too eager and accumulated too much fatigue early and needed a rest day but the challenge set me off right for this month. I've managed to get 20/31 days this month hit (450km and 6000m climbing) and it's massively improved my fitness putting close to 40w onto my FTP and my Garmin finally telling me after 3 months of training my VO2 max has finally hit "good" for my age when I started out at "poor". I'm going to try and keep hitting 2/3 days for as long as I can and keep the momentum going into the rest of 2023

10:39 Kudos to Si' for holding a commendable 270 W average power for almost an hour!! The hour record is within reach! Buying the Zwift Hub may have been my best cycling purchase so far. It for sure spurs on the "training stimuli" through the grimmest of winters (turns out I've just been promoted to cat A by the algorithm). My "mixed-effort" training plan includes basic upper-body calisthenics & a weekly 10-km (quite muddy, but more importantly screen-free) trail run. Brutal... yet not as much as Hank's bonkers icy morning dip!!! 😂 P.S. Please record a video with superstar Mark Beaumont riding the much-awaited SCOTLAND Zwift course (final stage of the ongoing Tour de Zwift) and comparing it to his beloved home turf. 🤩

Thank you GCN, thank you for a renaisance in my cycling abilities. First there was Ollie chatting with the Wahoo guy with the whiskers telling us that riding uphill alters the position on the bike not just the difficulty. So now I have 6 inches of extra blocks under the front wheel for half my turbo sessions. Apart from all else it helps cure Manon's "greedy goblin". Then we have Simon and Dr Inigo giving absolutely loads of good gen. Then we have Alex and Ollie with their aero or light weight. Not so much their actual comparison but the ordinary people they were passing so easily made me feal human rather than depressingly inadequate. Then Simon with his old vs new vid gave me a, albeit unattainable, target with his 6 minute climb, while I don't need to feel inadequate. So far I've reduce 27 mins to 22 mins. Then we have 30 in 30. Thats the final and best ingredient. 30 mins is not too harsh and allowing any exercise to count meant that when using the bike is impossible we do not need to fail. Its a perfect balance. I managed 5 on road, 19 turbo and the rest walking. As to the results, I now address slopes on the 34 tooth middle ring that previously were a struggle on the 24 tooth inner ring and I feel very much as I did in the 90s when I had a 4.5 mile each way commute every day and climb significantly better. We talk of marginal gains but that applies just as much to learning how to ride better. Thanks again GCN and keep the good vids comming. Now lets see if we can manage 30 in 28.

Great video team! So I do more than 30 minutes (using your 60 minute training videos). I'm 69 years old, so I can't always keep the pace you're doing, but I try. I typically ride with my cycling club on Saturday (40 miles) and Sunday (25 to 35 miles). I have found that if I do 3, 60 minute indoor training rides during the week, my mates have trouble keeping up with me on the group rides. RE the diminishing return on shorter HIIT sessions, I think it's true that you will plateau fairly quickly if that's all you do. I try to keep increasing intensity by increasing my average power for a HIIT session and average speed. Nonetheless, for an average club rider like me, the shorter (60 minute) HIIT sessions work great and I definitely feel the training affect. I see it in my heart rate on group rides, I have to push harder to get into the orange zone.

After nearly 4 weeks of this I find I'm recovering just a bit better. Those 30-minute recovery rides are just enough to trigger a solid, deep night's sleep. Think I'll keep this up the entire year, if I can.

I've loved doing the challenge and upped my FTP by 30 watts. Would have liked some GCN rides earlier in the morning, though, as I wasn't free in the afternoon to ride.

As a cyclist, I been cycling outdoors all the time, I didn't feel fancy of turbo trainer o rollers for indoors. As new year goals, I put myself to do every day 30 minutes HIT on the turbotrainer. Starting day 26 December, in 3 weeks time, I needed start alternating the weeks with 30 minutes and 1 hour days on the roller, mostly because 30 minutes of HIT in not plenty for feel any improvements on me actually. After the icing cold weather is gone, I will hit the road again and enjoy my weekly 17 hours on the road. 👀😁

I hit 30 hours of exercise for the month so far today. A mix of fast 40 minute walks, 30 min stints on the exercise bike (no zwift for me alas, but I have hit the max resistance at last this month!) and 15 minute weight sessions. As for February… same again I guess, don’t want to loose the gains.

That is exellent, I missed out on 7 or 8 days last year and got the message from zwift that I was in the top 200 most active users :-) Most days doing 60-90 minutes though. Remember the rest of the day is rest so no problem to do this every day when the body is used to it.

If you have not been exercising for a while, it would be better to just do 10 minutes daily, not even cycling, no expenses, not much prep and very low mental barrier - if you do that for 2-4 weeks, you’ll start naturally moving to longer exercises.

Great video. Me personally? Nah. Too much work but I do appreciate understanding the science of training to getting fitter that GCN teaches the cycling community. What more average cyclists can do is bake in some of the constructs you teach...like benefits of Zone 2 riding to build the base and H.I.T. to build a bit more power on top of the cake. But ride to the max like Simon and Hank? I can keep up on my ebike and stay in Zone 2.😉

I’m training for a couple marathons as well as a half and full Ironman scattered throughout the year so working on my base for running, biking and swimming with some weight sessions and I’m trying to add some yoga this year. I really missed my yoga last year. Too little time but loving it.
